Start Up Graphics Glitch 4850: The Login Screen I Receive Small Blocks Of Colour That Do Not Match The Screens Intended Picture
Feb 14, 2009
Error on startup. After a period of time. Having scoured several topics in relation to this issue, I am still none the wiser and like many pledging for some guidance, I thought it best to post here. Some quick Background Info;
I made this computer using my old Powersupply ( Jeantech 500W) and Harddrive. I had previously used the graphics card in my old setup and had no issues. This was XP, different motherboard, processor etc. I formatted the Harddrive and installed Windows 64bit and installed all the new parts. Drivers are all up to date except the motherboard. (Of which the CD couldn't be detected)
When I turn on my computer, at the login screen I receive small blocks of colour that do not match the screens intended picture. On the log in screen this is normally minimal, but on my main desktop this will nearly cover the screen intermitantly. Sounds bad? But it will either fix itself in time with the "Windows has recovered the driver Atiamtag" Or, I pop open the Chess program and on load up this clears the issue..........

I reinstalled Vista fresh on the drive and now it gives me this horrible distortion in the graphics. Everything installs fine, I assume. I just can't do anything because I can't see anything. It's not black, but has tons of blocks all over it. I was thinking it was my graphics card taking a dive, but I can get OSX86/Ubuntu with Desktop effects to run fine. So, I am at a loss, as both the other systems require graphics acceleration. It's just Vista that doesn't want to work.

I'm having some problems with my screen colour and resolution atm. Tryed system restore, updating drivers and generaly looking on google for answers but most are unclear at best.
Imageshack - myscreen
Imageshack - devices
These are 2 SS. 1st is what my screen looks like. Although I must say it looks alot worse on my acctual screen. Second Is what I figure the problem is due to them simply not working. NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS < Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

With xp you can press control/alt/delete to get a login screen up then login using the administrator account. On vista the administrator account is showing as a icon on the login screen. I dont want this to be visible, any ideas how to hide this?. I saw a registry hack but this removes the icon but it seems in doing so there is then no way to login without the icon.

The icon size of the recently run programs list on the Start Menu is set to large by default. This is great if you like the large icons but it also cuts down on the number of recently run programs that can be displayed. Follow the steps below to give your Start Menu a cleaner look and disable large icons: ...

There are numerous queries for this problem on the site but no answers. When viewing a streamed movie on the net the images are good in the small screen mode: however, when changed to full screen mode, there is only a black screen with sound. "Esc" returns the stream to the movie in small screen mode. Does anyone have a fix?

using the short-cut target line in XP I could set games to run in window or at a different resolution. How do I do this in Vista? More Specifically I want to run Atlantica Online in smaller res than 1024x768 so I can leave I running in the background but still keep an eye on it while i surf the net (a small resolution like 640x480 would be ideal). I tried editing the target line with no success. Any ideas?
If the above is impossible are there any third party programs that would allow me to resize the window how I want? Or allow me to divide my screen into multiple screens/desktops?

i want to connect my pc to my tv using hdmi and also keep my desktop monitor using vga but be able to view both screens identically. my mobo is a gigabyte ga-73pvm-s2h and im using the onboard nvidia geforce7100 /nforce 630i graphics. at the moment the only way i can connect tv and monitor is by using the nvidia control panel but i cant set diferent resolutions for each screen and run them both identically so whichever screen i set as the main is fine but when i look at the second screen res is wrong.. is there a way to have both screens running simutaneously with different resolutions(my monitor is 15" and tv 32")or a setting in windows to allow this rather than having to change the main screen all the time?

I am attempting to bypass the password login at start-up since I am the only one using the computer (64-bit version of Vista). I go through the change password routine, typing in blanks, or highlighting the new password fields and clicking on same (this worked for my laptop with the 32-bit version of Vista), but I don't seem to be able to effect a change. There must be a formal approach to this solution!

I'm building a computer and have all of the components (just need to finish putting them together). Now, I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 card and was hoping to watch Blu-Ray videos on my current monitor which is an HP w19b. The monitor has a maximum resolution of 1440x900. From what I understand of HD technology, this would mean that no, the monitor would not be able to handle the full 1080p resolution, but it should be able to display 720p.
But here is the question, will my current monitor be able to display ANYTHING from the Blu-Ray player? I think the confusion comes in when I see these monitors that advertise HD capable, but I thought all monitors were HD capable, you just need to know what resolution you are trying to display the HD at, 720p or 1080p.

A little background: was using XP 32bit since it's conception and decided to install 64bit vista home premium, since my current architecture can support it. I'm running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ (2.8GHz), 2 GB of RAM, and an nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB Video Memory).
nVidia Driver version: 191.07
DirectX version: 10.0
As you can probably discern from the screenshot below, I have a slight graphical glitch that seems to be causing little errors whenever anything is redrawn on my screen... Needless to say, this problems didn't exist when I was using XP.
update edit: went into performance tab in the advanced system settings and tried best performance options, no change, glitch persists...

I have a program, Harvard Graphics for Windows, developed by Software Publishing Corp back in the mid-1990's. Some years ago, I installed it on one of my desktops (Windows 2000 Pro platform) without a problem. Recently, I copied the folders onto my desktop with Vista Home Premium . Appropriate drivers (just three) were copied into the Windows and System32 folders. However, at start-up I get to see the logo page, but then a Harvard Graphics error message appears, as follows: "Can't start Harvard Graphics because of a problem with the Windows registration database."I never ran into this when I moved to Windows 2000 from Windows 95. Does anyone know of a way around this? I have many charts that have been developed with this software, and I would like to continue to be able to access the software.

Problem Blue Screen. No new hardware or software installed recently, last Windows vista update was on 01/15. When I start first, PC passes user registration (boots fine) and
does the normal stuff like loading software and starting the wireless internet connection via Netgear, opening some windows/programms I will close. All normal, but than comes a Blue Screen and very fast shut down of system with restart. Hardly can read the message...Look like Blue Screen appears when to much action is going on like opening of IE and Outlook... or open to many windows... or some bad programm/hardware is booting. But when I restart, restart gives a different blue screens and trouble is much earlier or directly after registering to the system.
But all starting or booting turn slower, real slow now. Start in --safe mode with net working-- the PC works, but the PC can't handle heavy workloads, is really slow in action. I cannot open --My pictures-- to see all picture files displyed on screen (2.7 GB) (the process trying to access the files in safe mode is real slow) and when I attempt to transfer the file to a USB stick, the computer is stopping in middle of action (after 50% transfer)..........

I am having a nightmare with my laptop which has windows vista ultimate on it. I chose to shut down the laptop by choosing the option "Shut down after installing updates", and so it started to shut down. However, after a couple of hours I checked and saw the laptop was still on, and it was stuck on Update 3 / 3. The status screen displays the following: Installing Update 3 / 3 - 0%
A couple of moments later, the laptop displays "Shutting down" and just like that it does. Not matter which mode I run the laptop in or how much times I let it "loop-around", it returns to the same screen. The problem is I cannot even get to the login screen, let alone try something to fix the damn system! I am really against a wall here, as I have no idea what to do. Is there a way I can backup information from my hard drive while the laptop is on, but not logged on? - Is there a way I can restore the latop to an earlier state using the restore option without logging on to the system?

I've been searching through the forum's tutorials and all through Google to find out how to change the size of the user picture in the login screen. I don't have a password set to my account and I am currently the only one with an account on the computer, so the picture is very small on my 22" 1680*1050 monitor.

I accidently turned my Dell laptop off while it was performing windows updates. When I restarted the laptop it goes to the login screen and then goes blank (i cant enter the username/password).
I have tried the following:
1. Starting in safe mode (same issue)
2. Using the boot dvd and trying the different options in there (Repair, Restore to safe point, Memory check).
3. Using the boot dvd I have tried several different restore points, including the original store point.
4. I have looked through every forum and every post I can find and cannot find any suggested resolutions.

I've just instaled SP2 for Vista on a clean install and it constantly keep rebooting, it won't get to the login screen. It's not even booting into Safe Mode. So far the boot goes as far as "Configuring Updates: State 3 of 3 Complete 0%" And then it restarts. The most annoying thing is that I haven't installed any updates, for this to happen. All other updates that need to be done are finished and the computer has rebooted a number of times before hand. I've got all my drivers and such updated but the problem still persists. The only way I can get around it is by reinstalling the OS all over again. I've tried System restore but even with that the problem continues.

When I boot my Vista 64 machine, which had been working normally until 2 days ago, the login screen comes up fuzzy--that is, I can tell it is the login screen, but the image is so highly distorted as to be unusable. The image is fine during the boot process (ie, the post graphics and the green progress bar are fine) until the Vista circle pops up. When I try to boot in safe mode, the screen image is fine, but the problem is that once it gets to the login screen the computer will reboot, even if I quickly enter the admin password. If I use a bootable Linux disk (Puppy Linux), the entire computer works fine. This indicates to me that I'm not dealing with a hardware issue.

I had used my laptop(link below) just fine in the am then when I try to sign-in in the pm it won't go past the login screen and will auto restart and again to the login screen so it becomes a vicious cycle. I have tried starting in safe mode then system restore, no luck, back to safe mode and got this error: The Recycle Bin on drive c: is corrupt or invalid. Do you want to empty ..., then tried: load thelast known good configuration, again no good.
