Windows Explorer (File Manager) Folder Formatting?

Apr 15, 2010

Is there any way to format folder file display for a group of folders (or subfolders) in file manager? I need to be able to do this to display my contacts properly, for example. It looks like you can either format file inforamation display for all the folders or an individual folder (one-at-a-time), but not a group of folders. If this is true, why?

Formatting A Dvd

Feb 6, 2009

I now have figured out how to format a DVD-R Disk, I only have to insert the DVD and the Autoplay box comes up and I pick burn files to disk using Windows and click on Show formatting options and select Mastered Formatting option. do the same with a DVD-R Disk, I insert the DVD-R Disk and nothing happens, the Autoplay box does not come up so I can't select the format option, I go into My Computer and click on the E: DVD DRIVE and if I go and click on format it only gives me one option to fast format the DVD disk but then it will format it (Live File Format) and I want Mastered Format, How do I format the DVD +R Disk as Mastered? Sorry for all the stupid questions but I am new to using DVD'S and am
struggling to figure this out.

Formatting The Hardrive

I was reading how to format my HP computer and it says "Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord." Do I really need to disconnect anything I recently put into my computer to upgrade it. This step they call for seems useless?

HDD Disappears During Formatting

I installed a new, second HDD. I initialized it and began formatting it on Disk Management. When I just came back after being away from the computer for a few minutes, I noticed that the whole HDD, not to mention its formatting process, had completely disappeared from Disk Management! The HDD is still physically connected, it wasn't taken away by a fairy. What caused this and how to prevent it from happening?

Recovery Partition And Formatting?

Apr 23, 2010

I have a160GB external HD with three partitions. I took it out of a laptop (I was using it to run Windows on that laptop), formatted the 'main' partition (approx. 145GB), and installed Linux on it. The machine I was running Linux in is 'dead' now, so I want to format this 'main' partition again (in Windows), so I can use it for storage or whatever. The problem is that when I plug it into my machine running Vista, it 'sees' the 'recovery' partition (still there from when I was using it in the original laptop), but it doesn't 'see' that 'main' partition (the one I had Linux on). I went into Disk Management, and I can see all three partitions, but when I try to access that 'main' partition,it won't let me do anything with it. Right-clicking the partition brings up my options, but they're all grayed out. I realize that I can't open the partition in Windows, since it has Linux on it, but why can't I format it in Disk Management? I have no way to get into the Linux OS to try to uninstall or format it that way, since the machine is 'dead'.

How can I go ahead and format this partition?

Formatting HD And Reinstalling Win Vista

Before I start formatting the drive (and lose all my other programs and settings) and attempt to reinstall Vista, I was wondering whether there was some easy way to wipe all traces of the trial program? I am no great tech expert, so protracted brain surgery with registry settings may not be an option for me!

Cell Formatting Does Not Work

Jun 11, 2008

I'm finding that cell formatting (eg, dates) will no longer work in Excel 2000. Whether it is an existing spreadsheet or a new one, cell formatting does not work, and all dates entered are treated as text. This applies whether the cell formatting is done before or after the date is entered. It does appear to be a Vista/Excel 2000 conflict of some sort as it did not happen until after I got Vista. And I've just opened (from a Windows XP computer on the same network) some of the offending files, and the problem does not exist.

Formatting External HDD With NTFS, Comes Up As RAW

Apr 12, 2008

I have an internal IDE HDD that I have put in an USB external enclosure and connected to my Dell Vista laptop. When I attempt to format the drive in Computer Management, I assign it a letter and format with NTFS. However, the result is a Healthy Partition in RAW format. When I try to attempt to reformat using quick format, sometimes it will format it again as RAW, or it will give me an error message stating that Windows cannot format the drive. Again, the HDD shows up as a Simple, Basic, Healthy(Primary Partition) with a RAW File System. I cannot access the drive and put files on it.

Ultimate: Formatting HD Nothing With Vista

Mar 19, 2009

how do you format HD in Vista. I searched in HELP section. these are entries in results:

How often do I need to be concerned with formatting disks?
What do I need to do to format a hard disk?
What file system should I use?
What's a quick format?
What are partitions and volumes?
How do I create more partitions?
How do I add a new hard disk?

under 2nd entry it says something like you need to create partitions first, then format each partition, this is RETARDED.. (ah yes, nothing with Vista is simple.. as soon as I have money I will purchase Windows XP, and ditch Vista for good...) in any other OS you right-click on drive you want to format and then hit "format"

Formatting A Hard Drive

Mar 27, 2008

I'm using Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire laptop, and recently I lost access to half my hard drive. I rang my manufacturers support line, and they told me how to create a new vloume using disk management. However, when i double click it, it says it needs to be formatted. After waiting a long time (twice!) for the volume to format, it reaches 100% completion and then an error message apears saying 'Windows cannot complete the format'. This happens when i try Quick Format too. Upon clicking OK, i get a further message saying 'Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, and make sure the disk is not read only'. The disk is certainly not read only, I can see the drive in MyComputer etc. but cannot open or explore it. In Properties, it says the volume is 0 bytes big! And it should be 50GB.

System Restoring And Formatting

Oct 18, 2009

I was wondering, since a system restore is basically restoring your system to a state it was at before, does it have anything to do with files you have deleted/moved etc. (will a system restore undo file deletions?), or does it have only to do with things like the registry? (restoring key entries in the registry) What does it have to do with and not to do with? Secondly let's say you purchased a dell, it's going to be at factory condition, meaning it has windows and a bunch of other stuff on it. You install a fresh copy of windows via a windows cd, thereby deleting every driver and utility on there and have only a seemingly useless thing.

1. Will a system restore bring your computer back to factory condition? (the way it was when you bought it)
2. I also guess you can do a system restore if and only if you have a system restore point. How do you make one and how can you tell you've made one before? (in other words how can you tell you made one at a certain point and how it is like? Or, if someone else made one for you, how can you check this and what the restore point is like?)

Re-formatting The HDD, Reclaim Disk Space?

Feb 11, 2009

I've got a 3-yr old Dell laptop that I recently upgraded to Vista Business from WinXP Pro with SP3. It's a spare for the staff and it has been checked out. The staff member came back to say the HDD was almost full, I checked and saw that only 7 GB of the 80 GB total was free. So I uninstalled a bunch of programs and windows components she didn't need or want, ran Disk Cleanup, Defrag .... I was only able to reclaim 3 GB. Downloaded a trusty defrag program I use - JK Defrag - and ran it. Only gained another GB. Rebooted a couple times and re-ran JK Defrag. No gain. Checked the folder sizes and saw that the WINSXS folder was huge. Checked it via Google and saw that I can't really get rid of it.

Short of re-formatting the HDD and starting over, what else can I do to reclaim disk space? I'm guessing that Defrag and JK Defrag aren't doing so well becuase they have less than 10 GB of "wiggle room" to work with.

Installing 32 Bit From 64 Bit Windows Old Folder

Jun 16, 2009

I recently installed the vista Ultimate 32 bit after using the 64 bit for several years . The reason behind that was i missed using some software and my Epson Scanner. I have reinstalled the 64 bit twice. First time i deleted the Program Files Windows old without an issue , Second time i could not delete it. When i installed the vista 32 bit , there it was again but i let the updates finish , defraged The drive and found that the windows old created a Program Files X 86 folder and there was all my old 64 bit software and drivers. I could delete all but the common files , windows Collaboration, Windows Media Player.

My Question : Is / Was this Normal ? I don't think so. How do I Delete This? windows old Folder in C drive ? and the Program Files X 86 folder? Should I start over? There was never an option for the windows old Folder. It was bought and paid for. I have also posted this day about two other issues in the Media Center. It can not get the right TV Guide listings and the other was my Display will not turn off when the PC is off. The monitor just displays the "no signal" message.

choose "drive options" then format the partition you intend to install the OS to and that will do away with the Windows.old folder. since i now have the 32 bit version installed, and i reinstall the 32 bit again, I'm guessing the windows old 64 bit program files will not be there except what I cant or have not yet deleted will no longer be there. Considering That I have another question now. If I do manage to create a Partition in Drive C How can i use that second Partition to store all of the restore points or other related files? I have a second Drive 1 TB. in the past windows used it automatically to store backup files. Especially for the complete PC backup ...
