View 4 RepliesI have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Windows Defender-Turn Off
I want to turn off Windows Defender in Vista. When I go to the Help page, the wording does not agree with my option. My Default actions allows me to Remove (or permanently uninstall Defender), which I would rather not do unless necessary.
If my anti-virus software has anti-spyware should I turn off Windows Defender?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have three PCs in my house running Vista. Before installing SP1, allof them would routinely go to sleep automatically, as per the powermanagement settings. Since installing SP1, they continue running without ever going into sleep mode. I can still enter sleep mode manually, which works fine, it's just the automatic sleep that won't work.Only software in common across all three machines (other than Vista)is Office 2007 and Windows Live OneCare. Both were installed prior to installing SP1.

Yet I thought COD4 was compatible with x64.

I 've changed the avi files to open with wmp and i have also set associate file type to wmp in default programes. Still wmp will not open avi's when i double click on them nothing happens not even an error code appears? i have to drag and drop the avi files to get wmp to play them.
This may seem like a minor inconvenience but it's still an inconvenience, this only applies to avi files for some reason?
Before SP1 was installed, whenever I created a new folder, and then clicked on the folder icon while I was changing the name from "New Folder" to whatever (or pressed <ENTER>), I would immediately go into that folder, so that I would not have to double-click it to go in. Since I installed SP1, this is not happening. Is there any way of re-enabling this feature?

I have a Windows 7 RC box attached to my active directory (2003) and am trying to set it up to automatically log onto the network. Has anyone here been able to do this with Vista?
I have tried everything from modifying the user accounts to not need to enter a password (unable to do that -- I don't have that option) to editing the registry to installing Autologon from Sysinternals and a couple things I can't think of right now. If anyone has successfully managed this, please let me know, especially if you've done it on a Windows 7 box. :-)
Had set up an out of office message in Windows Mail by means of Message Rules. Currently, there are no Rules anymore visible to remove, though the auto reply messages are continuing. Would be grateful for avise how to disable auto reply.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am using Smart Defrag 1.20. The thing I would like to know is
1. Is it worth having your hard drive auto defragged?, or,
2. To manually defrag the hard drive, once a week?
As I think that running the auto defrag is using a bit to much in resources?
I recently upgraded my Norton's Internet Security to Norton 360 - which contains a disk optimizer (defrag). Prior to upgrading Norton my Vista Defrag tool worked fine no problem and always on schedule. After the upgrade to Norton, I was setting up the program and the defrag tool in Norton said "pending" which I left alone, because I was comfortable using the native defrag utility. However, now the vista defrag does not work. I went into the the vista tool to look at the schedule and it gave the last run date ( I had it set to weekly on Wed at 1am).
The next scheduled defrag said "Never" despite the box checked "run automatically". I then unchecked the box and rechecked it, and then it gave the next scheduled date which I changed to that evening. I left it alone until the next morning and it not only did not defag per the schedule but the Vista tool said next scheduled defrag "never" and Norton was back to Pending again. I have to assume this has something to do with Norton. I am told that Norton's defrag tool is tied to Vista's tool.
I've been trying to figure out how to keep Windows Mail from automatically opening the next email in my mailbox. For instance, I open an email from my mailbox... after reading it I then delete it... the next message in my mailbox then automatically opens up.

I was look for an auto log on like I used with XP called Power Toys for XP. found an auto log on However when I run it I get the error? Could Not Write DefaultUser name? .I was using my ID and password, I am the only user and a administrator. Does this auto log on work only with the Administrator ID? Or is there another reason it will not install?
