It all of a sudden appeared the other day. I have used "manage accounts" to try and delete it but it does not appear on there. the os I am using is vista home basic 32bit.

With xp you can press control/alt/delete to get a login screen up then login using the administrator account. On vista the administrator account is showing as a icon on the login screen. I dont want this to be visible, any ideas how to hide this?. I saw a registry hack but this removes the icon but it seems in doing so there is then no way to login without the icon.

Error on startup. After a period of time. Having scoured several topics in relation to this issue, I am still none the wiser and like many pledging for some guidance, I thought it best to post here. Some quick Background Info;
I made this computer using my old Powersupply ( Jeantech 500W) and Harddrive. I had previously used the graphics card in my old setup and had no issues. This was XP, different motherboard, processor etc. I formatted the Harddrive and installed Windows 64bit and installed all the new parts. Drivers are all up to date except the motherboard. (Of which the CD couldn't be detected)
When I turn on my computer, at the login screen I receive small blocks of colour that do not match the screens intended picture. On the log in screen this is normally minimal, but on my main desktop this will nearly cover the screen intermitantly. Sounds bad? But it will either fix itself in time with the "Windows has recovered the driver Atiamtag" Or, I pop open the Chess program and on load up this clears the issue..........

When I initially installed Vista Premium the computer would boot directly into the Administator account. I then set up 2 accounts beside the admin and Vista boots directly into the Admin Desktop. I disabled the Admin account after establishing my other accounts with administrator rights. I know get a message saying that my password is incorrect and then after acknowledging it I go to the Account selection screen.
I would like to have the account screen come up after enabling the admin account vice having the OS boot up and drop me directly into the Admin account.

Title says it all. Vista prompts for username/password to access a shared folder on an XP machine on my network. What do I have to do to fix this now? UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

I have an Acer laptop that came with factory-installed Vista Home Premium. I've had it two years and I am the only user. Today it crashed and when I restarted it, it asked me for my password at the user selection screen. I had it set up to just select the user, I don't even recall setting a password and I don't believe I ever made a recovery disk. Microsoft says they have never heard of this problem. How can I go back to no password being required at the user selection screen? Acer did not provide a Windows Vista disk.

small window: "Logon unsuccessful", etc.

I am running vista ultimate and am having trouble when logging in. When I boot the system it boots fine to the login in screen. When I put my password in it takes 33 seconds sitting at Welcome to get to the desktop. When it does get to the desktop all is fine. It also does this if I log out and back in again (just the login part). If I lock the pc and then log back in it is straight in. Surley 33 seconds is too long.

Got a question here: If Password protected sharing is off in Networking and Sharing Center in Vista...
why am I still getting a login prompt on my WinXP computer?
My network map:
The dashed line is a wireless connection; the solid line is a wired connection. "Nnet" is the wireless router. The switch is the hub which is a part of the wireless router. Michael-PC is Vista, and mdoccomputer is WinXP.

I am attempting to bypass the password login at start-up since I am the only one using the computer (64-bit version of Vista). I go through the change password routine, typing in blanks, or highlighting the new password fields and clicking on same (this worked for my laptop with the 32-bit version of Vista), but I don't seem to be able to effect a change. There must be a formal approach to this solution!

I have a laptop that was manufacturer by TOSHIBA with Vista Home Premium OS. And I haven't used it in awhile, so I kinda forgot the Windows Login Password. It's only one account on it, the "Administrator" account. So the problem is I need to login on that laptop, but sadly, I didn't make a "reset disk" for the password on it. Is there anyway I can ever log back onto it?

I have never had to use a password to get or send messages. Today I logged on after not being on for a week and now windows security is asking for a logon name and password. What the heck happened? I have been slowly downloading the updates and yes I am behind in downloading them. I am on dialup so it takes a while to download them. Is this some type of new security? I don't want to lose the emails I have by setting up a new account.

Use Windows Mail in conjunction with that e-mail address for a long time now. Two days ago it suddenly decided that it required me to sign in to be able to retrieve/send my mail. I have entered my username and the correct password in a whole heap of different ways but it just keeps rejecting anything I type in even though I know that they are correct. I have even checked all the settings against my husband's computer and they are the same other than the username and yet he can still use his Windows Mail account but I can't - it is so infuriating considering that I run a business from home and I need access!
This is the message I keep getting after it rejects my sign in information (I have removed my actual name for privacy reasons) - Account: 'my name', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate argument(s) missing.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91

Does having a password assigned to the Administer Account give it more control or power than not having a password. Or just to keep anyone from making changes to a computer. Reason for this question is I was told it did more when installing or uninstalling programs to have one. Made no sense to me.

In Vista Home Premium. I go to send an email (Win mail) and up pops a box asking for the password for the email account I am using. If I click cancel and then go to the outbox, open the email and resend, it goes through no problem. It will almost certainly do this if I have not used the computer for an hour or so (although all power saving are 'always on'). It always happens within ten mins of booting the computer in the morning. and is now happening more frequently at other times. I have scanned the computer for virus and malware etc - all clean, it's just annoying!

Qouted for various sources on the internet and re-wrote in my own words "If there is only 1 account on your vista rig, and you loose the password for the account, you have to run out, buy a new installation disc for a few hundred and reinstall"
Is this true?
One night while my grilfriend was sick as heck, she decided to change her password. not really smart cause when she woke up the next morning, she didn't remember anything from that day. so now she has no password. now, if this was XP i'd be able to open it up in safe mode, jump into the administer account and and make the password something simple. but since it's vista, the powers that be decided that it would be best if the administer account was not enabled by default. so i cannot go through in safe mod to change the windows password. i tried the reset password technique, but to do that you need a password reset disc such as a floppy disc,(no port) or flash drive that somehow has the windows install on it. right. i've tryed password cracking softwear. that worked on my home XP, and it got my password, and my brothers. but when i tried the Vista versions on her Piece of C, it came up with no password set.
we're all relitivly poor and cant afford $200 for XP or Vista just to loose all the stuff she had on her computer. please. prove me wrong. tell me how to get passed the password on her computer so that we can get all of our pictures and crap off.

I am having a nightmare with my laptop which has windows vista ultimate on it. I chose to shut down the laptop by choosing the option "Shut down after installing updates", and so it started to shut down. However, after a couple of hours I checked and saw the laptop was still on, and it was stuck on Update 3 / 3. The status screen displays the following: Installing Update 3 / 3 - 0%
A couple of moments later, the laptop displays "Shutting down" and just like that it does. Not matter which mode I run the laptop in or how much times I let it "loop-around", it returns to the same screen. The problem is I cannot even get to the login screen, let alone try something to fix the damn system! I am really against a wall here, as I have no idea what to do. Is there a way I can backup information from my hard drive while the laptop is on, but not logged on? - Is there a way I can restore the latop to an earlier state using the restore option without logging on to the system?

I don't have a password set to my account and I am currently the only one with an account on the computer, so the picture is very small on my 22" 1680*1050 monitor.

I accidently turned my Dell laptop off while it was performing windows updates. When I restarted the laptop it goes to the login screen and then goes blank (i cant enter the username/password).
I have tried the following:
1. Starting in safe mode (same issue)
2. Using the boot dvd and trying the different options in there (Repair, Restore to safe point, Memory check).
3. Using the boot dvd I have tried several different restore points, including the original store point.
4. I have looked through every forum and every post I can find and cannot find any suggested resolutions.
