Open Office Compatibility?, Retaining Formatting
May 26, 2008
Vista Business plus Office 2007 sometimes causes problems - particularly with Search/Replace - that MS cannot resolve. A friend uses Open Office on his XP machine for certain functions that create difficulties with MSOffice. Documents apparently move back and forth easily, retaining formatting. Have readers here had success with Open Office on Vista?

I'm considering upgrading my processor to 64 bit when Windows 7 comes out and would like to know if my current 32 bit version of Office 2007 can be upgraded without cost to 64bit. Cost is a big factor in my considering an upgrade.

I have a problem with Vista not retaining a custom color profile for the monitor, as has been doccumented by other users here and elsewhere. It loads on startup, and is dumped immediately. If I manually reload it, any interruption by the security settings or closing the lid of the laptop dumps the profile. I've seen lots of posts about this, but no solutions. Can anyone tell me if there's a solution? or will SP1 resolve this? Vista Home premium on a Sony Vaio laptop. Video card is Intel Mobile Express965. Sony have washed their hands of the problem and say it's a Microsoft

What is the simplest way to have Open Office open any type of Microsoft Office file?
My Office trial is over and I'm too cheap to pay for it.
I tried using the Default selector, but I was wondering if there was a method quicker than going through each extension one by one.
I use Home premium x64.

Mac and Linux and is free. It handles graphics in multipage documents better than MS Office. It can read and write many formats including its own Open format as well as all version of MS Office except the newest. Few business users save in that new Office format because it is NOT compatible with other versions of MS Office. You can download and try is for free and it does NOT have any of that stupid copy protection. And it is more secure. And you never have to pay for all future upgrades.

Originally, I had Office 2003 installed in my computer, & a trial version of 2007 that had already expired.
Today I installed a full version of Microsoft Office 2007, without removing any of the other two versions from my computer. I realized that it seemed to automatically remove the older version. I`m not bother about it not being there, as I got the new version, but I wonder if this is an automatic uninstalling that Office does, or if the version is still there but I can`t see it, as I would like to remove it properly if it`s still somewhere in my computer.
I checked in Control Panel & the only thing I can see is "Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007", the full version I just installed, & everything that come with it. No 2003 anywhere.

I now have figured out how to format a DVD-R Disk, I only have to insert the DVD and the Autoplay box comes up and I pick burn files to disk using Windows and click on Show formatting options and select Mastered Formatting option. do the same with a DVD-R Disk, I insert the DVD-R Disk and nothing happens, the Autoplay box does not come up so I can't select the format option, I go into My Computer and click on the E: DVD DRIVE and if I go and click on format it only gives me one option to fast format the DVD disk but then it will format it (Live File Format) and I want Mastered Format, How do I format the DVD +R Disk as Mastered? Sorry for all the stupid questions but I am new to using DVD'S and am
struggling to figure this out.

I was reading how to format my HP computer and it says "Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord." Do I really need to disconnect anything I recently put into my computer to upgrade it. This step they call for seems useless?

I installed a new, second HDD. I initialized it and began formatting it on Disk Management. When I just came back after being away from the computer for a few minutes, I noticed that the whole HDD, not to mention its formatting process, had completely disappeared from Disk Management! The HDD is still physically connected, it wasn't taken away by a fairy. What caused this and how to prevent it from happening?

I've been using MS Windows since it's initial release years ago. Hard as it
may be to believe, there was a time when anything that ran on an earlier
version of Windows was guaranteed to run on the latest version. It's gotten
progressively worse over the years and now we have Vista, where anything
that ran on an earlier version is virtually guaranteed to go haywire.
If there's been some sort of improvement here, I fail to see it.

I have a160GB external HD with three partitions. I took it out of a laptop (I was using it to run Windows on that laptop), formatted the 'main' partition (approx. 145GB), and installed Linux on it. The machine I was running Linux in is 'dead' now, so I want to format this 'main' partition again (in Windows), so I can use it for storage or whatever. The problem is that when I plug it into my machine running Vista, it 'sees' the 'recovery' partition (still there from when I was using it in the original laptop), but it doesn't 'see' that 'main' partition (the one I had Linux on). I went into Disk Management, and I can see all three partitions, but when I try to access that 'main' partition,it won't let me do anything with it. Right-clicking the partition brings up my options, but they're all grayed out. I realize that I can't open the partition in Windows, since it has Linux on it, but why can't I format it in Disk Management? I have no way to get into the Linux OS to try to uninstall or format it that way, since the machine is 'dead'.
How can I go ahead and format this partition?

I have a Vista Premium PC where I installed a trial version of a program, let it expire and now I bought the full version but cannot seem to get it to install since the ghost of the old trial version seems to be haunting my PC. Before I start formatting the drive (and lose all my other programs and settings) and attempt to reinstall Vista, I was wondering whether there was some easy way to wipe all traces of the trial program? I am no great tech expert, so protracted brain surgery with registry settings may not be an option for me!
