Windows Defender - How To Access The Public Network Again

Oct 19, 2009

I've run into a problem where I got a trojan horse detected by Windows Defender. On the same pc I have AVG AV installed as well, which might complicate matters further as well. I tried to remove the trojans by following the on-screen prompts unsuccessfully...basically the prompts to remove the trojan keep coming up even though I hit Remove all (something like that). OS: Windows Vista Business. Following some prompts windows sensibly suggested that access to public networks is going to be restricted.

Public Folder : Access Denied

Jan 7, 2009

My problem is this: I can access the Public Folder on the PC from the laptop but not the other way round. All access is denied to the laptop from the PC . Both computers have public/sharing switched on and AUC is off. From Internet Explorer, if I can click on network on either machine I can see the whole network, but if I double click laptop from the e-machine I get the error message. Clicking diagnose the problem results in: Nothing wrong with the network. All settings on each computer look identical yet I cannot resolve this access problem. I have searched high and low for a solution without success and then I thought the Bitlocker Drive encryption on the laptop might prevent access from another computer. Without actually turning off Bitlocker, can any of you gurus out there shed any light on the matter? I don't know whether this is the problem because I can remotly connect to the laptop via PC Anywhere from the internet.

Network Keeps Switching Between Private And Public

Jan 24, 2010

my network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3). We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment. I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away. I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. can stay I it to set as a private network?

Network Location And Internet Settings Should Be Public

Apr 22, 2009

Home or Work (Private Network) - Choose one of these locations for home [or work]... Public place (Public Network) - Choose this location for networks in public places (such as coffee shops or airports). This is manifestly wrong, as you should choose Public for Internet Connections, whether they are in a coffee shop, in at your own home or where ever; moreover, you might wish to secure even a Private Network with Public settings. The names are confusing too: Public sounds as if you are opening yourself up to everyone; Private sounds more secure.

Obviously this is the wrong way round... It took me ages (and a lot of hunting around forums like this) to figure it all out. Statements like "If there’s only one computer on your network..." don't help since the statement "network with only one computer" is surely a non-sequetur: there needs to be more than one for a network... The internet is made up of billions of computers, so technically there are billions of computers on "my" network, we just can't see each other. There is no mention at all of general internet connections, in fact. Perhaps MS could find a way to rewrite this section of Help to make it clear to people without home networks (the vast majority, probably) that their Internet settings should be Public?

Windows Defender Spyware: Open Internet Explorer, The Windows Defender Pops Up And Says That My IE Is Infected?

Feb 11, 2010

The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.

Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.

Windows Could Not Access Network Location

Sep 27, 2009

I can honestly say I have some knowledge when it comes to computers and usually I solve it when something is wrong, but I can't figure this one out. I don't know what to do or what's wrong basically. A few days ago I was supposed to be updating a few of the programs I have, the first being Windows Live Messenger. It wasn't working so I thought they wanted us to go to the new one. I go to do that and it was installing until I got this: "Could not access network location %APPDATA%. Please close all other programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr:0x80070643"

So I go to un-install the old one (which I don't it even did) and I tried again, and again the same thing. I've also tried un-installing it from Smarty Un-installer 2009, did it and tried to install it again, and that didn't even work. I haven't tried again since. That same day I tried updating iTunes. That failed. Safari didn't update neither did iTunes, but the iPhone Configuration Utility thing did (I just noticed). I tried going the website and downloading from there, I thought it was going to install, but it didn't give a message saying it could not access %APPDATA%. This one didn't un-install, because iTunes is still accessable on the other accounts. I'm completing a scan now for any viruses (I don't think any will show up), I also tried installing Malwarebytes to do a scan for that (said the same thing: couldn't access %APPDATA%).

I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

Network And Sharing Center "Windows Cannot Access \Computer Name"?

May 18, 2008

I click on view full map in Network and Sharing center on Vista, and I can see all the XP computers (because I installed the LLTD fix) sometimes I can click on the computers, sometimes I can't. I don't know why that is. Next, clicking on "View computers and devices" only shows my Laptop and router. Sometimes the other computers show up too, usually after a few tries or refreshes. When the XP computers do show up, and I double click to try to view the shared folders, I get the following error:

"Windows cannot access \Computer Name. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied."

Clicking on diagnose says this: "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection." My firewalls are set to allow computers on the network. I've even turned them off and just let Windows Firewall do it's thing. I really don't understand the spelling error. I think if that can be fixed,
the network would work just fine.

No Network Access

Dec 27, 2008

what I've done so far: My work has 4 public internet access computers. What I have done was set each of these to be a "Public Network", and have enforced the requirement to enter a password on UAC so that the public users cannot make unauthorized changes to the settings. Now, however, it is still possible to access other computers on the network, if you know the name of the computer youwant to access. What I want is this: Is there away in Vista to TOTALLY disable all network access while still maintaining Internet Connectivity? These are the only Vista machines on the network. All other machines are XP.

Network; Local Access Only

Jun 4, 2008

i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

I cannot see a Linkstation NAS at all. And only get to it via it's IP address. None of the host names work. Yes, sharing is enabled on all devices. Firewall is Live OneCare v2. The other PCs are fine. I've even logged into another network (physical

Problem started after SP1 and OneCare 2.0 were upgraded, although I have uninstalled OneCare with no success (and since reinstalled) Here is an example of me pinging my NAS device C:UsersBarry> ping 192.168.0.143 Pinging 192.168.0.143 with 32 bytes of data:

Unidentified Network / Access: Local Only

Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.

What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.

Newtork Map Vs. Network - Access Works Pc's

Mar 23, 2008

I have PC1 running windows Vista with a wirels pci card connected to PC2 Running Vista Home Premuim connnected via lan cable to a wirelss N router. I have setup a home network with a name of "Blue" (not really the name), both pc's are configured to the same workgroup. Internet access works on both pc's.

The problem I'm having is trying to share files. When I look at my Network Map on Vista, I can see the XP pc. However when I go to map, but not my network in order to access files on the XP machine. XP doesn't have network map, but when I go into >network, I can see the files I'm sharing on the XP pc, but I cannot see the Vista pc at all. I can view my work group when I navigate to Microsoft Networks but cannot access it. So I can't figure out why I cannot see the XP pc on Vista co I can access the shared (public) folders and the same with the XP pc.

Unidentified Network: Local Access

I'm aware that this is quite a common issue and i apologize if it's been repeated hundeds of times, but it's driving me crazy. I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?

Access The Network And Sharing Center

Mar 23, 2008

Just recently I turned on my laptop that runs Windows Vista Home premium and it won't identify the network. I haven't changed any of the settings on my laptop and it just started doing this. It will connect to my wireless network, but it says the Access is Local Only. There is a strong signal and everything and my roommate that has the exact same computer has no problem connecting and getting online.

Whenever I access the Network and Sharing Center and click on the red X to find out what the problem is, a window pops up and says "There might be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer. It gives me 3 options for repair: Restart the DHCP client service. Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" I have tried all three of these and none of them work.
