Access Another Network Resource With Different Password?
Apr 19, 2008
how can i access another network resource with different credentials/password from the address bar? is there something similar in vista? everytime i try to access a vista shared folder from vista, it asks for a username & pw in a windows prompt box, even though i typed the right username/pw it still locked me out when i made several unsuccessful attempts, it looks like vista has completely locked out that pc from trying to access it. what can i do to unlock out the xp computer from accessing the vista pc?

I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...

I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

Router shares the drive using samba server. Win xp has no problems while accessing this drive. Vista can access the drive only if it is not protected by password. I have an Acer laptop which came with Vista Home Premium installed. I set up a password on the Personal Secure Disk (PSD) and put some of my genealogy data in there. When I come to access the data the system tells me I have used an incorrect password. Now I know I have the correct password - something has gone wrong. Are there any clever hacks developed to get into the PSD by evading the password protection?

Im not really much of a computer wizzkid so pardon me if im not making much sense. I went into tools>account>default mail account>servers tab> My problem started then. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.
Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.

Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

I have a "Lenovo SL500" thinkpad laptop, Running Vista Business 32bit. And a costum built Desktop PC running Vista Ultimate. Both password protected, but with the same password. I would like to transfer files vire the network. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the Reciving computer was not password protected. All I would do is open "Network" located in the start menu and then do the folowing "Network\". To find computers name: open start menu, right click on "computer" and press "properties" But because the reciving computer is password protected I can only see "Printers" I need security so I cannot remove passwords OR open my computer up for file sharing!
The only other options I have got are: Bluetooth: This Ok but is slow and you are needed on both computers for accepting, entering passes etc. (I would preferrer not to!) Server: We have a Server but this means uploading to the server(could take ages), Then Downloading the server(thats double the time). (Again I would preferrer not to!) Memory sticks: Basically a simaller problem to the server! (Once again I would preferrer not to!) So basically what I am asking is: Does anyone know an application/progam that deals with network file sharing (That will do what I am asking for) Or a hidden option in vista to allow this Or something?

I was trying to access my FTP through vista explorer, but couldn't remember my password. I typed in the wrong password a few times and as a result I can no longer access any of my FTP locations. I have turned off Vista's firewall, turned off AVG, checked the router, made a new port 21 rule, and restarted my PC. I simply can't figure out what might have happened and I can't seen to find any solution.

ComputerA, running Windows XP 32-bit has a shared folder in read-only mode called SFiles with a sign-on of CAShare and a password of ZXJK1122. ComputerB, running Windows Vista 64, in the Network entry of Windows Explorer shows ComputerA. When I expand ComputerA I can see the SFiles shared folder undereath and when I try to click on the folder it asks me for a sign-on and password. I answer with CAShare and ZXJK1122, and it asks me if I want to save this information and I say yes. Subsequently, when I click on the SFiles shared folder it gives me read-only access to the files in the shared folder. This works excellently.
Subsequently, on ComputerA, I decide to change the password for the sign-on of CAShare from ZXJK1122 to NPPP345T. Now on ComputerB when I try to click on the SFiles shared folder in Windows Explorer I get a message of: "Windows can not access \ComputerASFiles with an error code of Ox80070005, Acces is denied."
That's fair enough, since I changed the password for the sign-on. So I want Windows Explorer on ComputerB to ask me for a new password, and I will reply NPPP345T and now have read-only access again which is fine. But it does not do this but repeatedly denies me access each time I click on the shared folder. Surely there must be some way to tell Window Explorer to get a new password from me for this share. How do I do that ? It seems impossible that Vista will keep me from accessing shared folders of another computer on my network simply because it has decided that I can not change the signon/password to the other computer's shares.

I am trying to install a printer on machine 2 from machine 1. The printer is shared. Same workgroup The same logon information on both machines, user and password the same. When I log onto machine 1 it won't let me print. It tells me I don't have access or the print spooler is not running.. If I go to network places on machine 1 and click on machine 2 it asks for the user name and password. I enter the same information I entered when I logged onto machine 1 and after this I have connectivity and am able to print.

I prefer to have Essentially the entire "user files" folder shared to my other computers given they supply a network password....
I cannot access the other computers i type \mainpc i get a typical error "is not available share. Contact the admin for access" My attempts: *all have workgroup the same *all run vista business or ultimate *all can access the internet *reset network connections *reset router even tried using a simple switch only without internet *insured networks were set for PRIVATE network *utilized user name and passwords for all accounts on all computers but the guest account *shared folders using advanced share and pick specific user admin accounts to have full access *i can under network see the computer i want to gain access but it won't ask me for a user name and password if i type \mainpc *I've tried under user accounts in control panel "Manage your network passwords" and inputed the user name nad password on the desired network i want to gain access which semi worked but now it doens't ask for a user name and password. *I've disabled all firewalls and virus scanners *pc 1 and 2 can talk freely to pc 3 but pc 1 and 2 cannot talk to each other.*network discovery on *file sharing on*public folder sharing off *password protected sharing on

I have a 1 TB external hard drive connected to my network. I would like to back up my laptop and setup automatic backup on a weekly basis to this drive like I have done with my desktop. However, the damned thing keeps asking me for a username and password that I did NOT set up on the computer that has the hard drive connected directly into it. When I use my Windows username and password for the computer the drive is connected to, it tells me it is invalid. So what, exactly, is the password if that isn't it? I have password protection turned OFF on my network, so it shouldn't even ask me for one.

what I've done so far: My work has 4 public internet access computers. What I have done was set each of these to be a "Public Network", and have enforced the requirement to enter a password on UAC so that the public users cannot make unauthorized changes to the settings. Now, however, it is still possible to access other computers on the network, if you know the name of the computer youwant to access. What I want is this: Is there away in Vista to TOTALLY disable all network access while still maintaining Internet Connectivity? These are the only Vista machines on the network. All other machines are XP.

I am going to upgrade my vista home premium notebook to vista business, but since my company is providing both business and ultimate upgrades at no cost to me, I am wondering why not upgrade to vista ultimate, since I love what I have with home premium anyway. But if ultimate contains everything that other versions of vista has, it probably means more services running in background, making my system slower. Am I right about my notion, or its just a whim??? Is vista ultimate as snappy as home premium??

i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

I cannot access any files on the pc when I select the pc in my network I get an error which says " Cannot access \computername. I opened a browser on my laptop and entered \ipaddress of the pc . I got an error. pc cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the wireless router. I got an error. cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the laptop. I was able to see all the files on my laptop. If you look at the image, this is my network. when I attempt to access the pc named DB that is when the problem arises.

Dell Inspiron running Vista Ultimate Vista SP1. connected wirelessly to my DLink DIR 655 Router. I can only sometimes see other Vista PCs on my home network but cannot access the shared folders. I cannot see a Linkstation NAS at all. And only get to it via it's IP address. None of the host names work. Yes, sharing is enabled on all devices. Firewall is Live OneCare v2. The other PCs are fine. I've even logged into another network (physical
location) and had the same problem so I'm pretty sure it's this PC. Problem started after SP1 and OneCare 2.0 were upgraded, although I have uninstalled OneCare with no success (and since reinstalled) Here is an example of me pinging my NAS device C:UsersBarry> ping 192.168.0.143 Pinging 192.168.0.143 with 32 bytes of data:

I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:
Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.

I have PC1 running windows Vista with a wirels pci card connected to PC2 Running Vista Home Premuim connnected via lan cable to a wirelss N router. I have setup a home network with a name of "Blue" (not really the name), both pc's are configured to the same workgroup. Internet access works on both pc's.
The problem I'm having is trying to share files. When I look at my Network Map on Vista, I can see the XP pc. However when I go to map, but not my network in order to access files on the XP machine. XP doesn't have network map, but when I go into >network, I can see the files I'm sharing on the XP pc, but I cannot see the Vista pc at all. I can view my work group when I navigate to Microsoft Networks but cannot access it. So I can't figure out why I cannot see the XP pc on Vista co I can access the shared (public) folders and the same with the XP pc.
