Connecting A Sony Vaio To Wireless Network: Switch On Wireless Adaptor Capability
Mar 23, 2008
a friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?

some of you might recognize me from the windows 7 forums, this is my first post here. I have never used vista except to help my friends so I am not very familiar with it, but it's very close to the windows 7 interface so it's not that hard to learn. My friend has Vista and has a problem with her wireless. she has a lenovo R61i Laptop. the router is linksys WRT54GC. randomly the wireless capability gets disabled even though the physical switch is not changed ( is always on ), this happens usually when the PC is restarted or when the router is restarted. sometimes we restart the PC or the router but it doesn't occur, so I cannot re-create the problem easily.
I googled a bit and saw some people suggesting this could be because the wireless service is not set to automatic, so I checked services and the only service that seems to have to do with the wireless is the WLAN service, and it is set to automatic and started. all we have to do is just do diagnose and vista will say that the solution to the problem is found , which is to enable the wireless capability, so I click on that and it will enable wireless and everything will work. but for my friend is it confusing as she thinks there is a problem with her internet connection or her router, I told her it is a simple bug with vista ( I think ) and I will look for a solution.
So What else can I check? we had limited time today but tomorerow I will try more things, maybe I will try an update for the wireless driver. btw it is an intel built-in wirless. I thought I would ask if any of you have run into an issue like this and what did you do to reslove it. sounds to me like a bug with vista as I said but not really sure...Windows Update is turned on, so I asume the latest updates for vista are installed but i did not check if SP1 is installed or not.

I have a problem with the switch button for my wireless network adapter on my laptop. It doesn't turn the radio on when the laptop restarts. I suppose, it stays on off no matter what the button position is. So at every boot one has to:
- wait until it fails, (so all programs needing network at startup fail too)
- click on the network icon in the system tray, diagnose and repair
- wait for Vista to work out that there is no wireless connectivity,
- click on turn on wireless connectivity then wait until Vista repairs itself.
After that is works happily until the next reboot. I repeat - it is not some software option. The on/off switch doesn't work (nor the function key). Question 1 Can I switch on the connectivity on startup to allow this to happen seamlessly. Is there a cmd command which I can setup to run at startup.
Question 2 Is there some way of creating a shortcut which would allow the click of one button rather than going through the learning experience each time that the connectivity requires to be switched on.

Ive had a new PC for Xmas and its running Vista Home Premium 64Bit. Im looking for drivers for my wireless adaptor its a Invetel Wireless USB Adaptor (UR054g) Device Manager/Windows Picks it up as Cohiba 3887 Rev0
The company no longer supports this device, i remember they havent released a version for vista 32bit either, but i managed to get it working on Vista 32bit by using drivers for another wireless adaptor (I cant remember what one) If anyone has heard of this, knows any drivers that will work or has any they think might work please give me a link, ive been randomly trying different drivers all day, the closest i had it one that started to install but then i got an error saying the System Cannot find the specified file Here is a screenshot So if you know any drivers, have any to suggest or know what the above error means please post ASAP

I use a 3Com 3CWRDR100A-72 router that has worked faultlessly with many devices in my house; I use MAC Address filtering for security. However I have a brand new Sony VGN-FZ21Z that will not connect wirelessly to it...well sometimes it has but most of the time it doesn't, I have the router set to broadcast SSID and the FZ21Z sees it OK. With no encryption the FZ21Z will not automatically connect after coming out of standby or being shut down. Using WPA it has managed to connect probably 2 times out of 20 but mostly it fails - the log reporting a timeout error. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-N38Z sat next to it that is fine even when the SSID is not broadcasting.

I have forgotten the Username and Password for the Login ID... and it is not the default (Username: *blank* Password: admin). I have heard you can hold the reset button on the back of the wireless router but will this reset my wireless network? By that i mean... will i be able to connect with my laptop still through that wireless network or will i have to set it up again?

I have a home network with a linksys wrt54gs router and 3 pc's running XP home. home and pro. I got a new Vista computer and inserted a linksys wmp54gs wireless adapter into it. I updated the router firmware a week before I got the new computer. I connected to the internet even though I had the wrong workgroup name. In attempting to find the other computers I fixed the workgroup name so it was the same and tried other things to no avail. I updated the adapter drivers because I found it had generic ones and yesterday I installed Vista SP1.
Now I can't get the internet anymore, much less file sharing. I disabled all firewalls for awhile. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON, Network set to Private, File Sharing: ON, Public Folder Sharing: ON, Password Protected: OFF, Media Sharing: OFF. I've run the repair wizard a number of different ways. I don't know enough to fool with Wireless Network Connection Properties unless someone holds my hand.
Here's what ipconfig says: Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : HPQuad
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No...........

I'm having a difficult time restoring my computer to its factory settings. I already backed up most of my important information on a # of DVD discs. I just can't get Windows Vista (32) to re-install. I tried pressing F-10 when the computer starts and Launch the Vaio Recovery. It went through most of the reset but then the screen just goes blank for a very long time and I'm sure its frozen there. The computer I am trying to reset to factory settings is a Sony Vaio Desktop VGC-LT18E, the model it says on the back of the computer is a PCG-281L. I never made the recovery discs. Is there any other way to get these discs without ordering them through SONY? Online versions? Etc..?

I have a Belkin wireless-N router. I have 3 computers hardwired, and 3 computers that are wireless with a passphase. My new Vista computer is finding my network, but when I ask to connect I receive an "Enter Credetials" window asking for a User name, Password, and Logon Domain. Never saw this with XP. What do I need to enter, or what do I need to do to bypass this window?!

I'm really frustrated at this and feel I've tried everything. I've been searching all over the internet for help but to no avail - nobody seems to have this specific problem. I have just bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-NR11Z/S (2 GHz Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo T2750; 2 GB RAM; Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Version). It has an integrated wireless switch on it and is running windows Vista. These two things don't seem to agree with each other. I boot up the laptop and the wireless connection works fine, I connect to the internet straight away. I then put it to sleep in the way I used to using standby on XP (closing the lid basically). When Vista comes out of sleep mode I find that I can't connect to the internet, and the little light on the wireles switch is off.
I diagnose the problem and it tells me to turn on my wireless switch, which is odd as it is already on. The only way to get the internet working again is to restart the computer. "ipconfig/renew" in command prompt says the media is disconnected. Device manager says the device is working properly and disabling then enabling it doesn't help. I've just installed the latest driver (11.5.0.32) and that hasn't helped either. Changing power settings to maximum performance does nothing as well, neither does turning the switch off then back on again. My wireless device is "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection". It's basically when I come out of sleep the computer can't recognise the wireless switch, or it turns itself off even when it's in the on position.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop which came with Windows Vista. Does anyone know how I can proceed to burn a recovery CD or CDs or DVD in such a way that if my hard drive crashes along with the hidden restore partition it contains then I can purchase a new laptop hard drive, insert it and screw it into place, and then reinstall Vista on it using the recovery CDs or DVD I made from my Sony Vaio?

We have a home wireless network with a laptop and desktop both on XP. I've successfully added my new laptop with Vista to the network, but cannot connect to the printer that runs through the XP desktop. I've scanned some of the discussions, but nothing has worked so far. I've checked all the firewall settings, have file, printer and public sharing set on the Vista laptop.
The desktop PC is hardwired to the wireless router. The other XP laptop still prints through the system as normal. it's a Dell AIO 922 printer that has an XP based driver. Ihaven't been able to find a Vista driver for that printer. Do I just need a newer printer?

I have an intermittent problem that is driving me nuts! I am using Vista Home Premium on a Dell 1501 with an internal wireless card. My router is on a pc running XP. The router is a linksys WRT55AG running 802.11g. All of my other computers have no problem connecting to the router through wireless. The vista machine goes into this fit 80% of the time where I get the infamous yellow triangle telling me I have limited or no connectivity and I can not access internet (Local only - whatever that means). I went to Microsoft help page and found out that the power saving feature messes things up and since then I am running at high power so that's not the issue. It does not matter where the computer is. Even if I am sitting right next to the router, it still does not connect to internet. 20% of the time it starts right up (like right now) and I get the little earth thing on the taskbar and I can get to the internet. Dell of couse said it is a Vista issue and I am sure Microsoft will tell me it is a Dell issue. There is nothing wrong with the wireless card and I have run all kinds of diagnostics on it and it has the latest driver.

I am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS. I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. All critical windows updates have been installed.

I connect my laptop (Thinkpad X60S on Vista Business) to a WRT54G linksys wireless router and let's say my SSID is HOME.
My problem is this: When I try to connect Vista sees 3 and sometimes 4 networks of the same SSID, e.g. HOME, HOME (2), HOME (3) and HOME (4). It is the same network. Why is this happening and how do I solve it?

I am trying to connect a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, running Vista Business, to a wireless network set up on a desktop running XP(sp2). I have previously connected the lappie to similar networks without problem. However... The network shows up as 'available'. When I click on 'connect', it says it can't, because it is not automatically configured to do so. So I manually set up a profile for the connection under the list of sutomatic connections.
It then said it couldn't connect because the security settings were wrong. Now, if you hover the mouse over the network in 'available connections', it says the security type is WEP-PSK. This is not an option under the security types listed under connection properties. I've tried using all the WEP options available, with no success. The thing always says that the security details are wrong. Incidentally, as an experiment, I tried disabling all the security on the network and then connecting. It said it had connected, but with 'limited connectivity', and wouldn't let me access the network. Don't know if that problem is connected...

I can't even find the printer through the add printer thing.
