I recently upgraded from xp to Vista. Now I am having problems with my network access. It keeps dropping from local & internet, to local, to no connection at all. There is no problem with my internet connection or cables, etc. I know that this is a problem in Vista, but I do not know how to fix it. This is driving me crazy. Please someone help me with this problem!

I am running Vista x86 Business edition andhave a rater irritating problem with the network. Every time I try to browse the Network folder from within Vista, it seems to reset that LAN connection to all machines on the network. It only seems to happen when I try to access the network though, I have not experienced this problem anywhere else. It is also worth noting that browsing the vista shares from another PC on the LAN works fine. I read up on what this guy did ( Random disconnects while browsing - Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums - Vistaheads ) and disabled TCP/IP 6 and TCP autotuning but am still getting the problem. I have a feeling that it may be something to do with our old(ish) Belkin router; however, according to the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool from MS, my router is all set to go with Vistas new networking features.

He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a four machine network. Two laptops running Windows XP Pro SP2. One laptop running Vista Home Basic. One laptop running Visa Home Premium. Both the Vista machines are up-to-date using Windows update. The machine which runs Vista Home Pr mium is on almost all the time - sleeping at night and being woken up In the morning. The other threelog in for a few hours daily.
The modem/router is a brand new Netgear DG834GT, firmware version 1.02.19. The Vista machines each have Atheros AR5007EG wireless adapters, both running with the very latest driver dated 5 Sep 2009. The network name is "Netgear". All machines are configured to obtain IP addresses from the router, which has the correct address range settings (i.e. excluding its own address)..............
1. My network has ALWAYS failed upon RESUME FROM SLEEP using a WIRELESS connection via a NETGEAR WN121T wireless-N USB 2.0 adapter, but NOT when using a wired Ethernet connection.
2. It also works perfectly from BOOT via the WN121T wireless connection with my NETGEAR DG834N draft 802.11n (and another 802.11g) wireless modem/router on Windows Vista Ultimate, both with and without the SP1 Release Candidate.
3. But upon resumption from SLEEP, the wireless n/w connection has ALWAYS failed: attempting to re-connect to the network fails, and Device Manager reports for the WN121T that ???Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)???.
4. The only remedy is to REBOOT.
5. The consequences of this are twofold:.........
I am connected to the network using a wired connection and have the same workgroup name as the XP machines on the network. My files are stored on an XP machine that is used almost exclusively for this purpose - we call this the 'server'. I also run a couple of programs remotely from that machine, notably my mail program (Pegasus Mail).
on this Vista machine for a reason that I cannot fathom I am having a very slow connection to the files on the XP machine on the network. (Other XP machines on the network have no trouble accessing these same files quickly and effortlessly, though they are much older rickety machines by comparison with this one.) Some of these files are on the 'server' machine itself (on a Raid 5 system) others are on a Mybook external hard drive which I have removed from this Vista machine and connected to the XP one - in case this was causing the problems. I am not able to access my email program except painfully slowly and with frequent crashes or messages of 'not responding' though eventually the program catches itself and recovers. But obviously this is not workable.
I have tried to remove all sorts of devices in case they have suddenly caused conflicts (webcam, removed the Mybook from my own computer etc.). also replaced the network cable. I have also reset the router and restarted the computer. After reading a post on here I have also disabled the IpV6 on this. not able to access them using programs such as Breezebrowser or Photoshop Bridge.
Every morning I wake up, I have to re-start my computer in order to get Firefox or Internet explorer to work. Have tried all below with both wired and wireless connection. All other functions, icons and various do-dads work, just connecting. If I happen to pass out and forget to logout of either Mozilla or IE, the screen I was on stays up but when I hit re-fresh(IE) or reload (mozilla) the problem pops up.
1. Wake up and touch mouse, desktop comes up, no problem
2. Check network connection, all seems good. Network icon shows full connection, you see the globe symbol, all good.
3. Try to access either Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox.
4. I.E. says it cannot connect and Mozilla says, well it says nothing at all except for "done" in bottom left corner of screen, but leaves a blank screen.
5. Have checked my power settings, and have made sure that both plugged in and on battery that the computer is not set to sleep. Never sleep............
I had a nice network set up allowing my Laptop and Main PC to communicate both ways and transfer Video recordings from my Main to Laptop to play on the main TV running as a PC Monitor. Come the most recent set of Upgrades and Fixes last week I found that my network had died. Luckily I subscribe to Windows Secrets and last week they listed this Tech Net Article on DHCP.

I have had to reimstall Vista on a pc and now I cannot access it over tne network. All was ok this morning but since reinstallation I cannot access it, can see it on the network and can access other pcs from it but cannot access from other pcs. I think I may have overlooked something but cant think what.

Now, however, it is still possible to access other computers on the network, if you know the name of the computer youwant to access. What I want is this: Is there away in Vista to TOTALLY disable all network access while still maintaining Internet Connectivity? These are the only Vista machines on the network. All other machines are XP.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

The network connections are good / router recognizes both computers. Internet connection functional on both computers. The vista computer will only "see" the xp intermitently. When it is available, I tried to map the xp drive from vista to no avail. Error message said the computer name was incorrect although it was correct. Both computers are in same workgroup.

The problem is : Both Laptop & pc can see each other in the network. From the pc I can access the shared files on the laptop, no problem. I cannot access any files on the pc when I select the pc in my network I get an error which says " Cannot access \computername. Check the spelling of the name, otherwise there may be a problem with your network. I have attempted pinging the pc from my laptop, but it keeps timing out I can ping my laptop from my pc. I opened a browser on my laptop and entered \ipaddress of the pc . I got an error. pc cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the wireless router. I got an error. cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the laptop. I was able to see all the files on my laptop. If you look at the image, this is my network. when I attempt to access the pc named DB that is when the problem arises.

I can only sometimes see other Vista PCs on my home network but cannot access the shared folders. I cannot see a Linkstation NAS at all. And only get to it via it's IP address. None of the host names work. Yes, sharing is enabled on all devices. Firewall is Live OneCare v2. The other PCs are fine. I've even logged into another network (physical

I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:
Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.
I have PC1 running windows Vista with a wirels pci card connected to PC2 Running Vista Home Premuim connnected via lan cable to a wirelss N router. I have setup a home network with a name of "Blue" (not really the name), both pc's are configured to the same workgroup. Internet access works on both pc's.
The problem I'm having is trying to share files. When I look at my Network Map on Vista, I can see the XP pc. However when I go to map, but not my network in order to access files on the XP machine. XP doesn't have network map, but when I go into >network, I can see the files I'm sharing on the XP pc, but I cannot see the Vista pc at all. I can view my work group when I navigate to Microsoft Networks but cannot access it. So I can't figure out why I cannot see the XP pc on Vista co I can access the shared (public) folders and the same with the XP pc.
ONly 24 hrs into using Vista. I have added my Vista PC to my Home Network. I am trying to access the shared folder on my old PC that is showing on the network but I am denied access. I did have a password/user account set up on the old machine but have removed the password now. How can I access the shared folder across the network?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can honestly say I have some knowledge when it comes to computers and usually I solve it when something is wrong, but I can't figure this one out. I don't know what to do or what's wrong basically. A few days ago I was supposed to be updating a few of the programs I have, the first being Windows Live Messenger. It wasn't working so I thought they wanted us to go to the new one. I go to do that and it was installing until I got this: "Could not access network location %APPDATA%. Please close all other programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr:0x80070643"
So I go to un-install the old one (which I don't it even did) and I tried again, and again the same thing. I've also tried un-installing it from Smarty Un-installer 2009, did it and tried to install it again, and that didn't even work. I haven't tried again since. That same day I tried updating iTunes. That failed. Safari didn't update neither did iTunes, but the iPhone Configuration Utility thing did (I just noticed). I tried going the website and downloading from there, I thought it was going to install, but it didn't give a message saying it could not access %APPDATA%. This one didn't un-install, because iTunes is still accessable on the other accounts. I'm completing a scan now for any viruses (I don't think any will show up), I also tried installing Malwarebytes to do a scan for that (said the same thing: couldn't access %APPDATA%).
I'm aware that this is quite a common issue and i apologize if it's been repeated hundeds of times, but it's driving me crazy. I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust recently I turned on my laptop that runs Windows Vista Home premium and it won't identify the network. I haven't changed any of the settings on my laptop and it just started doing this. It will connect to my wireless network, but it says the Access is Local Only. There is a strong signal and everything and my roommate that has the exact same computer has no problem connecting and getting online.
Whenever I access the Network and Sharing Center and click on the red X to find out what the problem is, a window pops up and says "There might be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer. It gives me 3 options for repair: Restart the DHCP client service. Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" I have tried all three of these and none of them work.
I have scrolled through pages and pages of posts here and tried to find my solution. I must repost this issue for me. I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............

My internet connection seems to be working correctly. I've tried resetting my Linksys router, removed and reinstalled Norton Internet Security 2008, upgraded my NIC drivers, (I'm using an ASUS P5K Deluxe motherboard with built-in networking.), tried the Network repair options, etc.

I open a command line and do a ping both with ip address numbers and via name and ping works fine so there is network connectivity and name server access. I can't find any answer to why the browser will not work. I have tried the microsoft browser and mozilla neither will work. Does any one have any ideas? I am a nubie to Vista. but pretty well versed in 2000 and XP.

I am the only user and have full admin rights on both (I checked) They are connected by a wired home network. I can see and browse the XP PC from the Vista PC, install programs from the XP PC onto the Vista PC - no problem BUT.... when I am using the Vista PC and try to copy a file across from the XP PC I can see the file appear in the Vista folder (using drag & drop) but then I get the dreaded "Destination Folder Access Denied....You need permission to perform this action" you can only click 'RETRY.'or 'CANCEL'....of course RETRY just repeats the error window and Cancel removes the file that you have dropped into the destination folder. As I am the owner with full rights over the folder, does anyone know what this message means and how to set whatever 'permission' is required?

On the same pc I have AVG AV installed as well, which might complicate matters further as well. I tried to remove the trojans by following the on-screen prompts unsuccessfully...basically the prompts to remove the trojan keep coming up even though I hit Remove all (something like that). OS: Windows Vista Business. Following some prompts windows sensibly suggested that access to public networks is going to be restricted.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Vista on my desktop PC which seems to be having Internet Connection problems. My Desktop PC has 2 Network Adaptors each connected to separate routers. I have one router (A) with IP 192.168.1.1 on Adaptor A and another router (B) with IP 192.168.2.1 on Adaptor B. The only router with Internet Access is router B. The problem I have is when I open internet explorer it seems to take a very long time to display the home page, and some times it times-out completely. If I open up a command prompt and type tracert www.google.com, the first line that comes up is 192.168.1.1 - This implies that it is trying to get to google via Router A which has no Internet access. I can only guess then it gives up after some time and tries the second Network Connection.
Is there any way I can set Vista so that it looks for Internet Access on Router B first, and not Router A? I've tried various things such as changing the Network Binding order Under Advanced in Network Connections but this does not help. This did not happen under XP - XP seemed to know which Adaptor had Internet Access without a delay/timeout.
I have 2 computers at home both running XP SP2. One plugs directly into my Netgear router and the other is wireless. I recently bought a laptop withe Vista Home Premium. I was able to connect to the network before, but I think I accident;y changed something. It is now showing my network as a public network. It continually says "Identifying. Public Network)" in the Network and Sharing Center. Access is Limited connectivity. Also I am NOT able to access the Customize link in the NaS Center like I was before.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that the little blue ball/circle disappears for a few seconds on the Network Access icon in the systems tray sometimes (Vista). That is the one in front of the two monitor icons that can display in an animated way. I have not noticed this phenomenon before much. I know it displays a red cross when there is no connection & an exclamation mark when there is some problem.
