Need User Data Backup And Restore
Apr 25, 2010
I am working with a PC that has account and password issues so the user is blocked from accessing his files. I have tried Orphcrack on the system but it's not showing any passwords. The user tells me the system has been acting odd for some time now and - of course - he does not have a backup and to make it worse his tax information is on the system so he had to file an extension to get time for me to do this recovery and restore. I need to pull his files from the system to wipe, perform a clean install, setup his account and restore his files.

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.
I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.
I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

Laptop connected wireless to a router. Desktop connected to same router with Ethernet cable. Seagate external HDD, connected to the desktop with a USB 2 connection. I'm trying to use Vista Backup & Restore to backup the laptop to the external HDD. When I try to set it up, the program finds the disk alright. But then it asks for a user & password. What user & password? I tried with all the PW's and users I have on the two computers, but nothing works.

I recently bought an external, portable hard-drive to use partly for backup, partly for mobility. It connects to the usb and I can copy files & folders back & forth, no problem. Some of the files contain confidential data. If the drive was lost or stolen it might be embarrasing. What are the best ways of protecting the data on an external drive?

I have been successfully backing-up to my Freecom hard drive classic 3.5 500GB via Windows Live however the drive keeps on filling up rather than overwriting/updating the current data, which is what I'd assumed was supposed to happen. Is this how it goes or have I missed something? The only option I have is to delete the current data and start again every month which is a bit of a pain!

I have purchased a new desktop (a 64 bit Dell XPS 430)that will come with a Vista Home Premium. The desktop will have one user.
I plan to partition its HD using a tool like pmagic. Partition C will have the OS. The new partition D will be for user data.
I would like to move the /user folder that contains users files (e.g., documents, audio, video, downloads, etc) to the new partition D. (This is how I maintained my many XP systems: alluser data, except settings, were on partition D).
What is the most optimal approach? I have read Microsoft article73760 entitled "Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide."

I accessed Windows via the command prompt, but how can I go to the 'Documents' & 'Downloads' folders? How can I copy the contents to my SD card which is read in the drive letter 'H'. The cmd. 'xcopy' will copy a whole directory & 'copy' will copy individual files. I read that System Restore doesn't affect personal data, but what I read mentioned only the Documents folder. It also mentioned something like the data had to be protected, so I'm wondering if only data in the Documents folder won't be affected!

It all started with failed updates. Then I discovered that I couldn't run the check disk utility. A friend finally gave me a solution sfc /scannow in DOS which told me I had some corrupted files that windows couldn't fix. It told me to check out the log - but I couldn't find it. Now I discover (Having read a thread in VistaForums about the update error code 80070652) that I no longer have tabs in my Task Manager. aaaoorrrgh! I going nuts. how to restore these functions without losing all my data and updated drivers etc. (I'm not a beginner but I'm a sort of low level intermediate)

I want to build a PC. I've browsed around the 'net looking for information on Complete PC Backup. The only thing that I've found on the 'net explains how to do a backup & restore. I've browsed around the Microsoft Vista discussion groups & found out that it is possible to do incremental (I wish that it would do differential instead of incremental backups.) as well as full backups.
Can I give the backup files names or does Windows? For example, before I install certain software can I give the backup a file name such as "before installijng XYZ software"? The way I understand it with incremental backups, the full backup has to be restored first & then the incremental backups are restored next starting with the oldest & proceeding to the latest. Since the Complete PC Backup does incremental backups, does the Restore wizard restore the incremental backups in order?

I have been placing my backup on an external USB 500GB drive. My computer with Windows Vista Ultimate melted down. I have been attempting to restore my documents from the USB Drive. I have restored some folders and now have 89,378 files mostly unrecognizable, such as: 7D6a3B81-0000DD52.nws. Isn't there a reasonable way to see the folders in the back up files so that one knows what to restore?

I just recently got a new motherboard processor etc, and so i had to reinstall vista, well, i decided to go ahead and up to x64 so i backed up my hard drive under my current ultimate32bit and then formatted and installed ultimate64. So i thought i'd do a restore of my drive's backup, so i popped in my install disc, clicked repair comp, clicked restore a backup, chose the backup i wanted, confirmed, then a box popped that said basically, "The windows restore has failed. This backup can be restored on this computer. Please use the correct Windows Recovery Envirnment (x64) WinRE."

I just used Microsoft Backup for the first time. I have an external USB hard drive G: with 70GB free pace and 10GB already used. This was the first time I have run Backup START > CONTROL PANEL > BACKUP AND RESTORE I selected the option to backup everything. It ran for almost 80 minutes. I thought it was running because all the while, it was displaying the file that it was currently processing and then periodically, it would show the message writing to (G When it was finished, it wrote the following three lines
Last backup: 12/15/2009 9:49 PM
Next backup: 12/20/2009 11:00 PM
Where to save files: Local Disk (G So when I looked at G:, I could not find anything new. When I checked properties for G:, it was still 10GB used and 70GB free. Properties for (C were 30GB used 75GB free before and after backup. How can I tell if backup really happened? Did backup leave a log file?

I have a strange problem trying to account for the space usage on my disk. The disk capacity is 186 GB, and there is about 12.5 GB of available space. However, when I look at file sizes using ShowSize, TreeSize, or just manually looking at folder sizes in the explorer, I can only account for 99 GB of space. I have backup/restore turned off. Where's the rest of the disk space?

I recently downloaded a cleanup program that had good reviews from download.com. After using it, I saw that most of my programs in Accessories folder have disappeared!! For example, the System Tools folder is there but Cleanup and Defragmentar are not there, similarly, I have lost Calculator and many other programs. Besides, I somehow cannot use the backup restore that came with the cleanup program. I have uninstalled the cleanup program but how to get my accessories programs back? I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Running Vista Home 64 going to upgrade to 7 professional. I understand that I will have to reinstall everything. My question is if I am using the vista backup and restore once I have completed the 7 install will I be able to restore my files with 7 even though it was originally backup up with vista or do I need to manually copy all my files onto an external drive instead of relying on the vista backup?

I'm operating Vista Ultimate x64 on an HP Tx2 Touchsmart. (The 3rd one.)I've had the Touchsmart for a month and the case broke - so before I swapped it out at Best Buy I went over to the Backup and Recovery area of Vista and made a full restore on to an external hard drive. The folder "WindowsImageBackup" now exists on my G: external drive. I go swap out the two machines, come home and try and get Backup Status and Configuration to recognize the G: drive backup - it finds the drive, not the backup. I get to the point where it searches for a backup to restore - but it won't see anything there. I can see it, but apparently Windows can't. Besides cuss at HP for making a machine I had to return twice because of hardware issues. It's a sweet little tablet (multi-touch) but I've got some lemons right off the rack. Don't let me down Vista community!

Does the complete pc backup compress the files..like say 20 GB on two 4.7 disks or is it linear like 5 4.7 disks for 20 GB? And I don't know why but if I do a complete backup and then try to boot off the disks and press enter it doesn't recognize the disk and just boots up normally.

I have a HP Pavillion M8150N with a quad core 2.4, (2)320 drives, upgraded to 4gbram (that was a waste) ... and ... its a great machine. I bought it 18 months ago and it fixed every problem I had with my old celeron 1.7 machine. I bought a project pavillion M9040N desktop box with no hard drives. I bought an HP Restore Disc and moved my (1) unused 320 SATA drive from my 8150 to the other machine ... and expected to just restore vista and have a backup machine.
It wasn't quite that easy. After (20) tries, I <powered on>, <hit F10>, entered the setup program and made the HD the first device, made the CD the 3rd device, made the HD the first boot device, and set it to display the parameters as it loaded. I dont know if I said that right.....

I have successfully used my Vista installation DVD to backup and restore Complete PC many times. But yesterday, it suddenly stopped booting and no longer prompts me to "Press any key to boot Vista from the installation CD/DVD". Other computers boot fine from this DVD, so it's not faulty. The only changes to the system configuration since the last successful boot from the DVD (literally the night before):
1. Automatic Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
2. Automatic Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)
3. Changed location of Documents, Videos, Music, Pictures to USB HDD, and then reverted back to defaults.
