I got a new computer which I successfully connected to my home network. However, occasionally it does not connect. If I restart the computer and reset the router it works fine, but in a few days it crops up again. The technique I am using at the moment works fine, but gets a bit wearing. Is there a solution to this short of hibernating the computer instead of shutting it down.
Running a SONY VAIO Pentium D with Ultimate SP1 and every now and then when I do a restart or a hard reboot the machine will sit there. All the drives run but no joy and no beep. Then I turn it off and it may start or it may not. This machine is getting near three years old and is on 18+ hours a day. Everything else is fine and there are no other issues with it. I am thinking it may be the mobo battery.
I cannot connect to my wireless network after reintsalling Vista on my notebook. I hvae an HP dv6139us notebook. I can see the newtork and I can try to connect but everytime I try to, it does not connect for an unknown reason. I have a secure network and i put the correct passphrase in as all my other computers connect with no problems. I have also dover a little deeper into this and when you look and the nwetwork and sharing center and click view full map, under the drop down menu there is an error message that states, network adapter is not enabled. How do i enbale the adatper? As I have checked this in the device manager and it shows that this is enabled. I am totally confused and lost and about to pull my hair out.
I'm running Vista Home Premium on a custom-built computer with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 4 GB RAM 32-bit. Actually, I'm not sure if the freeze is caused by Vista or IE 7. Two or three times a day when I'm performing some task, doesn't matter what, the computer stops responding. The mouse pointer still works and there are no error messages, it just doesn't respond to the mouse or keyboard. After about 5 - 10 seconds it returns to normal. I would classify this as a minor irritant at this point,
I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a new computer, and Windows 2000/pro on a much older (8 years?) computer. I have no difficulty transferring files from one to the other using flash memory units. Both systems are running fine. I was told, by a not always reliable person, that I can simply plug either a regular ethernet cable, or a crossover ethernet cable, into each computer and each will immediately recognize the other, and each will show up on the other's Window Explorer windows. Then, I'm told, I could drag and drop files from one computer to the other with a click of a mouse on either computer.
So, I tried it. Purchased a new crossover ethernet cable, plugged it in, and no visible response. No sparks, no smoke - nothing. Directory trees did not change on either computer's screen. The person who told me this would work doesn't "have time to check into it right now."
My questions:
1. Is it likely that I caused any damage to either computer? Both continue to work as well as they ever did, so I don't think so.
2. Is it possible to connect the two computers together, via such an ethernet cable, and have them behave as I had been told?
I want a second computer (which uses XP) to be able to connect to my internet connection. It CAN connect to the wireless network, but cannot see the internet. I have a Netgear wireless Router, and a security enabled wireless network. The other PC can connect to the wireless network with good strength, but cannot see the internet. In Vista's Network Sharing Centrethere is a properties box which deals with Internet Connection Sharing. But when I try to tick the 'Allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection' box and click OK, I get a messagebox come upo telling me that 'An error occured while internet connection was being enabled'. Should I be trying to enable this? Am I doing this in the right place? if so what else do I need to do to enable the internet on the other machine?
I am unable to connect to any wireless network. When diagnosing why i cant connect, i am simply told 'you are unable to connect'. additionally, when directly connecting through a cable, I still cannot use internet, however my AOL instant messenger will work fine. I have tried restarting my computer and router with no success. All settings have been set to match my home network. I am lost as to what the problem could be.
I am using Vista and wireless E180 USB Modem connection from 3. For a long time i has been working fine, but now i cant connect to the internet. I gives me the message - command line option syntax error type command/?
I can't get onto the internet with my laptop. Get the message IE cannot display webpage. I have diagnosed connection problems, and there aren't any. I have tried both wireless and ethernet networks. My desktop is working just fine . I have been working on this for 4 days now, and have not come up with a solution.
When trying to connect to the internet I have to go through a series of operations, viz, start, connect to, dial, close and then finally load net. Sometimes however, as soon as I log on, a small window appears and I can connect immediately to the net via this. Is there any way that I can adjust my system to use this small window each time I want to connect?
After getting on to the net, as I try to go from one site to another, the small window appears and I have to reconnect to the internet. This has only started recently.
I recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).
32 bit Windows Vista Home and I have McAfee security. This as my sons laptop and he could not get the OS to start up. I done a system restore have since been able to log in. From that point I have tried to connect to the internet with a netgear wireless router WGR614 v6. I can establish a wireless connection, but I am unable to connect to IE. When trying to do so, I get internet explorer cannont display web page.
When I try diagnose connections I get the host may be down and windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically. I am running a pc with xp home through the netgear router with an ethernet cable so I know the internet connection is good. I have tried to connect in safe mode. I have done an ipconfig reset and a dns flush. I disabled my windows firewall and still have no luck.
I'm using Vista on a HP Pavilion laptop and i'm having some problems with my internet connection. I know very little about computers and so struggle to follow much of the advice on these forums! I'm trying to connect using an ethernet connection so it's not a problem with the wireless. The network and sharing centre shows that i'm connected to an unidentified local network but it isn't connecting through to the internet.
I'm having trouble with my internet connection on my Sony Vaio laptop. I've had this laptop for over a year now and I've been connected to the internet wirelessly through a router without any problems until last night...All of a sudden IE wouldn't connect to any sites but firefox and my messenger still worked. Then about an hour later my firefox stopped working so i decided to restart my laptop. Before it shut down to restart I got a Blue Screen and then it restarted. Now it's saying im connected to the network but Local Only and I can't connect to any sites. I'm currently on another PC in the house and the Internet works fine. Also I tried plugging an ethernet cord in the laptop and it still doesn't work.
I have a few issues with Windows Mail (Vista) connections. If I'm already connected to the Internet through my ISP software Windows Mail will connect to my mail servers with no problem but if I'm not already connected it will not connect. Internet Explorer and many other programs (even several of my freeware programs) will connect to the Internet using my ISP connection when my PC is not already connected to the internet. I've tried but can't get Windows Mail to connect through my Internet connection.
I ended-up having to setup a Dial-up connection to connect Windows Mail when I'm not already connected to the Internet. It has to be set as the default connection to work but this causes other problems. For the most part it works fine but the Dial-up connection can't turn on my SpeedBand (Turbo mode) because that's embedded in my ISP software. Also, some programs use the Dial-up connection while others use the Internet connection(?)................
I have a nearly new XP machine. I also have a new Win7 machine. I continually work on other computers for our computer club. I have bought a 4 port KVM switch with DVI in and out. My XP machine (although it has a DVI connection on the back of the video card) won't connect. I have now added a DVI to VGA connector at the XP machine. Still won't recognize the monitor. The Win7 machine has no problem with it.
I moved into a new house and for some reason my computer won't recognize any networks. All the obvious things have been taken care of (my computer is on etc etc, the wireless light is on etc etc I have other computers woring wirelessly on the same connection and so forth) and it just won't recognize any networks. I went into device manager to see what was going on with the WiFi. It tells me that I need to turn on my wireless, but it is on. I went in and tried to disable it and reenable it. My computer promptly froze. After I forced it to end task I went back to look at it. It tells me that my no drivers are installed for this device, but when I look at the drivers they are there. It also tells me that my invisible drivers are up to date. Little lost as to what is wrong with this piece of machinery.
I While ago i connected My xp pc [client] to my vista pc, but just recently my xp PC just disappeared from the network, i tried reconnecting it back by following some guides that i found on Google but still i got nothing, So far My Vista pc can only see the xp PC trough the network map, but when i click on network it doesn't appear at all. I dont know if im doing something wrong or if one of my PC's is causing it. This is what i tried to reconnect them again so far:
XP: 1. Control panel > Network and internet connections > set up or change your home or small office network > run trough wizard name my PC and Workgroup name.
2. Right click my C: drive > sharing and security.. > select* share this folder.
Vista: 1. Turn on: Network discovery, File sharing, public folder sharing. Turn off: Password protected sharing.
2. Right click* Computer > properties > change settings [under "PC name, domain...] > change workgroup name to same name as XP's.
I have just installed vista ultimate onto an internal sata HDD and followed my ISP's instructions to the latter___now what I have is that I can connect to my ISP's server but cannot go any further__which means I cannot connect to my home page or to email___I could at one point connect to my AVG update__but not now , I have turned off windows firewall _____have been on the Internet since1998 and was connected to Microsoft's network , so I do have a good perspective of how to setup and connect_____but this is baffling me____am using my old and trusted XP Pro at this time on a different HDD on the same computer.
i have a different case. I have a wireless modem that is capable of wl and wired. i am fine with the wl part, but when whenever i just plug in the lan cable, it connects me to the internet without asking for the user name and password. can anybody give me the steps on how to change the settings for me so that the com will request for a password and username before connecting to the internet.
I am a novice with computers and am having problems setting up a home network. My desktop is running XP and is cabled to a Netgear wireless router. My wireless laptop is running vista. I can access the internet without any problems on my laptop through the router, but can't connect to the desktop. It would come in handy to access files, but the main reason is i want to use the printer that is connected to the desktop. My router does not have a USB, or flash port. During my fumblings I have had the laptop appear on the desktop and vice versa in workgroup computers, but I can,t access the computer once it appears.
I have a dell inspiron 1545. This morning i was connected to my home wireless network no problem as i do everyday. A technician came out and installed new cable and new internet today. He tried to set up the internet on my laptop but it will not connect to any net works not even my old network that i used problem free this morning. My other computer is connecting no problem to both the new network and the old network. I can see all the networks in the area but when i click connect the box just dissapears. when he took my laptop to set it up it was connected to the old network connection and immediately after he disconnected me from the old one i could then no longer connect to any network.
I have a problem with connecting Vista 64 Home Premium to wireless network. Hardware - tried D-Link DWL-G510 and Edimax 7128 adapters with newest Vista drivers I have 2 wifi networks broadcasted by Linksys WRT54G and Airlive WP-5460AP (latest firmware) - different channels set, both with WPA TKIP. Vista connects from time to time to Linksys but either only locally with no internet acces or with very poor internet transmission and then dropping connection. Connection to Airlive is rejected as wrong passphrase (although its correct). With no encryption only local connection to Airlive is possible. XP computers work with no problems with both devices.
My internet has been turning off on me randomly for a good 5 seconds, and it happens daily. I figure it was my internet I set up at home, so I'd connect to another network. Same thing happens. The little internet icon, with the two computers and a picture of the world, the world would randomly disappear which causes my computer to not respond to the internet.
where they have wireless set up. It works fine on my gf's mac (all the comps on the network are macs) but my PC cant connect. It connects with the network (after a good couple of mins identifying) but not with the internet.

This related to a Toshiba Satellite U305-S5077 laptop running Vista Home Premium with an Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter. Trying to create an ad hoc network fails with no indication of the reason. Trying to connect to an existing network fails with an Error log entry of "failed due to an unknown reason". I have been using ad hoc networking between two other Vista systems without any problems. The wireless adapter works and has current drivers.........
I cannot connect to my existing small home network unless I plug directly into the cable modem. Three other PC's in the house connect properly via the router/switch (all XP machines) but I cannot. I have disabled firewall, have no AV or other security software installed yet, have checked all settings

How can i reset the network adapter. completely back to factory settings, i know my cousin messed with it to get better. download speeds and ever since then it has been giving me issues.
How do I connect a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium to a network of several computers running Windows XP Professional using network cables? When I select "Connect to" in the start menu, set up a "connection or network", the available options include:
1. "Connect to the internet", but the laptop is already connected to the internet 2. "Set up a wireless router or access point" - I don't want this 3. "Manually connect to a wireless network" - I want to connect to a non-wireless network 4. "Set up a wireless ad hoc network" - I use wires! 5. "Set up a dial up connection" - I have a broadband connection already working 6. "Connect to a workplace" - I want to make the laptop part of the home network
Which of these options should I choose, or should I do something totally different?
I am a tech for an isp company. I have had several customers call in and have different issues with Vista. One is that the network is not recgonizing the network. It is with different routers since we service different ISPs. It works for a bit then it doesnt. Vista says that it cannot connect to the undientified network. I also have a problem with windows mail. It prompts for username and password. they are correctly entered. and when you reenterthem it pops back up to have you put in the username and password. The only time that the recgonizing the network, saying it was an undentified network. So one customer i had made a home network then Vista recgonized the private network. Is this standard for Vista?
