I have a Sony Vaio laptop which came with Windows Vista. Does anyone know how I can proceed to burn a recovery CD or CDs or DVD in such a way that if my hard drive crashes along with the hidden restore partition it contains then I can purchase a new laptop hard drive, insert it and screw it into place, and then reinstall Vista on it using the recovery CDs or DVD I made from my Sony Vaio?
View 8 RepliesI'm having a difficult time restoring my computer to its factory settings. I already backed up most of my important information on a # of DVD discs. I just can't get Windows Vista (32) to re-install. I tried pressing F-10 when the computer starts and Launch the Vaio Recovery. It went through most of the reset but then the screen just goes blank for a very long time and I'm sure its frozen there. The computer I am trying to reset to factory settings is a Sony Vaio Desktop VGC-LT18E, the model it says on the back of the computer is a PCG-281L. I never made the recovery discs. Is there any other way to get these discs without ordering them through SONY? Online versions? Etc..?

View 9 Replies View Relateda friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?

The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
I have been asked by my company to evaluate Vista Buisness for use in our company. All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. Does anyone know a place I can download Vista OEM, (Note I only want the files don't want a pirate copy) which I can use with our OEM key.

The volume hotkeys work by default with win7. (maybe in hardware) Brightness is available by right-clicking the battery indicator (by clock) or by running "windows mobility center". For my SZ650, I had to install the SFEP and SPIC drivers to clear device manager. I could not find hot key drivers in 64x.

If I uninstall Home ver during installation of Ultimate, why would I need to keep the recovery copy of Home ver on "D" that came with the computer?
Shouldn't I get rid it and free up that partition for other use... then just make a complete computer recovery copy and store it on the USB external drive? I like what I have read a litte about the Maxtor One Touch backup--- but have never used it. I presume it will do a complete computer back up?

I have a brand new vaio and when I shut it down last night it "hung" - so finally I switched it off at the plug. Today I cannot get anything other than a blue screen.
Should I take the battery out and try and re-install it or is this something that a computer expert will have to sort out. Its such a pain.
I am running Windows Vista Business on a Vaio VGN-TZ21WN and I loathe the entire experience. The notable changes in SP1 list gives me some hope, however SP2 won't come up in Windows Update. Before I use the standalone install, I have read all the possible reasons why this might happen and it appears the only driver issue left is the Intel video chip: I am stuck with 7.14.10.1387
The update from Intel won't install - asking me to get an update from Vaio. Vaio are not offering anything new yet. Longshot time: Has anyone else here forced an install SP1 in a similar situation? I am keen to at least try and fix this nasty, nasty OS before I am just forced into buying a Macbook instead.
I have the (presumably) dreaded "problematic driver" issue on my VAIO VGN-430N/B Laptop. It uses the "stwrt.sys" driver noted as problematic on MS's website for SP1: (SP1 not offered by Windows Update). An updated driver is not available on Sony's website or on the MS Update website.
I suppose the best thing to do is to wait for Sony to figure this out and put the update on their website or send it to MS for inclusion in the MS Update process. Apparently, after that is updated, SP1 will be offered. Funny, Sony support knew nothing about this issue. Told me to try defraging my drive and to try again... sheesh! that's my plan. It occurs to me that this may be a better plan than downloading the full SP1 and trying to "force fit" it into your system. I've read so many heartaches about trashed systems.
my friend has lent me a dvd with a recording of a sports game on it but when i try and play it i wont open at all, nor can i convert it using dvd to video file thing. I tried to download the camcorders driver from the sony support site but need to have the actual camcorder to install it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI use a 3Com 3CWRDR100A-72 router that has worked faultlessly with many devices in my house; I use MAC Address filtering for security. However I have a brand new Sony VGN-FZ21Z that will not connect wirelessly to it...well sometimes it has but most of the time it doesn't, I have the router set to broadcast SSID and the FZ21Z sees it OK. With no encryption the FZ21Z will not automatically connect after coming out of standby or being shut down. Using WPA it has managed to connect probably 2 times out of 20 but mostly it fails - the log reporting a timeout error. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-N38Z sat next to it that is fine even when the SSID is not broadcasting.

They have been no help so thought id post here and see if anyone had a similar prob witha different program. Install seems to go fine. Progress bar reaches 100 % but then reverses back down to zero. Have uninstalled the program. Deleted it and cleaned the registry with Regvac. Not all the Sony keys can be removed. Are there some as standard within the registry. Is this the problem? I know this would be done through boot.ini however i have no idea how to do so. Also id make a seperate partition on my hd of ten gigs just for the backup image.
View 6 Replies View RelatedA bit of confusion had occured during a repair of windows to fix the "Black Screen of Death (KSOD)" issue. I was told to use a Vista installation disk to repair a Dell laptop, as we no longer have the original disks. There was a question as to which version of windows was already on the hard drive and I chose the wrong one. (Not my fault, Dell gave me the wrong info).
The result was that, apparently, the old Windows (Vista Home Premium) was moved to c:windows.old and the new version (Vista Home Basic) was installed into c:windows. Therefore, all of his applications are no longer available. Is is possible to restore the old windows by booting to a command prompt and renaming the directories? The oringinal installation disks did not use a license key and I fear that, eventually, Genuine Advantage will ask for a license key. This is his only machine and I really want to help the kid out.
Had to reinstal Vista x64 Premium on my computer, and I am having a reoccuring error during installation.-"The computer restarted unexpectedly or has encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click OK to restart your computer and then restart installation." -The computer acctually restarts during the -completing installation- step of installing the 32 bit Vista Premium, there is a second CD that I put in later on to upgrade it to 64 bit. When I got my computer a year ago it came with Vista x64 bit preinstalled and I havn't tweaked any settings like volatge, or anything like that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had just installed Warhammer Online and everything was going well. The following day after i had finished gaming i logged off. From there i was about to click the little red shut down button but it was unclickable. After some time i just released the battery from the back. To see if everything was ok i tried turning it on again and it said Windows Error Recovery. It gave me 2 options, Startup Repair Which was recommended and normal startup. I clicked startup repair but when i did the screen went black and brought me straight back to Windows Error Recovery. No matter how many times i click repair it doesnt work. If i click normal start it just Brings me to the screen where it says Microsoft and there a little green bar flashing over and back as if loading. After some time it goes black and i have to remove battery to turn it off.

View 7 Replies View Relatedthe problem is with the compaq presario F500 which i gave as a gift to my cousin, unfortunately neither of made a recovery disk in the begining, later on his computer crashed and he brought it to me, now i dont have recovery disk neither have a recovery partion, i intalled a new windows and also activated it, is there anyway i can create a recovery disk or somehow i can use the windows data to create a recovery partition so in future we dont need to find the drivers and everything from scratch.
