View 5 Replies View RelatedHow can I change the Default Folder for Windows Explorer to my E:/ Drive? Because of the work I do, I do not ever use the Default "My Documents" Folder. It gets a little tiresome to always have to get out of the "My Documents" Folder and find my E:/ Drive. Especially when I am working with all of the different website designs and programming.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI inadvertently said I was using an exchange server and now I am trapped in a never-ending cycle of error messages that will not let me change the server settings to the appropriate pop server. In XP you can go to: Control Panel/Mail/Email Accounts/View or Change Existing accounts, but this option doesn't seem to exist in Vista. Here are the messages I get and the outcomes, I've also attached a couple of screen shots. "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is Unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." At the same time a smaller window is open that says "Configuring Outlook Accounts" The only options presented are to click "X" or "OK" to close the window, once this is done the Microsoft Exchange Window opens with the incorrect server name and account name that I typed in originally. If I try to delete them and click "apply" or "ok" or simply click "X" the following window message appears from Microsoft Outlook:
"Cannot open your default email folders. The file C:/Users/HP/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.ost is not an offline folder file." The options at this point are to click "X" or "Ok" once done the program closes. I have tried uninstalling Office and re-installing, but the Microsoft Exchange Server still remains. I am connected to the internet, all I want to do is change from Exchange Server to pop and supply the necessary pop and smtp information to set-up my email properly. I have been pouring over this for the better part of the day and what's worse is this is for my work email. I am in a remote office, on a laptop, without an IT guy at the moment.
(i'm running vista 32bit SP1, i hope its not too out of place to ask a question in a 64bit forum)
this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
I cannot connect to the PC where I had my Documents folder - so I need to reset the documents folder back to its original location on my PC - but becuase I can no longer access the current location for the Documents folder I can't access that folder in order to change its location - i.e. how can I restore the default location for the Documents folder when I can no longer access that folder?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently messed up real bad. I was playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 for PC. And I went into the documents folder to try to delete the last saved game. When I did I made a mistake and changed the folder with a GCF file in it to open the GCF files with adobe reader. Now I can't figure out what program it originally was suppose to open with. So my question is: How do I change the GCF file folder back to it's default settings so it will open with the program that it's suppose to open with?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a Windows Vista license a short time ago and I have some difficulties with the folder option of remembering each folder settings. I have unset this option but Windows Vista still continues remembering the situation I leave each folder. What I would like is that all the folders were always initialized to a default, even a default for each kind of folder (I just wouldn't like Windows to store individual data for each folder).

You Microsoft wonder why Vist awas a fisaco versus WindowsXP. Here's one example I just wanna spit and close this laptop, walk outside, and quit working. You can't focus on ANYTHING. The annoying persisten behavior is in your face, telling me that MICROSOFT DECIDES HOW MY FILE MANAGER SHOULD LOOK EVEN AFTER I SAVED ITS APEPARANCE AND MAINTAINED FOR A WEEK, IT SUDDENLY DECIDES to goback to default appearance you gret after unpacking thois piece of refuse that Vista is.
I added a new printer to my system and now it seems to be the default. I want another printer to be the default but cannot find a means of changing the it. I know I have seen this somewhere but cannot remember where the setting is.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI may be flamed "for not using the search" on this one, but I did. I didn't scour, as I'm about to go to sleep, but I did notice the mention of Auslogics quite a few times. That's my current defragger, as the default defragger in Vista, I'd say, is pathetic. My question, though, is: Is there anything else? What is the best way to defragment Vista? I don't know if it's a juvenile idea, but in XP, I was always comfortable using the defragmenting tool the OS came with because.. it was for XP, and it worked. You saw the progress. As for Vista's, it shows nothing, there's no visual progress, and every time I use it, it stays on for days on end if I do not end it myself. Auslogics seems to work alright, I see the progress, but I can't verify it's potency and power myself. Plus, I didn't pay. Seems to good to be true. Can someone point me in the right direction, or correct me if need be?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAlthough the built in speakers in my laptop work perfectly - music, dvds, videos, etc. - my vista default sound scheme has stopped working. It was working previously and I am at a loss to understand why it has stopped. I have checked that the speakers are not muted, ensured that the levels are properly set, checked that I have the most up to date driver, etc., etc., etc. None of the sounds work, including the start up, normal alerts and so on. When I go to the sound scheme and test individual sounds they do not play, however, if I open the individual sound files they will sound in media player. I know there is an expert out there somewhere who will know what to do.
View 6 Replies View Relatedhow to set up a "default" folder for certain windows programs? For EXAMPLE--- I have a special personalized "BITMAP image" folder I especially made just for all my screen saver "custom reflections".......just to use for the windows screensaver classic "3-D TEXT" --- (that many people usually use for the digital CLOCK feature) --- which originally showed up for as one of the screen savers for Windows XP.
Anyway....many of you are probably very familiar with this screen saver since its very useful as a clock. Yet I happen to like using my own customized bitmap reflections. In this screen saver's settings you must click on a button called---"Use Custom Reflections" and opens up Windows Explorer. But it would be really NICE if I could make it automatically open right up to that specific image folder! So does anyone here know how to do that?.......

I have enabled the necessary sharing rights for the computers and I can access eachother's "Public" folders without a problem. However, using my laptop, I am trying to access the default "Music" folder located on my desktop computer. When I select the music folder on my desktop and click share, it asks "Choose people to share with"...I then click the down arrow next to the "Add" button to choose the laptop computer name but...I don't see the name of my laptop computer to choose. What am I missing?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi found some software which can sort your videos and rename them properly according to imdb blah blah blah not important, and there's a feature that will sort the files into their own folders. i.e make a new folder named after the file and move the file in to it. but it stopped working, and i've got it into my head that it's to do with permissions. i dont have modify rights of the folder that the videos are stored in and when i try to change it to let me modify it says access denied. but some of the folders inside that folder have modify allowed and others don't. this is on an external drive, but i can sort the files into folders when the files are on my laptop.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.
