I am getting intermittent memory error message saying the pc has run out of memory and trying to track down what is causing it. When I boot up the pc I see Physical memory of 3.325 Gb and used memory of 1.04GB 32% in task manager. When i go to Resource manager I can't understand which of the different types of memory (Commit, working, private) make up the 1.04 reported as used. If I add up all the processes under Working Set it only comes to about 600Mb. So 2 questions:
a) Are ther other OS processes not listed in resource monitor that are using up the unaccounted 500Mb?
b) Is Working Set the right type of memory to be monitoring to see which p[rocess is causing the reported % usage to climb so much?
I'm intending to writie down each porcesses usage every 24 hours ot try and identify the culprit. Strangly the problem has only appeared since i increased the RAM from 1Gb to 4GB!
My computer (Dell XPS 1330) runs fine without the monitor (Dell 20" SP2008WFP) but intermittently hits 100% CPU usage with the monitor plugged in - usually if I am running more than 3 or 4 standard office programmes - and then returns to running normally if the monitor is unplugged. I have 4GB of RAM and 2 x 2.5 GHz processors, so don't think this should be a problem. The laptop and monitor seemed to work fine together for a few months but subsequently the problem got progressively worse over a few months.
I have tried stopping all processes in TM when the problem occurs - none stand out as being the culprit. The only common occurrence is that the task manager process itself runs at 20%+ to 40% CPU usage when the problem occurs. I have already tried defragging, spyware, cutting out all visual effects and all sorts of other performance improvement options - I even totally reformatted the hard disk before I realised that the problem was related to the monitor being plugged in! I have tried rolling back and then re-updating the drivers for the monitor and the display adapters, but the problem persisted.
I've had Windows Vista Ultimate for a while, and recently I've been noticing that the pc is using a large amount of memory. While playing World of Warcraft, it sits on 1.5 GB of ram out of 2GB, and everything slows right down. I also have 1 Firefox window open, but I added up all the memory usage in the Task managers 'Processes' bar and it doesn't add up to that much. It also says I have 56 processes, only 23 of which show up in the processes panel. Im really not techincally minded, I just had hoped that when i first got this pc that 2GB of ram would not have been used up so easily.
I notice on my laptop with 1 gig ram is using almost 80% of it's memory with hardly anything running. Here's a list I manually jotted down from the performance memory section in control panel....
When I put in a CD and install a program, my Mem usage sometimes goes to 100%, and stays at 100% even when it is finished installing. Everything runs insanely slow, and I usually end up holding the power button to restart (if I click on the start menu to restart, it takes 15-20s for the menu to come up). I say it happens sometimes, because it doesn't always happen. It is hit or miss. It sometimes also happens when doing other tasks (see below). However, when I open up task manager (and display all processes), I do not see any processes that are using an insane amount of memory. Everything looks normal. Also, today I was backing up ~3.5gb of files from my hard drive to my external drive. My memory usage went to 100% and stayed there, just like I mentioned before (had to power off).
Just to get all of the starter questions out of the way: -This is a fresh install of Vista x64 with SP1 (SP1 is up-to-date) -I do not have any viruses -I do not have any spyware -I have ran memtest for 16 hours just to make sure it wasn't my RAM -I have no messed with the pagefile -UAC is enabled
Also, when I run a program like prime95, my memory usage goes to 100%, but when I hit "stop", the mem usage goes back to 30-40% like it should. So things are working okay. I have had this system up since June. It is not a HUGE issue, because most of the time I am not installing anything, but when I do install something, it sometimes requires me to reboot.
Both pre and post SP1 whenever I install a game my memory usage starts to climb. It usually hovers around 30-33% at idle. While installing it eventually peaks @ 99-100% and will drop to about 95-97% after the install is finished. For the life of me I can't figure out whats causing it.
I just installed lost planet and had the same issue. It happened with COD4, Supreme commander, and Crysis too. I've added screnshots from during the install, post install and after I reboot (because the memory does not go back to normal until then).
When using any icons view in explorer.exe with a folder containing MPEG-2 video clips, and/or having the details pane switched on for such folder, explorer.exe eventually uses up all available memory until windows fail to redraw. Restarting explorer.exe or the computer temporarily fixes this problem until all memory is used up again. The problem can be reproduced with folders containing MPEG-2 clips. Other file types do not seem to trigger this behaviour. The process running on explorer.exe while memory usage jumps up is the following: RunDLL32.exe "C:Program FilesMovie, Makerwmm2clip.dll",VMGShellThumbnailGenerator "{FileName}.mpg" 256 256 0,Is there a known fix or workaround?
I've been going over and over trying to solve a problem on my PC for the last few days, and while it's not an issue worthy of another thread, I do have some questions that you experienced guys might be able to either explain, help or point me towards understanding. I'm pretty fluent in computers, I've been building them since I was 9 years old, so that makes about 21 years worth of seeing things break.
One element that I never really got into, due to not experiencing, is understanding and troubleshooting IRQ conflicts. I have a massive list of entries in my device manager, and some of them share an IRQ entry with other items. Would I see any improvement in stability by putting, for example, the video card on its own IRQ channel, if my PC's only problem is freezing shortly after launching a 3d game? My video card is actually sharing an IRQ assignment with the 1394 and 4 USB controllers.
since a few days my cpu has always cpu load of about 90 % at core 2. Vista is very slow. Taskmanager shows no applications with cpu usage. Now i installed process explorer and i can see that 45% cpu usage (this is 90% of core 2) is for "System / hardware interrupts". Which interrupts are the problem, what can i do to fix this?
been trying to get my son to understand and look after his PC am sure you can all imagine how that goes LOL
Downloading Malwarebytes and trying to get him to use along with his current AV .. i am still finding on a weekly basis that running Malwarebytes im finding multiple errors & a attached file ...
I am going to upgrade my vista home premium notebook to vista business, but since my company is providing both business and ultimate upgrades at no cost to me, I am wondering why not upgrade to vista ultimate, since I love what I have with home premium anyway. But if ultimate contains everything that other versions of vista has, it probably means more services running in background, making my system slower. Am I right about my notion, or its just a whim??? Is vista ultimate as snappy as home premium??
Two computers, one XP one Vista..have been networked for a while..currently can access XP from Vista, but not the other way around. Have tried it with firewalls on both computers turned off. I disabled firewall on the Vista machine AND XP, on XP clicked on MS Windows Network. get "workgroup", Click it and see names for both computers click vista machine and get "gamebox is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. contact system administrator... network path not found"
We currently send an alert when Windows File Protection is diabled on Win2k and 2k3, I wanted to know if there was an alert and what it is when Windows Resource Protection is disabled in Server 2008 and Vista. AND how to disable WRP for testing purposes. Is it possible to disable WRP?
how can i access another network resource with different credentials/password from the address bar? is there something similar in vista? everytime i try to access a vista shared folder from vista, it asks for a username & pw in a windows prompt box, even though i typed the right username/pw it still locked me out when i made several unsuccessful attempts, it looks like vista has completely locked out that pc from trying to access it. what can i do to unlock out the xp computer from accessing the vista pc?
I was doing a sfc scan and this was what the screen said: " Verification 45% complete. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation " (end of quote). what are the possible reasons of only 45% completion, and what I should do to correct that.
So I've had my HP laptop for almost a year now, and up until a month ago it was awesome. I love Vista. But now, whenever I try to uninstall or install anything I've downloaded or try to update something or even change my firewall settings or system restore, I get a message that says: "The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry." I don't know what to do. D: I'm freaking out here. I've been to so many different sites with this problem and I haven't seen anyone else who had it. v.v Someone please help meee! T_T Also, I don't have Norton antivirus, I have AVG free. >< Everyone else with this problem that I've seen has had Norton.
"The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry". I get this error every time I try to install or update just about anything. I had this same problem a while back and couldn't find any answers so I called DELL and paid for them to fix it because this is my business computer and I needed to install something right away. I just chalked it up to the price I have to pay for my LACK of computer skills. It worked fine for several months but now it's happening again and I don't want to pay for it again. I would like to try the quoted fix but I have no idea what "that user control THINGY" is or how to turn it off. BTW, my OS is Vista 32bit and I have McAfee Security Center installed.

I added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........
i have only one monitor, and somehow it is being treat as though its the secondary monitor in a dual monitor set up. i cannot view my start menu, or view any programs being opened, as when i try to open them, they presumeably open on the phantom primary monitor. even when i try to open display settings, i cannot see the box. i am able to move my mouse to the left border of the screen and move it off into oblivion, and occasionally drag random folders and short cuts over to view.
Does Hibernation use any system resources other than the space it reserves on the hard drive? I know that it saves a file to the hard drive that is the size of installed RAM, but is it running background services that use up CPU, RAM or other resources when you are working? There are many web sites offering tips to speed up Vista, and many of them include the following statement:
"Windows hibernation background services can use a large amount of system resources. If you don't use the Hibernate feature on a regular basis you may want to disable it to give Vista a performance boost." They offer no documentation of this statement. Is it accurate or not? So, does Hibernation use any system resources other than the space it reserves on the hard drive?
Right now I am running a vista machine with 2 monitors one widescreen and my old one. I keep all my sidebar gadgets to the other monitor so I can monitor temps and system diagnostics. Today, my sidebar is on my main monitor and no mater what I do it won't go back to monitor-2, no mater what the setting is in the sidebar properties. What is going on here?
Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista detects a memory problem in your system such as a faulty RAM module, it will display a notification asking if you want Vista to try to diagnose the problem. Then again you may also recieve the sudden BSOD with the error MEMORY MANAGMENT at the top. You can manually run this tool anytime just typememory in the search box inside the start menu. This tool offers you two options: restarting immediately and checking for problems, or running next time you reboot your machine (the memory diagnostic tool must run at boot time).
Network DiagnosticsWindows Vista also allows you to check the connectivity of your network connection using the Network Diagnostics Framework: An infrastructure and a set of built-in and extensible components that attempts to automatically diagnose and correct network connectivity problems. The usual way to run this check is to open Network Center and click the Diagnose Internet Connection link on the left Vista will either identify ............
I had 4GB physical memoryon the PC. With Windows vista 32 bit, available memory is shown as 3.3GB. I asked and was told that only under 64 bit windows, will the available memory be 4GB. When I upgraded to windows 7, I chosed 64 bit, but the available memory shown in the system is still 3.3 GB. Why is this and is there a way to make the full 4GB available? It's possible that my video card is using RAM instead of its own RAM. If I install a video card with its own RAM, will the full 4GB be available?
I have a problem with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, I always seem to lose all my free RAM within an hour regardless of system activity, even while idling. I have noticed an svchost.eve process runs each time I reboot which seems to bloat constantly although when I close it down it only frees up about 800MB, what's happening to the rest of my 8GB??? When I launch Task Manager it says I'm only using 10% Memory but free RAM sits at 0?!?!

I'm using Vista Ultimate. You can suppose that if I'm writing here it's because I'm finding some problems (and I'm unable to solve them by myself). I'm quite sure that I don't have malware on my computer. It's usually not connected to internet. I think I have some kind of system files & registry corruption.
"Chkdsk" says the filesystem is ok. Next step would be running "sfc" (sfc /scannow). But it refuses to start. The message is: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I already tried it starting in "safe mode". I tried also to install "Service Pack 1" but it I couldn't.
I am fairly new to the forums, and VERY new to Vista x64. The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.
I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.
I have 6gigs of DDR3 memory at 1600hz. Running on Vista 64bit and every now and again my memory performance just maxes out. The problem can occur around the time when I am installing something but I dont think its always this way. I have read forums where it could be the hardrives performing self diagnostics. I have all the latest patches for vista.
well lately ive been watching hd videos on Internet with my new computer and i notice firefox is running at like 30-50 cpu usage and i was wondering if it was normal i thnik i can hear the fan humming alil bit too
At idle, I have 50% cpu usage at times. It seems to be msiexec.exe. I have absolutely no idea why. Is this a normal Vista behaviour? Second, at startup I have 67 processes running, then it jumps to 72, then back down to 67. I had this amount on my XP pro machine, but had probably over 60 different programs installed, as it was a shared machine with CAD programs, graphic design software, etc. Now I only have vista, adobe cs3, blackberry, and office... And for my final question, Why does eSata not able to "hot-swap"? Is this normal as well (sorry, I've always used firewire for my external drives, but now I'm trying to use eSata)
After installing Vista Ultimate, I am experiencing problems with processes using an excessive amount of CPU. However when I run the task manager, and clicking on "Show processs from all users", I can't see which process is responsible since none is consuming more than a few percent of the CPU.My computer is obviously very slow and I haven't installed any program yet.
