Phantom Drives In Computer Window.

Jan 3, 2009

I have a 100gb Seagate portable hard drive, which is split 50/50 between an HFS partition for leopard, and a NTFS partition for windows. When I added the windows partition, it asked me what letter to give it, so to make it memorable, I gave it Z:/. Now, after it has been plugged in a few times, I see in "Computer" that is listed many times, as "Local disk ('Letter')". I removed the drive letter setting completely, thinking that would help, but it didn't change anything, now the real listing just says G instead of Z. but the phantom drives are still there.

the REAL listing for the drive is the Seagate NTFS (G/) one. However all of the other ones work as well and show the contents of the drive. Now, I have another portable hard drive that is 500GB, that is also split half and half the same way, and it never does this. is there any way to force vista to double check it's mounted drives to see if they all really exist?

Phantom CD Drive Letter

Mar 18, 2009

Since installing Vista HP (about 6 months ago), I have had a 'phantom' CD drive (always Drive Letter E).

I have so far tolerated it - but not knowing what the h&ll it is is irritating me!

The FOXCONN Motherboard has an (unused) CD connector, but FOXCONN don't believe that that is the problem.

Computer has:

2 x HDD, SATA connected
2 x CD/DVD, IDE connected
External 80 GB USB Hard Drive.
Internal USB Multi-Card Reader/USB Port

On boot
C: - SATA HDD
D: - SATS HDD
E :- unknown CD Drive ?
F: - IDE CD/DVD
G: - IDE CD/DVD
H: - 80GB USB External Drive
I: - Multi-Card Reader
K: - Multi-Card Reader
L: - Multi-Card Reader
M: - Multi-Card Reader
N: - Multi-Card Reader (USB Flash Drive on USB Port)

Drive E: appears in My Computer/Windows Explorer. Drive E: does NOT APPEAR in Disk Management (so I cannot change its Drive Letter and letter E is NOT AVAILABLE),OR Device Manager (in a way that I can identify)

Computer Not Detecting USB Flash Drives

I recently rebuilt most of my computer and upgraded to windows Vista and
now my computer won't detect my USB flash drives. I know the USB ports
are working because my mouse is USB and it works fine. I've tried
uninstalling the USB drivers and letting them reinstall but that didn't
work at all.

Number Of Installs On Different Drives Of Same Computer

Feb 16, 2009

Just obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.

1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??

2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?

Phantom CD Drive In Windows Explorer

Oct 29, 2009

I had a problem with a phantom K: drive.

It wasn't displayed in device manager or disk manager, although the letter was reserved in disk manager and I couldn't use it.

Thinking this was a problem with a USB device I uninstalled all these devices, unplugged everything and restarted the computer. The devices were all rediscovered, and the K: drive didn't go away.

I had none of the DVD playing/recording software or other software others have reported causing this sort of issue.

I have a EXT2 file system driver, but that wasn't the reason either.

I think I hit the computer with a hammer exactly twice. The K: drive didn't go away.

I deleted all the entries under HKLMSYSTEMMountedDevices and restarted the system. The K: drive was gone. Afterward I had to re-map some USB drives but that was all.

Cd Drives Missing In The "computer" Location

Jun 29, 2008

At our house we have 4 HP Compaq nx6325 laptops, they came with Win xp on them but have the windows vista capable logo on them. We have upgraded two of them with windows vista home basic which has been working fine in most cases. But their seems to be something wrong with the cd drives. Sometimes when the computers are turned on the CD drives are missing in the "computer" location and when this is the case if you put a CD in it will no work. But a quick restart and it will work fine. This is the case with the two vista laptops. The XP ones, one works perfectly and the other will only read some discs (like music CD's).

Secondly my personal vista laptops CD drive used to be fine but i was having a hard drive problem and got a new one installed vista onto it and then i had this problem.
Just to clarify my vista laptop used to work fine the other did not, i got a new hard drive installed vista again and then had the same problem as the other one.

Our computers are fully updated with all the HP vista updates and service pack 1. i have tried manually updating the CD drive drivers but could not find any either in the internet or through device manager.

Explorer Window Showing Different Filenames Than The Command Line Window

Mar 25, 2008

Can anyone explain this: 3219. The screenshot shows the folder view (in Windows Explorer), and a directory listing (in a Command Line window). Why is the Explorer window showing different filenames than the command line window? It's not so much of an issue, as I'm currently completing a scheduled backup of this drive using Nero Burning ROM, and will be formatting it soon.

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

Reboot Computer Through Windows The Computer Shuts Down Correctly

When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

XP Computer Disappears And Reappears Arbitrarily From Computer

I have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.

Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)

Merging Two Drives Into One?

Anyway, how, instead of working with this bizarre set-up, could I "merge" C: and D: into one hard drive (in Windows Explorer's eyes, at least) so that I do not have files arbitrarily split into two?

DVD Drives Go Missing 64 Sp2

Jul 20, 2009

I have been plagued with this problem on my Desktop, wherein the DVD drives go missing at random time intervals.

1> Checked the BIOS, both drives are shown (Tried the NATIVE and LEGACY settings)
2> Checked the cables and power supply ( Have put in a new PATA IDE cable for good measure)
3> Updated to SP2 thinking it would have a fix!
Searched Google and tried these Solutions
4> Uninstalled 3rd party Dvd writing software, which i had installed after discovering this problem. (Never had installed iTunes, roxio or zune software)
5> Checked registry values at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
There were no Upper or lower Filters entries.
6> Tried the Auto Fix at "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060" this doesn't work as it says Computer settings already match.
7> Then tried the auto Fix it.................

Drives Not Showing Up

Aug 29, 2008

i've googled this issue all over, and though i've found many people with the same problem, none of their 'fixes' have worked for me. hopefully you guys can come up with something (without reinstalling vista again!) to make it work. as a note, i'm running Ultimate x64 and all of my hardware specs are more than enough and i'm pretty positive that's not the issue.

suddenly, in the middle of normal usage, my drives were no longer recognized by my computer (optical and virtual drives). they do not show up in "Computer" or disk management. they are recognized by the BIOS. i had DaemonTools installed at the time, it was the latest version; i've read that could be an issue. i have absolutely no idea how to get my drives recognized again - i've got some work i really need to get done and haven't been able to fix this............

Usb Drives Not Working

Nov 30, 2008

I have vista home premium with service pack 1. I bought a new external hard drive with usb. western digital my book. It wouldn't install correct drivers it so I returned it and got a maxtor OneTouch4. Vista can't install the correct drivers for this either. Lists it in the device manager as Unknown device with a excamation by it. If I goto the disk manager i see it as drive 1 with no letter assigned. When clicking to try to change it I get an error that says to refresh or reboot. I did both and no change. The disk manager sees the correct size of disk. but I can't assign a drive letter. In device manger under disks i do have the maxtor drive showing that its installed. But under unknown devicices there is one listed. And it goes away if I unlug the usb to the drive. I take the usb drive to xp and it works as soon as i plug it in. Two different brand store bought externals didn't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the disks and unknown device with no luck. The little icon in the bottom right that says safely remove hardware when i click it shows the maxtor drive connected.
