Windows defender alerts me when it blocks one of my start-up programs. Trouble is, it keeps alerting me throughout the day. I want to turn the alerts off. In Defender-Tools-Default Actions, I have set High Alert, Medium Alert and Low Alert all to Ignore. But it still alerts me.

Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.
One program is blocked. I have not been able to locate it in any start up folder, but it still shows up in Software Explorer's "StartUp Programs", with a "Not Yet Classified"Classification. When I try to "Disable" the program from Software Explorer, it grays out the Disable Button. Alternatively I have added the program to Advanced Options "Do not Scan...". No effect. I would prefer not to uninstall the program, but Defender's constant flagging is annoying.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.

I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
I have just got myself a new computer and everything is working fine, except I cannot get Windows Defender to open. No matter what I try I get a message saying that the service has been prevented from starting and that I should start it manually. Can someone out there please tell me how I might do this?

I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.

I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?
View 6 Replies View RelatedError on startup. After a period of time. Having scoured several topics in relation to this issue, I am still none the wiser and like many pledging for some guidance, I thought it best to post here. Some quick Background Info;
I made this computer using my old Powersupply ( Jeantech 500W) and Harddrive. I had previously used the graphics card in my old setup and had no issues. This was XP, different motherboard, processor etc. I formatted the Harddrive and installed Windows 64bit and installed all the new parts. Drivers are all up to date except the motherboard. (Of which the CD couldn't be detected)
When I turn on my computer, at the login screen I receive small blocks of colour that do not match the screens intended picture. On the log in screen this is normally minimal, but on my main desktop this will nearly cover the screen intermitantly. Sounds bad? But it will either fix itself in time with the "Windows has recovered the driver Atiamtag" Or, I pop open the Chess program and on load up this clears the issue..........
The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
I'm running a number of programs such as skype with special settings (for skype it is Vista SP2 compatability so it doesn't use up my taskbar bar when minimized). If I do that I get a popup asking me if I'm sure I want to run the app (allow it to make changes). I don't want to turn UAC completely off but even on the lowest settings before shutting it off, it has popups for my "special" apps. How do I add exceptions for my special apps as I have quite a few of them I run on a regular basis.
