Wireless Not Connecting To Internet. Access Local
May 2, 2008
I just bought a new Dell laptop that is installed with Windows Vista. I am not able to connect my wireless to internet. It says access local only. I have no problem when connecting using cable direct to Boradband. Never had this problem with old laptop using XP.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW370j which has worked flawlessly for the past 3 months I owned it. But now, I wake up and get ready to do some work on it, and the damn thing is local access only. I skyped with my dad last night, so I know it was working perfect before I went to bed. However, I believe I left it on so It might have updated something I am unaware of. I did a system restore back to 3 days ago. I have another laptop, a toshiba, and it can connect fine. I have hard reset my router (which usually fixes the connection problems). And I have also restarted the laptop, disabled and reenabled the wireless network connection, turned off and on the wlan switch on front. On my router their is no security set. Its just boot up and go. I sure also add that the Sony is Vista Home Premium 64bit, while the toshiba is Widows Vista Home Basic 32bit.

A Lot of Vista users have trouble connecting to the internet over wireless. The result being a state known as local only where the PC has a connection to the Wlan but no internet. One of many cures to be found on the Internet, which seems to work, is to disable IPv6. How to disable IPv6

It's the Internet, LAN and wireless. Problem is that after a time period X they just all want to go to "local only mode". Just to mention, I have three Vista laptops, which all are doing the same thing, and my only XP laptop works just fine. So it's pretty much narrowed down to Vista laptops...No matter what Microsoft wants to say.
So what happens? -> I have a private network (wireless is encrypted with WPA/PSK and the password is correct...), it connects allright and the mode is "Local and Internet". After some time, it can be two minutes or one hour, it just suddenly goes to "local only mode" and stays that way.........

I installed Vista Business on a new computer (Asus P2) and it keeps loosing the internet connection intermittently. Local access always works. In the network are 3 computers, 2 Vista desktops, 1 XP Home which acts as a file and printer server and a Draytek router behind a cable modem. The 2 Vista PC's are new and both have the same problem. When the XP machine was the desktop PC this problem never occurred, and it still doesn't as the XP machine always has a live internet connection (the cable provider is wonderfully reliable). The machines are connected via a wired 100Mbps network...............

I have a Samsung Vista Home laptop that has connected to the internet without problem for over 2 years. It cannot connect now, either wirelessly or wired, but two other computers running XP can connect both wired and wireless. The connection shows as 'local access only'. I have tried so many things, and have come to a grinding halt

I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.

I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6

I had to use my new HP laptop, connecting Belkin Share 5x; 802.11g to Time Warner Cable, to set up my network. After about 15 minutes or when I come back from 'hibernate', etc., I get "Local Access Only". I've replugged the modem power cord but most times the repair message is to connect a cable to the adapter.... which defeats the purpose of a laptop. Belkin was installed first with and then without using an Ethernet cable; I get local access only message both ways. And perfect Internet when I do plug in the cable. I've spent hours on the phone with Belkin Support; no luck. My XP PC, using Linksys adapter, picks up the connection beautifully. What to do?

I have been on the phone collectively for 6 hours with AT&T as well as had a technician out here to look at this problem. I have a new wireless router box. The whole At&T system went down briefly (tvs and all). When it booted back up my computer wouldn't recognize the wireless network. After getting a new box, it will now recognize the wireless network in my home. It says I am connected to the network with excellent strength but I still cannot get online. My desktop works fine and I plugged the ethernet cable into my computer and it still won't get online being hardwired to the router. My firewalls are turned off. I have run an ipconfig with the following message:...................

a friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?

The computer starts up with wireless networking and wireless connection working fine. At some seemingly random time (usually a few hours) my connection status will go from "local and internet" to "limited connectivity" with the little yellow warning icon. I try disconnecting and reconnecting, it can't connect. I turn off and on the adapter using the on-keyboard button, it says it is going "off" then "on" but connection is not restored. "Repair" attempts fail immediately, with no explanation given, it just says it can't connect.
I can't ping any IP address or websites, I get "host unreachable" messages. The only solution is to restart, at which point everything is fine. Note that in this time when the wireless is not functioning, I can plug in an ethernet cable and be connected to the internet just fine. I did IPCONFIG/ALL in the connected state, and the 'after' disconnected state. In the connected state: Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:........

I have a home network with a linksys wrt54gs router and 3 pc's running XP home. home and pro. I got a new Vista computer and inserted a linksys wmp54gs wireless adapter into it. I updated the router firmware a week before I got the new computer. I connected to the internet even though I had the wrong workgroup name. In attempting to find the other computers I fixed the workgroup name so it was the same and tried other things to no avail. I updated the adapter drivers because I found it had generic ones and yesterday I installed Vista SP1.
Now I can't get the internet anymore, much less file sharing. I disabled all firewalls for awhile. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON, Network set to Private, File Sharing: ON, Public Folder Sharing: ON, Password Protected: OFF, Media Sharing: OFF. I've run the repair wizard a number of different ways. I don't know enough to fool with Wireless Network Connection Properties unless someone holds my hand.
Here's what ipconfig says: Windows IP Configuration

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No...........

What do I need to enter, or what do I need to do to bypass this window?!

We have a home wireless network with a laptop and desktop both on XP. I've successfully added my new laptop with Vista to the network, but cannot connect to the printer that runs through the XP desktop. I've scanned some of the discussions, but nothing has worked so far. I've checked all the firewall settings, have file, printer and public sharing set on the Vista laptop.
The desktop PC is hardwired to the wireless router. The other XP laptop still prints through the system as normal. it's a Dell AIO 922 printer that has an XP based driver. Ihaven't been able to find a Vista driver for that printer. Do I just need a newer printer?

I have an intermittent problem that is driving me nuts! I am using Vista Home Premium on a Dell 1501 with an internal wireless card. My router is on a pc running XP. The router is a linksys WRT55AG running 802.11g. All of my other computers have no problem connecting to the router through wireless. The vista machine goes into this fit 80% of the time where I get the infamous yellow triangle telling me I have limited or no connectivity and I can not access internet (Local only - whatever that means). I went to Microsoft help page and found out that the power saving feature messes things up and since then I am running at high power so that's not the issue. It does not matter where the computer is. Even if I am sitting right next to the router, it still does not connect to internet. 20% of the time it starts right up (like right now) and I get the little earth thing on the taskbar and I can get to the internet. Dell of couse said it is a Vista issue and I am sure Microsoft will tell me it is a Dell issue. There is nothing wrong with the wireless card and I have run all kinds of diagnostics on it and it has the latest driver.

We have a wireless network setup in my house. I however am connected directly to the router with an ethernet cable. This was fine until recently when I was having a latency problem and RoadRunner had me bypass the modem to connect directly to the modem so they can make sure my router wasn't the problem. After that, I plugged the ethernet cable back into the router and now I keep getting prompted for a username and password for the PPPoE stuff.
My problem isn't connecting to the internet, I'm able to do that. But randomly, and it truely is random because sometimes it pops up and sometimes it doesn't on the same website, this PPPoE username/pass will pop up and sometimes if I hit cancel I'm able to load the page like normal and continue on. Other times when I hit cancel it does not load the page and I have to wait until later to try and load it again. The internet is broadband and from my reading should not require PPPoE or a username/password. Hopefully I've provided enough info, I'm not very techy and am not the one who setup the network. T

my Gateway M-6318 is not connecting to the internet. It was working fine when connected to an ethernet cable at the apartment, but wireless didn't work, but now at the house neither work! Cox has came down two times to fix this, but nothing. I have been playing around with it since the move, but no luck at all. It does not work wirelessly or wired. We have two laptops. One works and one doesn't. It also says that something called DHCP is not enabled, but I don't know how or where to enable that if that would be the solution, but many said to me that it is only for wireless networks.
