Drive Letter Shortage: Limitatation Of 26 Letters For Drive Designations

Oct 19, 2009

With the advent of terabyte hard drives, is there a work around for the limitatation of 26 letters for drive designations. I have a new computer with 2 terabyte hard drives, two DVD's, several USB connections, and I am running three different programs from ISO files stored on the hard drive with Daemon Tools, all of which take up drive letters. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, but see no work around for this limitation. I have searched Microsoft KB finding nothing addressing this issue. I am hoping that some one knows of a work around for the problem

Internet Explorer Skips Typing Letters

Mar 25, 2010

I've never done this before... so you will all have to bare with me. But I have noticed that everytime I use Internet Explorer, it skips letters as I'm typing. I have to type slow and really pay attention to get everything I am trying to type. I'm not really sure why this happened. It worked great for a while and then all of a sudden one day it would skip letters as I was typing.

Installing 7 And Drive Letters

Nov 6, 2009

I want to install Windows 7.I have 2 Hard Drives, both are portioned in 2 .

If I install windows 7 by booting into Vista, inserting the Windows 7 DVD and run setup.

This way I can assign drive letters that I will want to use consistently in both Operating Systems

I am a little bit confused after reading about installing Win 7. If I boot from Win 7 DVD it will assign the letter C: to its Boot Volume, no matter what drive I choose.

Then it says to assign D: to the start volume. The other letters will be in sequence.

Does that mean I need to put Win & Boot Volume on the same drive as Vista's Boot Volume?

As of now I have First Drive Portioned in to C: and D:

Second Drive Portioned into E: and F:.

I want to install Win 7 on the second drive in part ion 1 which is E:

When I install from Vista I just have to check E: Drive and the Boot Volume
will be on E: too. Hopefully I will have the choice to boot into Vista or
Win 7?

I would also like to give the Drives Names:
Drive 1 Portion 1 Big Vista - Which is C:
Drive 1 Partition 2 Little Vista - Which is D:

Drive 2 Partition 1 Big Win 7 - Which is E:
Drive 2 Partition 2 Little Win 7 -Which is F:

This way I will know exactly which is which, even if Vista calls Big Vista
C and Little Vista D: Also if Win 7 calls it Big Win 7 H:

I hope I explained myself?

Changing Drive Letters, Disk Management Does Not Appear To Help

Apr 2, 2009

I have the following setup now: C: Vista, D: CD, E: CD RW,F: DVD RW, G: = Backup Vista, H: Backup 2, I: Old Stuff. This is what shows up when I look in Computer. The surprising is that I = don't have a CD, although I do have everything else. I want to remove = the erroneous D: and rename I: to D: -- and Disk Management does not = appear to help.

Can Change Drive Letters In Disk Management

Apr 15, 2009

I have 5 USB devices (2 external drives, 1 flash drive, one CF card reader, and 1 Sony walkman) that when connected score a drive letter. My problem is that the drive letters change depending on the order in which the devices are connected (the first one plugged in gets drive F, then G, etc). This causes a headache for my backup software SyncBackPro, where I have schemes set up for my two external hard drives based on drive letters. I can change the drive letters in Disk Management (Vista Ultimate) but that only sticks while that device is connected. For instance, if I unplug my primary backup drive G and connect my flash drive, the flash drive would then become G. Is there any way of permanently locking a particular device to a particular drive letter?

Drive Letters & Partition Contents Swapped

Jan 3, 2009

after shrinking the D: partition, the drive letters and actual partition sequence on the drive changed - the C: (Vista) partition has switched places with the D: (Recovery) partition in Disk Management (D: is now in front of C I first defragged the D: drive using JKDefrag and used its built in feature to move all the files to the end of that partition, so that after splitting D:, the blank portion would be next to the C: partition (so I could have it merge with C: ) how do I get the partitions back to their normal positions (in Disk Mgmt)? and if I delete the D: partition, will it merges with C: and keep my Vista install harmed?

Network Share Drive Letters Disappearing

May 6, 2008

I haven't found a solution to this yet: I have 2 network driver established. They reconnect during reboots and are accessible fine. For some reason they stopped being visible in explorer until I explicitly go to them by enteing the letter in the address bar. Then one or both with show up (usually just the one I put in) I also have an internet webdav drive that also does not show up until i put it's letter in the address bar. If I use applications to access the letters, they show up ok in that application's file open/save box.

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

This just recently happened so I'm assuming something got clobbered.

I am trying to defrag my hard drive and I started compressing file folders which is saving some space but I am not sure if this should account for the entirety of the problem. I haven't downloaded anything in a while and still I've just watched 5 gb disappear in about a two week period of time. I've been deleting files and I have been clearing out the trash bin but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Games Missing From Game Explorer After Moving Folder

Apr 13, 2008

I am moving a lot of my games out of the Program Files folder into C:Games so that UAC doesn't ask permission to play most of my games anymore. The problem is that, after I move the game folder, even though the game plays perfectly, it disappears from the Game Explorer and I can't seem to get it added back. The specific game i'm trying with is Lord of the Rings Online. (I moved World of Warcraft and it fixed itself instantly). Everquest 1 also disappeared and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it back in the game explorer other than dragging in the exectuable. Is there a way to get the official Game Explorer icon back for Lord of the Rings Online with the full game rating and ESRB rating and all after moving the folder?

CD-ROM Drive Missing

Jan 22, 2009

I have a HP pavillion dv9700 notebook pc. It started about 3-4 days ago. I went to import some songs on a cd onto my iTunes, which is when I found out that my CD-ROM drive was missing, for how long, I do not know. It was just then that I had discovered it (not having put a disc in my computer for a good while). So, I went online to find some fixes to this problem. I tried the "delete 'upperfilter' and 'lowerfilter' " fix. Then rebooted the computer, however, I do not know if this is the trigger to what is yet to come. So the computer rebooted, and I then was able to find my CD/DVD-RW drive.

I uploaded my music. Later on, out of nowhere, I tried to turn my computer on, a day later maybe. This is what happened, it starts up really slow, then gets to the blank screen before startup and just sits for ever. Then I get a message saying "Operating System not found". I know what this means, I think, but I have no clue why I am getting it, what did i do wrong to cause it. Anyhow. This only occured a time or two, in which case I would shut the computer off, turn it back on, and it would bootup properly. I would say that it would mess up 3 times out of 10. So I DID save all the items i wanted to keep onto a jump drive, just incase......

Missing DVD Drive.

Oct 16, 2009

I recently purchased a sanyo vaio laptop (model number NW 11SS) for myself and two e-machine latops (one for my husband and one for my parents) All was going well, all software was installed, Norton 360 installed was installed on all three laptops with no problems. However, a few weeks later I tried to install the Office student and home edition on all three laptops and found out that the dvd drive icon in the my computer window on all three laptops has been deleted and the discs wont be recognised. I searched on google for 'missing d drive' and found that it was a very common problem and one that microsoft are wel laware of. I found the microsoft repair which I followed to the letter on one laptop but it doesnt work! (Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs)

I've read that this error is caused by conflicting updates, but are they Norton updates or windows vista updates causing the problems? Should turn off updates completely, but if I do this, I will miss out on the updates that I need? I have now had to book for an IT engineer to come and try and sort out the problem at my own expense (£35 per hour with 3 laptops to sort out = a lot of money!) when this should be something that microsoft should be doing...isnt it?

DVD Drive Not Working/missing

i had not used my dvd drive in a while (oh yea it's a hp dv6824) and the other day i tried to open it and it would open so i used a paper clip and opened closed it back . No response so i restarted the machine , my drive no longer appears in my computer or device manager, so after a few days of doing just about everything i could think of including restoring to factory state, nothing worked the drive would function while the machine booted but as it loaded vista it stoped functioning instantly.

i did the registry fix for the upper and lower fix (itunes issues) nothing still After getting throughly frustrated i removed the drive put it back and still nothing so i did a bios flash back to an older bios and magically it started working again then i went to sleep and so did the machine upon the machine resume it all disappeared again i tried the bios flash once more to no avail

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
