View 4 RepliesI have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative. We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista. The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
Is it possible to obtain a comprehensive listing of servers and interpreters that are a normal part of the Windows Vista Operating System? These are the only kinds of programs I expect the Security updates to be fixing.
Servers = Programs included with the OS which accepts commands from the Internet or LAN external to My Computer. Interpreters = Programs which will execute any kind of source code whatsoever like HyperTextMarkUpLanguage HTML or Basic or C+ or Fortran or whatever.
I know of no other kinds of programs unless you can tell me now that may work ndependent of User Control. If I could ID these rouge programs running in the background it would be better than the security updates themselves.
I am going to be starting a group of security people. We are not trying to have anyone be above anyone else or try to talk down to less computer educated people. We just want everyone to get the MAXIMUM PROTECTION HELP they can. We will be discussing the latest and best software, the highest risk threats out there, some of the best ways to protect yourself, and how to do a few things to your computer to help protect yourself. I will be making a list at the top of this post on who is offically in the Infection Resolving Team (sounds very korny and childish but it is true so...) so everyone can ask us questions. If you have a little problem, you can just post in the System Security Forum as a normal post. If it is urgent of you have a serious problem you can either send anyone of the approved members a private message or post a comment in the blog here. Again, our only purpose is to help everyone reach there maximum protection against all of the "non-friendly" computer people out there. If you are interested in joining you can send me, Neverhavemoney, a message or post your request in this thread. Remember, A good computer starts with Good protection!!
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to use more than one SMTP server in Windows Mail? I'm working on my notebook on different locations with different internet providers. View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to set WIN MAIL so that it doesn't open a post when I connect to a server? In Outlook Express IIRC when I connected to a server it didn't open anything until I actually selected a message. WIN MAIL seems to open almost any post on the server at random. It's not the last post I read and I'm not even sure it's one that I have read in the past--it just seems pretty random. I'd just like it to sit there with the preview pane blank until I select a message. Is there any way to have that happen?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen using the email set-up wizard I come to a screen that says:
Set up e-mail servers
Incoming e-mail server type:
(drop down menu w/choice of POP3, IMAP or HTTP)
Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
(blank space)
Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:
(blank space)
(box)Outgoing server requires authentication
how to fill this out? I have a WI-FI connection that is actually my neighbors service (they are friends and gave their approval for us to use it). Sorry to be so detailed but I noticed that others who posted similar Q's but were less so (detailed) got either vague answers or answers I didnt understand.
When I go to whatsmyipaddress.com it says detects many proxy servers. I dont have a network setup- simply my desktop connected to my vonage to my modem. Is this bad? could someone explain this to me? Also I have been told vonage does not act as a proxy server

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to create my email I couldn't find my Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) server name or my Outgoing email server (SMTP) name.
I can't find my email server providers either so how do I find out what to put as my email servers?
I really don't like Vista and have had nothing but trouble getting it connected. I tried connecting it wirelessly to my AirPort wireless and it would connect and could see everything on the network including the gateway, but would go no further.
I then tried a wired connection using all the same numbers (except the last one) that I have on my other desktops at home (3 XPs and 1 2000). Again, it sees the local network fine but will not go out the gateway. Cannot ping the DNS servers. I know it isn't the wire. I plug it directly back in my computer and it works fine. The route print looks fine (except for all the On-links under the Gateway). I tried uninstalling the Norton Internet Security to see if that was a problem and making sure the Microsoft Firewall was off. Still can't get out of the local network. I never had this kind of problem with my XPs.
I have no clue what POP3 Servers are for incoming mail. (in reference to starting outlook on a new laptop, it ask which pop3 server im using, What is this question refering to? Also for my outgoing SMTP, What does that mean? What are mine? Im trying to use YAHOO. OR Gmail, Whichevers better

I was about to paper file my taxes when I tried my wife's computer with XP. It is virtually the same computer, except for OS, hooked to the same DSL via the same modem running the same Firewall / anti-virus program, Kaspersky.
