Shared Network Not Working

Oct 29, 2009

I use Vista Home Premium. I have a network that connects one computer by cable and 3 computer by wireless. I also have a LaserJet 4 Plus. It has an adapter card that is connected to the router/modem by cable. I have gone thru the 'Add Printer' procedure several times. It 'finds' a TCP/IP 'generic adapter card and, after awhile, a list of printers is displayed. I select mine. Give it a shared name and click on 'print test page.' Nothing happens. I used to have a Netgear modem but switch to AT&T wireless router. I am unable to find a list of attached devices and their IP address.

Shared Files On /XP Network

Jun 23, 2009

Network fully operational - Public Folder on Vista can be shared on XP - no problem BUT when I attempt to share another folder on Vista it requests username. Options include username on Vista, Guest, Everyone or Add name. It appears that Vista cannot see usernames on XP. Do I have to add these usernames to the Vista computer? I think the 'everyone' option applies only to 'Domains' which are not recognised on XP.

XP Network: Shows No Folders Shared?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm trying to get my network to function with my Vista x64 laptop. The network has 4 computers total: 3 XP machines, and the Vista Laptop. The three XP machines don't have any issues sharing files. However, I cannot view any XP computers at all on the Vista machine, and I cannot see any of the Vista Shared Folders from my Xp desktop. (I can see the Vista machine on the XP one, but expanding it shows no folders shared.

Rt-click -> explore results in an error: "\Studio72 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.") I am only able to run ipconfig, net config and browstat info on my XP desktop and my Vista Laptop, as the other two machines are my roommate's desktop, and our little security computer (it just records a webcam set on our front door when we're not home in case someone breaks in)..............

Properties For Shared Network Folder On HD: 3 Accounts

Mar 18, 2009

My computer is a Dell XPS 420, Vista Home Premium, my account has administrator privileges. My wife's computer is a Dell Dimension E520, Vista Ultimate, her account has admin privileges. We run OneCare Live for all security and backup needs. I installed a network backup using a Linksys NLSU2 and, up till yesterday had a 320 GB TrekStor HD as the backup device. I disconnected the TrekStor and now have a LaCie 1TB HD. Prior to connecting it to the NLSU2 I connected the new HD to my computer and ran the setup. Formatted the drive to NTFS. I connected it to the network and ran a OneCare backup from my computer. Worked just fine. This morning I tried a backup from my wife's computer and it fails (asking for a log on). On my computer I can navigate to the drive, to the HD and to the folders and subfolders. On her computer I can do the same. However when I look at the Properties for the shared network folder on the HD there are 3 accounts : Everyone; everyone (LKG..everyone); and guest (LKG...guest) (LKG... is the prefix for the NLSU2).

XP Network - Couldnt Map The Shared Documents Folder On Server

Jun 6, 2008

I have a problem trying to Map an XP drive on my Vista Home Basic Laptop that is proving a nightmare: We have several computers on our netwrok, including the XP server itself where we have our shared documents. (place where all shared files go that we want other users to see) I have mapped the same shared docs folder accross all of out XP machines. Plugged my Vista Home Basic Laptop into our network, couldnt map the shared docs folder on my server. After reading many how to's, i followed this guide: Microsoft Corporation I have downloaded and installed the LLTD responder on the server with XP All computers were restarted, now when looking on the laptops "Veiw full map" I can see FILE_STORAGE (our server) but the guide above says right click on the computer running XP, however when I do this nothing happens, it is a solid icon and clicking it does nothing.

All computers including the laptop are on the same workgroup The laptop has appeared when looking on the XP machine under viewing the network I have opened ports UDP: 137, 138, 1900 and TCP 21, 139, 445 2869 We have AVG Antivirus and Firewall on all machines including the laptop. AVG does not allow you to open ports, so the above ports were opened on my router. When I plugged the laptop into the network AVG asked me to select a profile, I selected ALLOW ALL for the time being as "Computer In Domain" was not there to select. The vista laptop has Network Disc. ON, File Sharing ON, Public Folder Sharing ON and Printer Sharing ON One thing I couldnt get my head round was the differance between Workgroup and Network. The workgroup is the same on all computers, but I wasnt aware that I had ever given a "Network" name on any of the XP machine. Vista did ask for a "Network" name. For safety i put the same name as is in the workgroup. Anyone any ideas, im desperate?

Shared Printer Can't Working

Feb 8, 2009

I have a home network set up with one computer serving as the Server for the house, it is running Vista Ultimate x64. All the printers are connected to that computer and are shared. The server also contains all of our movies and music for the house. I have several computers connected to it ranging from Vista Home Premium x86 to Vista Ultimate x64. Now for some reason I am only able to print to the printer when I am logged in on an account with the exact name and password as the one that I made on the server. Any other account I just get an error in the printer queue. So I figured I just needed to set up everyone with a user name and password on the server. I did that and the same thing is happening. I've checked the security tab on the printer and set Everyone to have full control over the printer. Printer sharing is enabled on the server and I'm adding the printer to the other computers via local port "\SERVERColour Laser". So I have no idea what else it could be. I'm also installing both x86 and x64 drivers on the server and the proper ones on the client computers.

So to recap. I have:
Server - Windows Vista Ultimate x64
Printer 1 - HP Laser CP1215
Printer 2 - HP Deskjet 5550
Computer 1 - Windows Vista Ultimate x64
Computer 2 - Windows Vista Ultimate x86
Computer 3 - Windows Vista Home Premium x86
Computer 4 - Windows Vista Home Premium x86

Each computer has one common user name and password, "Tyler", I can successfully print from any computer while on that account. However I am unsuccessful in printing from any other account. I am about to lose some hair over this.

Can't Working Network

Sep 24, 2009

I asked a question about repairing my network in this newsgroup a few days ago and got no response so I'm going to ask it a little differently Up until about two weeks ago I had a working network of three computers running WinXP and two running 32-bit Vista. I could get on any of the XP computers and access files in shared folders on the Vista machines. I could go to any of the computers and click on "Network" and see all five computers. I didn't use the network every day but it was there when I wanted it. Yesterday, I was on one of the XP machines and wanted to open an Excel file that was in a folder on a Vista machine and I couldn't access the network. This is a file that I'd opened on that machine many times in the past. I looked on the Vista machine and the file was there but I couldn't see any other computers on the network. Nothing was working like it had been the last time I looked. I hadn't changed a thing--no new software or hardware! Nothing!

After changing some firewall settings and adding some protocols on the XP machines I can get them to see each other and access files among them. I can get the two Vista machines to see each other and swap files between them. However, I can't get any connection between the Vista machines and the XP machines. They're in the same workgroup but it's like they don't know the other part of the group exists. All five computers can access the web through the router and DSL modem so I don't think it's a hardware problem. As I said, I made no hardware or software changes to any of the computers in the workgroup between the time the network worked and the time it didn't. No changes to firewall settings, no changes to workgroup name. I'm running the same firewall and same anti-virus as before.

As far as I know the only things that's happened to the computers are that the anti-virus program updated it's signatures and the computers downloaded and installed the Microsoft updates that came out. Is it possible that Windows update installed something that changed enough settings to bung up the network? I've thought about using system restore to go back before any updates to see if that returns everything back to where it was. However, I'm reluctant to do that since I haven't had the greatest experiences with system restore in the past. Every time I've used it I've had something break and I've ended up having to reinstall and reconfigure things.

Wireless Not Working. Wireless Network Detection Has Stopped Working

I am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS. I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. All critical windows updates have been installed.

I have a Canon multifunction machine hooked up to an XP computer. I can print to it with two other XP machines and a Windows 7 machine. But when I try to install the Canon Vista x64 driver on the Vista machine, it looks for a printer attached to the computer in order to complete the driver installation and it will NOT find the networked printer. So, the driver install stops. I have tried hooking the printer up to the Vista machine and the driver install completes. But, when I go back in and try to reattach the printer to the XP machine and find the drivers, the Vista machine won't find the damned drivers. Geez, Vista sucks. (But at least 7 is great)

Network XP Pro To Home Can Not Working

Mar 23, 2008

I'm setting up a computer for my house and wanted to transfer files from my XP laptop to the vista desktop. I tried crossover cable and router, but cannot completely setup the network between the two computers. I've tried with firewalls on and off, and the laptop does NOT have norton (on the gazillion forums I've read, norton is a problem.) The workgroups are the same (I changed them repeatedly just in case) and I've tried static IP addresses On Vista:

Network set to private
*Network discovery on
*file sharing on
*public folder sharing on
*printer sharing on
*password protected sharing off (also tried on)
*when viewing network map,

I can see the xp on the map but cannot click on it. (connected by dashes, I'm assuming because the xp is now setup on wireless. when I used the crossover cable it was a solid line. same on wired connection)*when viewing computers and devices, can see the xp and router but get the following error when I click on the xp: "Windows cannot access \computer-name"*I can ping the IP address of the xp but not the xp computer name**I can NOT open the folder by typing the xp IP address or xp computer name into explorer (\IP-ADDRESS or \COMPUTER_NAME)....

Even after reading all the previous posts and responses, I can't get this darned Vista box to see the two XP's that are also on the same network. Only the Windows firewalls (with sharing excepted) are turned on, same workgroup, passwords' use turned off. REGARDLESS OF SHARING SETTINGS, DRIVE PROPERTIES SHOW THAT THE DRIVES are "NOT SHARED." Network In XP Working But Cannot Connect To The Vista

Mar 23, 2008

This should not be this difficult! However, 3 weeks later and I'm still not connecting. It seems I've tried about every suggestion I can find. I will attempt to recapitulate in brief but I'm sure I have forgotten things I've tried. I have 2 and printer to a router. One wireless one direct. Another wireless xp occasionally. Works great no problem. I am trying to get just one to connect to the Vista. The Vista has been tried both wireless and cable to router.

Installed the XP responder patch. Created users with identical names and passwords. Configured NetBios on Vista. Turned off and on TCP layer 6. Re-setup networking, same workgroup. Enabled sharing, etc. Only windows firewall, tried both off and on. There is likely more but I have forgotten now. They are visible on each others full maps and they ping each other fine. On the XP when I select the Vista pc I get not accessible, no permission. On Vista I cannot see the XP except in full map view. Maybe it's something simple but I am stumped.

More RAM, Use All Four Slots, The Network Card Stops Working

Mar 23, 2008

My Dell 8400 had XP. We upgraded to Vista a month ago. No problems with the
wireless network card. (Netgear WG311 v.3)

HOWEVER - we decided to purchase more RAM for the pc. We called Dell to
purchase the RAM so it would be compatible. We had two 512MB cards in dual
slots. We ordered two 1GB cards to place in the remaining dual slots. That
gives us 3GB of RAM. Vista maxes out at 4MB according to what was sent to me
by NetGear.

The problem is that if we use all four slots, the network card stops
working. If we use two 1GB cards in dual slots, the network card works fine.
If we use all four slots, the network card stops working. We changed the
cards around so the 1GB cards were in one set and the 512MB cards in another
set. We had them paired each time, so that was not the problem.

We ordered two more 1GB cards with the thought that because the four we had
were not quadruplets, that might be the problem. It isn't. Dell took back
the extra RAM.

Dell support blames the problem on NetGear. NetGear blames the problem on
Vista. The technician at NetGear sent me a kb of Vista limits for RAM. When
I replied that we hadn't maxed out on RAM, I got an email that the email I
sent in reply couldn't be delivered.

Blue Screen Of Death And Network Is Not Working

Apr 11, 2008

I started out with Vista Ultimate on my new PC i get every now and than the famous BSOD. My PC is running 24x7 so most of the times it happens when I'm not sitting behind the pc. in the beginning (2 months ago) it happend about once a day, after a few later updates is only happend about once every 4 or 5 days. The only thing noticable I see is that after the PC rebooted from the BSOD the wireless network is not working (Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 108) that is easily resolved by unplugging the USB connecter and plug it in again.

Yesterday I installed the Windows Updates that where published on April 8th, with the result that the BSOD now occured every 2 hours (not exactly but more or less) and after the third time I decided the uninstall all the security updates from that batch that i could uninstall. There were a few other updates but Office related that I left installed and on security update that I was unable to uninstall (the prereq update for SP1: KB938371). After rebooting the pc it has so far worked perfectly again for approx 20 hours.I have no clue of what migth be causing the problem,
