Every time I install a new program, the folder in the start menu of this new program is yellow, and I have to launch it for it to go back to normal...Does anyone have a tip or something that could avoid that ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy eyes are tired of this white-backgrounds-overdose in Windows Vista, and I would like to make them black. I think I can do it if I switch to "Vista Basic / Windows Standard / Windows Classic", but I would like to keep the Aero effects (transparency, etc.). Do you know if this can be done, and how? I've tried some visual styles, but all of them have white backgrounds. I guess a nice visual style with a black background would be the best solution, but I can't find one.
View 4 Replies View Related1) When changing the background from an image to just a plain color the sidebar does not change, it is still looking as if there is a background image behind it. It will only adapt to the change if you flip it from left to right, and back to left again. Same thing goes for taskbar/start menu bar on the bottom.
2) Sometime I get random re-boots when resuming from standbye or just for the hell of it sometimes.
Error on startup. After a period of time. Having scoured several topics in relation to this issue, I am still none the wiser and like many pledging for some guidance, I thought it best to post here. Some quick Background Info;
I made this computer using my old Powersupply ( Jeantech 500W) and Harddrive. I had previously used the graphics card in my old setup and had no issues. This was XP, different motherboard, processor etc. I formatted the Harddrive and installed Windows 64bit and installed all the new parts. Drivers are all up to date except the motherboard. (Of which the CD couldn't be detected)
When I turn on my computer, at the login screen I receive small blocks of colour that do not match the screens intended picture. On the log in screen this is normally minimal, but on my main desktop this will nearly cover the screen intermitantly. Sounds bad? But it will either fix itself in time with the "Windows has recovered the driver Atiamtag" Or, I pop open the Chess program and on load up this clears the issue..........
I did it a while ago, but I have completely forgotten how to do it? Perhaps somebody could enlighten me?
To be more precise, I recently installed the K-Lite codec pack, and it has added an option on my right click menu, which is displayed when right clicking on any file, called "Media Info". This is quite annoying because I don't use the program often enough for it to be on my right click menu. So I would like that to be deleted.
I would also like to add an option to my right click menu that is displayed with any file called, "Scan with Spybot - Search & Destroy". And this should obviously scan with spybot. The directory for Spybot is the default:
C:Program FilesSpybot - Search & DestroySpybotSD.exe
Preferably, it should have the spybot logo next to the scan option, but I don't know whether this is asking alot.
I wanted to try out Windows 7, but I didn't want to upgrade Vista yet because it was still in beta. So I was going to dual-boot Windows 7 and Vista. I downloaded a copy of linux that was designed for partitioning so that I could partition my hard drive. Before I partitioned it with linux, I had just one partition for Vista and that was it. I had linux trim it down about 30 gigs and then make a new partition with that free space. It did all that and didnt report any errors. So I restarted my computer and the windows loading screen came up for about a second untill it said "Windows failed to start and a recent hardware or software change might be the cause". And it gave the the option of starting windows normally or to launch startup repair. I picked start windows normally and it went back to the loading screen. After a few seconds at that it gave me a BSOD for about a second before it restarted. I was able to see the error number before it restarted. It was 0x000000ED. So after it restarted it went back to the same message again. I picked launch startup repair that time. It then told me that I should get my Vista install disk that run the repair tools............

Along with installing this, I also installed tons of drivers etc. however I do not need all of them at the start of every boot. So I wanted to delete them from the startup list, but this is not possible. When I go to Windows Defender > Launch programs, and click on the programs I want to disable from launching along with Windows, the options to Delete or Disable go grey.

Im using a resourece hacker, took ownership of the windows folder and when i get into my explorer.exe and i go to bitmap it doesnt have 6801, 6805 and 6808. It goes to 210 and then skips to the 7000s.

When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

View 9 Replies View Relatedi installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
I just installed SP 1 and now the Start Menu and Task Bar are gone. It was a lot of work to install. I'd hate to have to take it back out again. Task Bar wasn't locked but wasn't set to hide either.

I found the tutorials section to be a real big help in fact I almost have vista setup just the way I want it because of the guides. I do have a quick question I miss the way XP did its start menu as in hover over a item to go to its menu, vista you have to actually click the menu, anyway to return that to the way it used to be while still keeping the default vista look?

Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently most of the programs in my Start Menu disappeared. Almost everything that disappeared is Microsoft related, like Office. When I rebooted it said that explorer.exe and sprtcmd.exe in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms directory is corrupt and I should run chkdsk. However, chkdsk won't run. I set it to run on reboot but it never does. Then I tried using sfc /scannow but it only got to 71% before saying it can't continue. I tried going into the Programs folder but it says the directory is corrupt or unreadable. I've got Vista Home Premium, and my computer is a Dell XPS M1530.

View 4 Replies View RelatedNot all programs listed in the pinned area and recently run area of the Start Menu will run when you click on them.This is true particularly of MS Office programs.Some programs will run when clicked on, but not others.With those that won't run, you have to go to "All Programs" and select them from there.This is very annoying, because you never know which programs will run.In Windows XP, you never had this problem.I was hoping that SP-1 would fix this, but it didn't.Do others have this problem?
