My new computer has Windows Vista, old computer had Win XP. I want to trnasfer all my data files from the XP machine to the Vista Machine. I konw about master and slave drives, whne I opened the Vista Machine, it has only two SATA connectors in the motherboard an one with the 40-pin? connector the ribbon goes to the DVD-ROM. can i connect my IDE drive to the motherboard using the DVD-ROM ribbon? should I set the XP drive as slave?

I have a new laptop running VISTA Home Premium. My home network consists of 3 PCs running Win XP Pro, 1 PC running win 2000 Pro and a laptop running Win XP Pro. All of the older w/s can map to the rest of the w/s using UNC mapping with admin user name and password. I can not get the VISTA laptop to connect to the rest of the network w/s using UNC mapping. I get the message Cannot connect to the drive location. I use the diagnose feature and it states that the drive is already mapped on this w/s by a different user.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect an external USB hard drive or a USB memory stick to my laptop, Vista throws up a message saying: ???Windows needs to install driver software for your Unknown Device???. I let Vista search, but Vista cannot find the required driver. However, when I connect the same external USB hard drive or a USB memory stick to my desktop PC, also running Vista Ultimate, Vista has no problems recognizing the device and installing the required driver automatically and without throwing up any messages. I suspect that some Vista service(s) on my laptop might be disabled or not functioning properly, but I cannot find out which one could be the cause. Perhaps someone here could point me in the right direction.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an HP laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and I have two external usb hard drives; one to store everything (my files, videos, etc.) and I use the other one for virtual machines (although virtual machines are a bit slower because of the usb speed, but I'm really worried not to harm my laptop's hard disk)
1. The question I had is that: should I connect these hard drives all the time or I can unplug them if I do not intend to use them, especially the one used for virtual machines because it is used occasionally?
2. And another concern that I have is that when I have both hard drives connected and I start my computer up, it takes much longer time for my system to boot up and sometimes even my computer hangs when starting up when both hard drives are connected...........
i am running window 7 and vista. vista is on a 250 hard drive. window 7 is on a 500 hard drive. now to change window i turn my pc off. and change the red cable from drive to drive. now what i like to know is. if i connect the 2 red cable on the 2 drive do i get to choose window on boot up. or do i need a special program to make it work. now it is with 2 drive not a single drive .

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two programs, H&R Block's TaxCut & Orca, from www.pdc.wa.gov, which will not connect to upload data on Vista Home Premium 64. TaxCut will not register, will not update, and will not efile on Vista. I can open a browser and access the sites but no luck getting the programs to upload data with Vista. I was about to paper file my taxes when I tried my wife's computer with XP. It is virtually the same computer, except for OS, hooked to the same DSL via the same modem running the same Firewall / anti-virus program, Kaspersky. The programs work flawlessly on XP but not on Vista.

We have a local workgroup setup and five or six departments have been give net connectivity. All our computers have xp installed, and when a new computer is loaded with xp, it used to detect the internet connection straight away, and would connect to the net. Now I have been asked to use vista so that slowly our organization can migrate to vista. I loaded vista on another partition on my computer. Everything was okay. But vista has not recognized my net connection. It has been asking for isp username and password, which were never asked by xp. So now
1. How to make vista understand that I have already a LAN card on my motherboard and my computer is connected to the net through the central server? Our net administrator would not divulge the username and password. He asked me to find out other means:"When xp can, why can't vista recognize?" was his question.

All the obvious things have been taken care of (my computer is on etc etc, the wireless light is on etc etc I have other computers woring wirelessly on the same connection and so forth) and it just won't recognize any networks. I went into device manager to see what was going on with the WiFi. It tells me that I need to turn on my wireless, but it is on. I went in and tried to disable it and reenable it. My computer promptly froze. After I forced it to end task I went back to look at it. It tells me that my no drivers are installed for this device, but when I look at the drivers they are there. It also tells me that my invisible drivers are up to date. Little lost as to what is wrong with this piece of machinery.
I have two PC's running Vista Home Premium. Both have SP1, and both have sharing and printer sharing installed. I can access the wife's pc from mine, but I cannot access mine from her's. If I type in my pc name "\jdesktopusers" it will pop up, but if I physically try and click on my computer's name in the network window it says \jdesktop is not accessible. View 9 Replies View RelatedI While ago i connected My xp pc [client] to my vista pc, but just recently my xp PC just disappeared from the network, i tried reconnecting it back by following some guides that i found on Google but still i got nothing, So far My Vista pc can only see the xp PC trough the network map, but when i click on network it doesn't appear at all. I dont know if im doing something wrong or if one of my PC's is causing it. This is what i tried to reconnect them again so far:
XP:
1. Control panel > Network and internet connections > set up or change your home or small office network > run trough wizard name my PC and Workgroup name.
2. Right click my C: drive > sharing and security.. > select* share this folder.
Vista:
1. Turn on: Network discovery, File sharing, public folder sharing.
Turn off: Password protected sharing.
2. Right click* Computer > properties > change settings [under "PC name, domain...] > change workgroup name to same name as XP's.
We bought a new dlink Gigabyte unmanaged switch,installed it and now the vista machines connects fine to the network but not to the internet. if i go ipconfig /release and /renew it works for a bit but then goes down again. The Windows XP machines are working perfect to the network and internet. What Can cause this problem with vista.

Is there something I'm missing with Vista and wireless, I have to different wireless networks and I now have a Vista laptop in each network that I can't connect to. All firmware/drivers is up to date on the laptop and the routers and I still can't get them to connect but I have no problem with the XP. Side note, I have had both laptops connected and surfing the Web and having access to network shares and what not but they have both since been dropped. I'd be happy to just focus on one of them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a school district and I am having trouble with one Vista Machine. This is only one of two Vista machines in the entire district. The problem is that using IE7 we can not connect to webmail (gmail) provided by our ISP. We just recently transfered over to gmail and had no problems with email prior to it. All other staff in the district can connect and use email with no problems. On the Vista machine I can connect using a different browser, no problems. I have tried resetting all settings in IE7 to the defaults. I have tried compareing the settings with the other Vista machine that does work. I have tried running in safe mode with networking, running without add-ons, smashing it with a hammer(not really), nothing works.

I get intermittent internet, it cuts out, sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes an hour, and the only way to get it back is by resetting the router, and running a diagnose + repair from Network and Sharing Centre and then by Resetting the Wireless Router, which doesn't always fix the problem. Sometimes I get a "Windows cannot connect to DNS Server" error, and sometimes it just fixes itself.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (gateway) can connect to any network (public, private, wired or wireless) with no problem but no matter what it cannot connect to the internet. I've tried as much as possible but nothing resolves this error and my isp says because my other computers work fine they can't help me. I've recycled the router and the modem, tried to ping the router (unsuccessful), tried manually setting up my connection (ip address, dns, gateway), bought a new router (belkin enhanced wireless), bought a express card ethernet port, reset winsock, but nothing works! I honestly don't know what to do since this laptop didn't include a vista disc so i don't think i can wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows without paying for something i already have. If you need any further info just let me know i'll be checking my internet every hour as i'm at the end of my rope!
On the network connections page it shows an uninterrupted line to the network which it always says is unidentified (even networks with names) but there's always a red x preventing me from getting to the internet and when i do the auto repair and diagnose it tells me to call the isp or get help from a network administrator. This problem occured shortly after my norton 360 subscription ran out and i uninstalled it to install avira in it's place.
At home I have a file server ( Its named Bigred)running windows xp pro. I am using simple file sharing on the network. Its not on a domain its on a workgroup. The only software I have running on it is tversity and utorrent. On my vista machine or any other computer, I cannot connect to \bigred through explorer, but if I add in a share name \bigredphotos it works just fine. Windows xp was just installed today with all updates.

It would not connect to the internet in fact it said Local or limited connection before I changed the channel where now lets me go on Google and surf is very limited and very slow. I can't log into my programs like MSN and Skype and only logs in when I restart the computer and drops the connection again. (Laptop since upgraded to WINDOWS 7) In the laptop, which is a wireless connection to the internet, WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE ADVISOR, & Secunia PSI will properly connect to the internet, and scan the machine for out of date software. No problems. (IE8 is the default browser)
However, in my desktop, hard wired to my home network router, Secunia will not connect. Nor will the WINDOWS 7 Upgrade Advisor. I set the rules in IE8 to allow the connection, but all I get is the barber pole saying it could take up to 10 seconds to connect, but it never does. I also set the firewall to allow this connection, in both directions. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled the program, to no avail. Same issue......
Bare with me, I am a bit computer illiterate. . .I use a linksys router (I don't exactly know what type/version, but I doubt that matters when I have connected to older models, I believe). However, the only reason why my internet will not connect seems to be that I have encrypted my router with a WEP key! I say this because I can connect to unsecured routers just fine.
I have tried connecting manually, and it will accept the WEP key I type in (well, it doesn't tell me I'm wrong). . . But once I finish typing in the WEP and checking the two option boxes (start this connection automatically, connect even if the network is not roadcasting) and try and connect (to the existing network), it says I cannot connect. I am just wondering if it's something simple. . . Making a new WEP key, perhaps? I really have no clue and I would like to figure this out soon.
