Ultimate: Formatting HD Nothing With Vista

Mar 19, 2009

how do you format HD in Vista. I searched in HELP section. these are entries in results:

How often do I need to be concerned with formatting disks?
What do I need to do to format a hard disk?
What file system should I use?
What's a quick format?
What are partitions and volumes?
How do I create more partitions?
How do I add a new hard disk?

under 2nd entry it says something like you need to create partitions first, then format each partition, this is RETARDED.. (ah yes, nothing with Vista is simple.. as soon as I have money I will purchase Windows XP, and ditch Vista for good...) in any other OS you right-click on drive you want to format and then hit "format"

Installing Ultimate 64bit With Ultimate Upgrade Key

Jul 7, 2008

I want to reformat my computer and install Vista Ultimate 64-bit as my operating system. I'd rather not spend a couple hundred dollars to do this when I already own Vista Ultimate 32-bit. My computer came with Home Premium and I purchased a Vista Ultimate Upgrade CD (32 bit). Now what I want to know is if I buy the $30 non liscensed Vista Ultimate (64 bit) CD, can I use my Ultimate (32 bit) Activation key to activate it? This would save me around $150. I talked to the Microsoft guys via chat but we just kept going around and around and they never really answered whether or not the Ultimate 64 bit would accept my Ultimate 32 bit upgrade key.

Installing Second Copy Of Ultimate X64 Hangs

Mar 22, 2010

I have a multi-boot computer with Vista Ultimate x64 installed. I have an upgrade for Windows 7 Ultimate but I want to keep my Vista Ultimate x64 bootup. So I try to install a second copy of Windows Ultimate x64 so I can use that to install the Windows 7 upgrade.

When I attempt to install the second copy of Vista Ultimate x64, by booting from the Vista x64 boot CD and directing it to install itself in a separate area on my first hard drive, it starts up, says it is loading the drivers, goes to 100% on the progress bar, and just hangs there without going on. Is there any solution so that I can keep my Windows Vista x64 and still install the Windows 7 upgrade in another partition ?

Ultimate Will Not Boot Up After Installing Updates

Nov 23, 2009

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on several machines without incident. Yesterday I installed it onto my desktop. A Gateway that was previously running Win XP I had backed up my hard drive to an external becuase I wanted to do a clean setup. I chose those uptions as they appeared in the setup screen. The os set up fine. I then ran Windows Update. AFter everything downloaded I let the system install the 87 updates. The computer shyt down. I restaeted it and re-ran updates again. After downloading it installed about 7 more updates and shut down. Now when I turn on the machine. I get the "Splash Screen" tehn a black screen and in the top left corner it says: Booting "Windows Vista".....

That hangs for about two minutes then I get a screen that says Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration. Then a screen that says: The file ARFSPK0N could not be found Press any key to continue. I press a key and I get a Setup Failed and it just basically goes back to the beginning. I have tried installing the Original XP setup disc that came with my computer however it reads it then I get a message saying that Drive "R" could not be read and then my CD drive door opens. There is no disc in that drive as the setup disk is a DVD so it is in the DVD drive. I went into the whole setup screen and chnaged the boot order but nothing seems to work.

Installing Ultimate Over Premium Stopped Compatiability

Mar 23, 2008

finally after way to much research, I bought my HP Pavillion Elite m1950f, which comes with Vista Home Premium loaded. About 3-4 months ago, I bought Ultimate Upgrade version and its been sitting idle. So, I try to upgrade today and 3/4 of the way through it says, stopped compatiability problem, restarts, rollbacks, back to square one! I run the MS compat as suggested and it finds a device issue with a driver. So I uninstall the driver, rerun the compat and NO problems, says all GREEN! Attempt 2 time to upgrade, 3/4 through, bingo same problem. Restart, rollback, comp test again, NO problems All Green! The 3rd try same thing. So here I come to the Guru's for your knowledge and wisdom! What am I missing here? Upgrade from Prem to Ultimate I would think would be a walk in the park! When I upgraded my older system from XP to Ultimate, went though first time, not even a hiccup. So can someone show me the light at the end of the tunnel.................

Recovery Partition And Formatting?

Apr 23, 2010

I have a160GB external HD with three partitions. I took it out of a laptop (I was using it to run Windows on that laptop), formatted the 'main' partition (approx. 145GB), and installed Linux on it. The machine I was running Linux in is 'dead' now, so I want to format this 'main' partition again (in Windows), so I can use it for storage or whatever. The problem is that when I plug it into my machine running Vista, it 'sees' the 'recovery' partition (still there from when I was using it in the original laptop), but it doesn't 'see' that 'main' partition (the one I had Linux on). I went into Disk Management, and I can see all three partitions, but when I try to access that 'main' partition,it won't let me do anything with it. Right-clicking the partition brings up my options, but they're all grayed out. I realize that I can't open the partition in Windows, since it has Linux on it, but why can't I format it in Disk Management? I have no way to get into the Linux OS to try to uninstall or format it that way, since the machine is 'dead'.

How can I go ahead and format this partition?

Cell Formatting Does Not Work

Jun 11, 2008

I'm finding that cell formatting (eg, dates) will no longer work in Excel 2000. Whether it is an existing spreadsheet or a new one, cell formatting does not work, and all dates entered are treated as text. This applies whether the cell formatting is done before or after the date is entered. It does appear to be a Vista/Excel 2000 conflict of some sort as it did not happen until after I got Vista. And I've just opened (from a Windows XP computer on the same network) some of the offending files, and the problem does not exist.

I have an internal IDE HDD that I have put in an USB external enclosure and connected to my Dell Vista laptop. When I attempt to format the drive in Computer Management, I assign it a letter and format with NTFS. However, the result is a Healthy Partition in RAW format. When I try to attempt to reformat using quick format, sometimes it will format it again as RAW, or it will give me an error message stating that Windows cannot format the drive. Again, the HDD shows up as a Simple, Basic, Healthy(Primary Partition) with a RAW File System. I cannot access the drive and put files on it.

Formatting A Hard Drive

Mar 27, 2008

I'm using Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire laptop, and recently I lost access to half my hard drive. I rang my manufacturers support line, and they told me how to create a new vloume using disk management. However, when i double click it, it says it needs to be formatted. After waiting a long time (twice!) for the volume to format, it reaches 100% completion and then an error message apears saying 'Windows cannot complete the format'. This happens when i try Quick Format too. Upon clicking OK, i get a further message saying 'Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, and make sure the disk is not read only'. The disk is certainly not read only, I can see the drive in MyComputer etc. but cannot open or explore it. In Properties, it says the volume is 0 bytes big! And it should be 50GB.

System Restoring And Formatting

Oct 18, 2009

I was wondering, since a system restore is basically restoring your system to a state it was at before, does it have anything to do with files you have deleted/moved etc. (will a system restore undo file deletions?), or does it have only to do with things like the registry? (restoring key entries in the registry) What does it have to do with and not to do with? Secondly let's say you purchased a dell, it's going to be at factory condition, meaning it has windows and a bunch of other stuff on it. You install a fresh copy of windows via a windows cd, thereby deleting every driver and utility on there and have only a seemingly useless thing.

1. Will a system restore bring your computer back to factory condition? (the way it was when you bought it)
2. I also guess you can do a system restore if and only if you have a system restore point. How do you make one and how can you tell you've made one before? (in other words how can you tell you made one at a certain point and how it is like? Or, if someone else made one for you, how can you check this and what the restore point is like?)
