I'm using Vista on a HP Pavilion laptop and i'm having some problems with my internet connection. I know very little about computers and so struggle to follow much of the advice on these forums! I'm trying to connect using an ethernet connection so it's not a problem with the wireless. The network and sharing centre shows that i'm connected to an unidentified local network but it isn't connecting through to the internet.
View 5 RepliesI am the manager of my network at my house and i have set up my router with an encryption key i can remember. My mom just got a new laptop and we can not connect to it because i FORGOT THE KEY! My computer is wired directly to the router. I went to my IP address and wouldnt you know it, i forgot the login info! I can reset the router from the router itself, but it took me a while to set it up. Is there any way i can get around my login since i am directly connected?

They don't seem to be causing any harm and the only downside is that I sometimes have to scroll around to find the connection that is active. What are these?
I started to have problems with Local Area Connection in Vista, during logon there was two networks identified, one that I had set up and one unrecognized. This was a problem, because it disrupted the DHCP discovery. I have read here that many have the same problem, but so far haven't been able to pinpoint the cause. My solution was to try to disable the network connection and enable it. This seemed to work sometimes, but once I rebooted the machine, the whole network adapter had disappeared from device manager. I tried re-installing the driver but Vista doesn't seem to recognize it. How do I get Vista to install it back?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).

When I run the wizard to connect to a network, it does not show the add ad-hoc network option, only four others for wireles, internet and vpn connection. Also, although I have networked two PC's both running Vista, I cannot ping the second machine from the first and vice versa despite having added routes to both machines. nslookup recognises the ip address of each machine, as does tracert(I should point out that both machines obtain their iP addresses from a router which also allows access to the internet. Both machines can see the internet).

The desktop and two notebooks use XP Home Service Pack 3, the other notebook is two weeks old and has Vista Home Basic installed SP1. The desktop has a NIC and is connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router connected to a Speed Stream 4100 DSL modem.
All three XP machines have no networking problems - only the Acer Aspire 5515 with Vista Home basic which has an Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter. The problems are 1)does not connect to the internet [local only], on powering up and 2)coming out of sleep mode or 3)drops the internet connection randomly.
I tried unchecking the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology choices. OK, restart. Also tried CMD prompt: netsh Winsock reset. Neither of those seemed to solve the problem and the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology check boxes are checked and back as they were.

I'm trying to connect to some unsecure wireless networks at a friend's house for the first time and am only able to connect with local access.
I try diagnose and repair and it says that there are no issues. Three other computers are connecting to the internet just fine.
They signal is good, and there is supposedly data being sent and received but no programs will connect to the internet.
This issue has never happened before. I regularly run a registry cleaner and tried restoring to a backup from a couple days ago and that didn't help.
Recently built out of spare parts and some new parts a Media Center PC. Loaded Vista Ultimate X64 on the box and have it hard wired to my network. Issue is limited connection on my network and no internet connection. All was working great until SP1 was installed. Since then I can not access the internet, ping my router or see my WHS or my wifes XP Pro laptop, but I can see and access my daughters laptop running Vista Home Premium and my laptop running Windows 7 RC1.
I have tired to disable IPv6 both through the proprieties on my nick and through the registry, no effect. Tried netsh winsock reset, no effect, also when I go into network settings network discovery is turned off, I enable it with no effect, next reboot it is off again. I saw a post about putting local services group in the administrators group, no effect. I have a D-Link DI524 router my MC PC is showing up in the assigned IP tables, the IP that is returned when I do an ipconfig matches the one issued by the router. As I stated before I had NO network connection issues until SP1 was installed. Is my only option to un-install or remove SP1, is that even possible?
I have a Samsung Vista Home laptop that has connected to the internet without problem for over 2 years. It cannot connect now, either wirelessly or wired, but two other computers running XP can connect both wired and wireless. The connection shows as 'local access only'. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6
Vista Home Premium SP1 - trying to connect Brother HL-2142 laser printer as a _local_ printer with USB cable connection. I have installed exactly as instructed in printer manual. When I go to print, file appears in print queue until it finally errors. When I look in Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus Controllers->USB Root Hub properties->Power tab, the description shows "Unknown USB Device". Not sure if this is what the problem is. If it is, why would the USB Device be unknown? Also in Device Manager->Other devices, I see the HL-2140 printer with a yellow key hole. Printer manual says using drivers and so on for HL-2140 is fine for the HL-2142. When I try to add the printer manually, I can't work out which is the USB port. Doesn't seem to be one. I've attached document with screen shot of existing ports to choose from....
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative.We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista.The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.
I have Vista home basic 32bit And I am connected to DSL via ethernet (wired).
About a week ago I stared having a issue that my browsers would stop working(both firefox and internet explorer)I would get the typical error saying the connection has been reset.My modem was showing that I am connected tho.
At the same time my AIM messenger was working fine I was still connected and able to send and receive messages.I tried to reset my modem that didn't work.So I restarted my pc and that seemed to fix it.
This has continued to happen daily now usually around the same timeframe too.
I have scanned my pc with avast,super anti spyware and malwarebytes and they haven't found anything wrong.I tried disabling my firewal (pc tools firewalls plus) that didn't work.I read that zonealarm could cause this issue and i had it in the past but it's been long uninstalled.
The last thing i tried was i disabled avast web scanner and i reset the TCP/IP Winsock. And again it didn't work.
I've searched everywhere looking for the fix to the "Local Only" network problem. I've had it a couple days and can't find why I can't get through to the internet. I have disabled IPv6 and tried static ip which I don't think works with my router and some registry fixes and cmd commands. I'm connected through Ethernet wire so it's not a wireless thing. I don't know if I should switch back to XP Pro or maybe buy a new network card. .....The first is if I set my ip static and the second without it. It seems that if I don't set my ip static then it does not find the router and only finds unidentified network while if I set my ip static it does but I don't believe my router works with setting static ip from the computer. I can also see the other computers linked into my router but just can't access the internet making me believe it is something with the compatibility with the router and Vista. Okay here it is, this is all without IPv6.

I installed sp1 last night and this morning my internet was gone, the network controller on my machine couldn't find any connections, though the control panel insists the device and the driver are working correctly. I just uninstalled sp1 and got back my connection. I'd done the install hoping it would fix a problem that just started happening: Vista no longer recognizes software CD. Up until a few weeks ago, if I inserted a CD containing software (e.g. adobe CS2), the autoplay brought up the start menu. It not only no longer brings up the start menu, but when I click on the cd/dvd drive in explorer, it asks me how I want to format it. Nero's info tool reads and determines that the disc contains the software I want to install, but vista can't get to it. The only plus side of sp1 was that it correctly reports how much RAM I have installed, instead of 2.93 as it did prior to sp1. Any idea how to install software now that Vista no longer recognizes software media?

I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.
i used advanced vista optimiser to give my laptop a good clean out as i do every week. but this time when i went to log on the diagnostic comes and says either change proxy settings or try resetting local connection setting. i tried resetting many a time which as done no good. web address bar states where its going but the diag box comes on again.so in the mean time while this is all going on a new tab keeps on opening by its self and saying the same thing,this started to happen before i cleaned my l.p but it was just redirecting to a blank page.
that is why i did the clean.anyhow resetting the lan did not work so i reset the internet expolorer in the tools on the bar. which as worked but the same thing is still happening with the tab ,but now its redirecting to all the freebiee sites and it will not stop. i have spyware-adware-trojan software on my l.p and still no good it did pick up 3 infections which it sorted out, its driving me f*&^%*ng nuts:mad::mad:
I cannot connect to my wireless network after reintsalling Vista on my notebook. I hvae an HP dv6139us notebook. I can see the newtork and I can try to connect but everytime I try to, it does not connect for an unknown reason. I have a secure network and i put the correct passphrase in as all my other computers connect with no problems. I have also dover a little deeper into this and when you look and the nwetwork and sharing center and click view full map, under the drop down menu there is an error message that states, network adapter is not enabled. How do i enbale the adatper? As I have checked this in the device manager and it shows that this is enabled. I am totally confused and lost and about to pull my hair out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a new computer, and Windows 2000/pro on a much older (8 years?) computer. I have no difficulty transferring files from one to the other using flash memory units. Both systems are running fine. I was told, by a not always reliable person, that I can simply plug either a regular ethernet cable, or a crossover ethernet cable, into each computer and each will immediately recognize the other, and each will show up on the other's Window Explorer windows. Then, I'm told, I could drag and drop files from one computer to the other with a click of a
mouse on either computer.
So, I tried it. Purchased a new crossover ethernet cable, plugged it in, and no visible response. No sparks, no smoke - nothing. Directory trees did not change on either computer's screen. The person who told me this would work doesn't "have time to check into it right now."
My questions:
1. Is it likely that I caused any damage to either computer? Both continue to work as well as they ever did, so I don't think so.
2. Is it possible to connect the two computers together, via such an ethernet cable, and have them behave as I had been told?
I want a second computer (which uses XP) to be able to connect to my internet connection. It CAN connect to the wireless network, but cannot see the internet. I have a Netgear wireless Router, and a security enabled wireless network. The other PC can connect to the wireless network with good strength, but cannot see the internet. In Vista's Network Sharing Centrethere is a properties box which deals with Internet Connection Sharing. But when I try to tick the 'Allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection' box and click OK, I get a messagebox come upo telling me that 'An error occured while internet connection was being enabled'. Should I be trying to enable this? Am I doing this in the right place? if so what else do I need to do to enable the internet on the other machine?

When diagnosing why i cant connect, i am simply told 'you are unable to connect'. additionally, when directly connecting through a cable, I still cannot use internet, however my AOL instant messenger will work fine. I have tried restarting my computer and router with no success. All settings have been set to match my home network. I am lost as to what the problem could be.

If I restart the computer and reset the router it works fine, but in a few days it crops up again. The technique I am using at the moment works fine, but gets a bit wearing. Is there a solution to this short of hibernating the computer instead of shutting it down.

Sometimes however, as soon as I log on, a small window appears and I can connect immediately to the net via this. Is there any way that I can adjust my system to use this small window each time I want to connect?
After getting on to the net, as I try to go from one site to another, the small window appears and I have to reconnect to the internet. This has only started recently.
32 bit Windows Vista Home and I have McAfee security. This as my sons laptop and he could not get the OS to start up. I done a system restore have since been able to log in. From that point I have tried to connect to the internet with a netgear wireless router WGR614 v6. I can establish a wireless connection, but I am unable to connect to IE. When trying to do so, I get internet explorer cannont display web page.
When I try diagnose connections I get the host may be down and windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically. I am running a pc with xp home through the netgear router with an ethernet cable so I know the internet connection is good. I have tried to connect in safe mode. I have done an ipconfig reset and a dns flush. I disabled my windows firewall and still have no luck.
I'm having trouble with my internet connection on my Sony Vaio laptop. I've had this laptop for over a year now and I've been connected to the internet wirelessly through a router without any problems until last night...All of a sudden IE wouldn't connect to any sites but firefox and my messenger still worked. Then about an hour later my firefox stopped working so i decided to restart my laptop. Before it shut down to restart I got a Blue Screen and then it restarted. Now it's saying im connected to the network but Local Only and I can't connect to any sites. I'm currently on another PC in the house and the Internet works fine. Also I tried plugging an ethernet cord in the laptop and it still doesn't work.

If I'm already connected to the Internet through my ISP software Windows Mail will connect to my mail servers with no problem but if I'm not already connected it will not connect. Internet Explorer and many other programs (even several of my freeware programs) will connect to the Internet using my ISP connection when my PC is not already connected to the internet. I've tried but can't get Windows Mail to connect through my Internet connection.
I ended-up having to setup a Dial-up connection to connect Windows Mail when I'm not already connected to the Internet. It has to be set as the default connection to work but this causes other problems. For the most part it works fine but the Dial-up connection can't turn on my SpeedBand (Turbo mode) because that's embedded in my ISP software. Also, some programs use the Dial-up connection while others use the Internet connection(?)................
I have a nearly new XP machine. I also have a new Win7 machine. I continually work on other computers for our computer club. I have bought a 4 port KVM switch with DVI in and out. My XP machine (although it has a DVI connection on the back of the video card) won't connect. I have now added a DVI to VGA connector at the XP machine. Still won't recognize the monitor. The Win7 machine has no problem with it.
