how can i access another network resource with different credentials/password from the address bar? is there something similar in vista? everytime i try to access a vista shared folder from vista, it asks for a username & pw in a windows prompt box, even though i typed the right username/pw it still locked me out when i made several unsuccessful attempts, it looks like vista has completely locked out that pc from trying to access it. what can i do to unlock out the xp computer from accessing the vista pc?

I have a desktop that is running 64 bit Ultimate and my laptop is running 32 bit Home Premium. I have the laptop set up as wireless and the desktop as direct connect to the router. I set up a home network so I can access my drives from either machine. I can access two desktop drives from my laptop, but it won't let me access some of the other drives. From the desktop, I cannot access any drives on the laptop. The drives that it won't let me access says "\BueningsMy Music is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."
Why would it let me access some drives and not others? I have the Network Discovery amd File Sharing turned on. All other items are turned off, including Password Protected Sharing. I followed the steps of "Set up a connection or network" and it is set up as a Private Network. Let me know where things may be goofy or things to check. I'd like to get this going correctly if possible.

I have a vista machine, 32bit. I had it connected to my home network wirelessly and had a mapped network drive. I took the computer to a school, came home, and the mapped drive is no longer accessible.
1 - I have another Vista computer that has no problem connecting to the network drive.
2 - This computer still connects to the network, and has no problem going through the router and into the magical land of internet
3 - I recently bought an NAS, and again had no problem connecting the other Vista computer to the new drive. But, this computer will not map the drive. It is independent from the XP machine, so I know the XP vs Vista is not the problem.

I am going to upgrade my vista home premium notebook to vista business, but since my company is providing both business and ultimate upgrades at no cost to me, I am wondering why not upgrade to vista ultimate, since I love what I have with home premium anyway. But if ultimate contains everything that other versions of vista has, it probably means more services running in background, making my system slower. Am I right about my notion, or its just a whim??? Is vista ultimate as snappy as home premium??

I am getting intermittent memory error message saying the pc has run out of memory and trying to track down what is causing it. When I boot up the pc I see Physical memory of 3.325 Gb and used memory of 1.04GB 32% in task manager. When i go to Resource manager I can't understand which of the different types of memory (Commit, working, private) make up the 1.04 reported as used. If I add up all the processes under Working Set it only comes to about 600Mb. So 2 questions:
a) Are ther other OS processes not listed in resource monitor that are using up the unaccounted 500Mb?
b) Is Working Set the right type of memory to be monitoring to see which p[rocess is causing the reported % usage to climb so much?
I'm intending to writie down each porcesses usage every 24 hours ot try and identify the culprit. Strangly the problem has only appeared since i increased the RAM from 1Gb to 4GB!

I don't know what to do. D: I'm freaking out here. I've been to so many different sites with this problem and I haven't seen anyone else who had it. v.v Someone please help meee! T_T Also, I don't have Norton antivirus, I have AVG free. >< Everyone else with this problem that I've seen has had Norton.

"The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry". I get this error every time I try to install or update just about anything. I had this same problem a while back and couldn't find any answers so I called DELL and paid for them to fix it because this is my business computer and I needed to install something right away. I just chalked it up to the price I have to pay for my LACK of computer skills. It worked fine for several months but now it's happening again and I don't want to pay for it again. I would like to try the quoted fix but I have no idea what "that user control THINGY" is or how to turn it off. BTW, my OS is Vista 32bit and I have McAfee Security Center installed.
Quote: Originally Posted by John Doty Steve, I turned off that user program control thingy, rebooted with it off, then turned it on again and the error went away. Does Hibernation use any system resources other than the space it reserves on the hard drive? I know that it saves a file to the hard drive that is the size of installed RAM, but is it running background services that use up CPU, RAM or other resources when you are working? There are many web sites offering tips to speed up Vista, and many of them include the following statement:
"Windows hibernation background services can use a large amount of system resources. If you don't use the Hibernate feature on a regular basis you may want to disable it to give Vista a performance boost." They offer no documentation of this statement. Is it accurate or not? So, does Hibernation use any system resources other than the space it reserves on the hard drive?

Upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP. Boot drive is fine, but my 2nd drive, which is only used to store pictures, cannot be accessed. I know all the data is still there, because McAfee will scan the drive. My desktop picture is also still present. When in explorer and I click on the drive letter D, I get this message: "D: is not accessible. Access Denied". Am i missing a driver of some kind?

-set up wireless network: can see all of the shared folders on the XP machine from the Vista laptop, but can only see the Public folder on the Vista laptop from the XP machine. Several other folders, set up for sharing on the Vista laptop, can't be seen on the XP machine ("not accessible- you may not have permission to use this network resource").
- have tried both public and private settings on the Vista laptop- no difference
- Both machines are on the same workgroup
- Firewall is not part of the problem: Windows firewall is turned off on both machines, and problem persists when Kaspersky Internet Security's firewall is disabled
- user name is the same on both machines

Then I try to look there with the normal file Explorer I get an error message: "C:Documents and Settings is not accessible. Accessis denied" Now, I'm doing this from the main Admin control account. If the sys admin can't access the directory, who can? How do I get Vista to play nice?

I read an older thread on disabling/enabling Task Manager. I followed the instructions . . . but I must have a different issue regarding my Task Manager. When I control-alt-del and hit Task Manager, it comes up in my menu bar. When I try to bring it up to my screen, I see a flash waaay off to the left (off of my screen). It's apparently running, but I can't get to it I have tried the following but still having corrected the problem:
1. Removed all the spyware, etc that was on my machine
2. Ran "regedit" per various instructions (this forum's instructions were the only ones that I could actually follow and perform - which gives me great confidence that I'm at the right place - you guys are great!)
3. Restored computer
4. Tried resizing the screen to capture it I am the Administrator as this is my personal computer I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything I can think of.

I am getting error messages when attempting to open a shared drive on XPx64-sp1 machine from Vistax64-sp2rc machine: Open Folder. ULTRA-WX64DTs01i (D) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command. There are 5 machines in the LAN which are WX64-sp1, WX86-sp3, WV86-sp1, WV64-sp2rc, and W7x64. There is no problem among the latter 4 machines but a shared drive on WX64 can not be accessed from any of the latter 4 machines. There is no problem with RDC to the WX64 from any other machine.
I attempted to install on the WX64, Link Layer Topology Discovery(LLTD) Responder, KB922120, but an error message said that this is for different hardware platform, and could not install it. I noticed that the system event log showed system event ID of 2011. MS KB article says that resolution for this problem is modifying IRPStackSize value, so I did, but no go. The problem may be due to my dumb mistake or oversight somewhere.

I have a Patriot, 4 GB X-mini drive that has worked for nearly a year. However, when I tried to access it yesterday from My Computer, it gave me the following message: Please insert a disk into removable disk (F:). I went to properties through My Computer, and the drive came up as:
Nameless
File System: Unknown
Used Space: 0 bytes
Free Space: 0 bytes
Capacity: 0 bytes
I tried to run an error check, but it keeps giving me this message: The disk check could not be performed because Windows cannot access the disk. I don't have any idea where to go from here, but due to the nature of some of the files I cannot access, it is important that I recover the data as soon as possible.

Is there a group that does not include the guest account? Basically I don't want to have my backup drive accessible to the guest account. Is that possible without replacing "Users" with each individual account?

I know this problem is has alot of words to read but please read it. Yesterday my 500gb capacity drive (i have used up 15gb space) worked fully which I named BX2BXsq The next time I got to use my drive, lots of folders were deleted. I restarted my computer and accessed my drive and this error came up E: is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. My hard drive makes a funny clicking sound. I took my hard drive off and then on using another usb port and now it was called Local Disk. I took my hard drive off and then tried putting it into a mac (Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger) and the mac said that the drive was unreadable. Now when putting my hard drive in my Windows XP computer, and a speech bubble came up saying that my hardware was not recognised. I know for a fact that my hard drive still has precious valuable data. So have you got any ideas to recover data from my hard drive.

I'm using Vista Ultimate. You can suppose that if I'm writing here it's because I'm finding some problems (and I'm unable to solve them by myself). I'm quite sure that I don't have malware on my computer. It's usually not connected to internet. I think I have some kind of system files & registry corruption.
"Chkdsk" says the filesystem is ok. Next step would be running "sfc" (sfc /scannow). But it refuses to start. The message is: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I already tried it starting in "safe mode". I tried also to install "Service Pack 1" but it I couldn't.

My wife and I just got new laptops with Vista Home Premium. In File Explorer we both have several folders with blue shortcut arrows next to them, and they can't be accessed. From reading past posts, I gather these are not real, but virtual, but my question is how do I get rid of them. I don't want them cluttering up my file management windows, and I am tired of accidentally clicking on them and getting an error message.

I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...

One usb ethernet adapter for internet connection through an old router, one for a Linksys Wireless G router hard wired to remote security cameras sums up the problem where one cancels the other out. This is a problem for XP, Vista, and even 7 beta while the primary system still runs XP. The dsl connection is through an old dsl setup using a usb adapter while the Linksys pci adapter card or usb adapter once installed becomes the default network adapter.
The wireless router itself is plugged with the RJ-45 ethernet adapter directly into the main controller/dvr box for live wireless feed to the main XP system or this one as a second means along with direct plug in to a tv set in the room where the main box is located. In XP, Vista, and even the later 7 beta the same problem of running two adapters without conflict is the main question needing a working solution. This thread is intended to tax the most network familar people here.
The landlord runs the main XP system with eventual plans to upgrade to Vista while this system serves as a testing machine a good deal of the time explaining multiple OSs as a rule. The router and adapters are in working order not seeing any defects while canceling the original dsl adapter out when installed. That takes out the online connection in the process.
