Had to reinstal Vista x64 Premium on my computer, and I am having a reoccuring error during installation.-"The computer restarted unexpectedly or has encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click OK to restart your computer and then restart installation." -The computer acctually restarts during the -completing installation- step of installing the 32 bit Vista Premium, there is a second CD that I put in later on to upgrade it to 64 bit. When I got my computer a year ago it came with Vista x64 bit preinstalled and I havn't tweaked any settings like volatge, or anything like that.
I am upgrading from XP to Vista (on the way to Windows 7). After it completes the compatibility check it starts to copy files. About 20 minutes into the process the upgrade aborts with the following message: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."
Having transferred all the data onto my other computer (both with Vista) how do I proceed to synchronize the data on both? The Sync Centre does not provide any information and no amount of clicking will provide any. Are there any write ups on this matter?
A bit of confusion had occured during a repair of windows to fix the "Black Screen of Death (KSOD)" issue. I was told to use a Vista installation disk to repair a Dell laptop, as we no longer have the original disks. There was a question as to which version of windows was already on the hard drive and I chose the wrong one. (Not my fault, Dell gave me the wrong info).
The result was that, apparently, the old Windows (Vista Home Premium) was moved to c:windows.old and the new version (Vista Home Basic) was installed into c:windows. Therefore, all of his applications are no longer available. Is is possible to restore the old windows by booting to a command prompt and renaming the directories? The oringinal installation disks did not use a license key and I fear that, eventually, Genuine Advantage will ask for a license key. This is his only machine and I really want to help the kid out.
Dose any one knows why i can see 4G of Ram in my PC only 3.2 ???they told me you have to install 64 bit so idid! but nothing happens in graphic designer.
I'm running Vista Home Premium with all the latest Windows Updates. I've been reading how Windows Live Mail (WLM) is an advanced version of WM so I finally decided to see if I could download and install it. Below is the link that I used to download WLM. I actually got to that link by Googling WLM and was taken to the site below. My dilemma is that I think I wound up signing up for Windows Live Hotmail so that I really can't tell if I've got WLM or not. Sorry to be so dense. I'm not even sure if these are one in the same. Yikes! Can anyone tell me if the `Mail' program I downloaded ((I had a choice to download other components (like Photo Gallery, etc.)) but only chose WLM). Do I now have is WLM or is it just a hotmail account?
I have windows vista home premium...Security Update for Microsoft. NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack (KB929729)will download, but not install....Rec'ved error codes 80246005 and 643. It downloads over and over for months.....any connection to AOL or Trend Pc-Cillin?...I'm technically challenged, so please reply in step by step solution, if you have one.
I had Vista on an nVidia RAID configuration (with two IDE drives in the array: sda and sdb) and wanted to install Linux, so I got myself a SATA HDD (appears as sdc), installed it, and proceeded to install Ubuntu on that drive. Well, GRUB overwrote my MBR and wouldn't even boot into ANY OS (I kept getting a GRUB stage 1.5 error 21). After trying to fix this problem, I decided to try to get things back to square 1 and start over with the dual boot thing. I erased everything that was on the SATA drive, then I booted into the Windows Recovery Environment last night and tried the "Startup Repair". I sat there thinking for about two hours and said that it couldn't fix anything. Then I brought up the command line and did:
bootrec /fixmbr -> says it completed successfully bootrec /fixboot -> says element not found bootrec /scanos -> finds one windows installation (my Vista installation on the C: drive)
What have I done to my computer? An interesting note: I downloaded and burned SuperGRUB to a CD, and if I boot from this CD I can use the Boot Partition tool to boot into Windows. But this is far from perfect as if I want to boot into Windows I have to go through the CD.
So my question is: Is there any way to repair my Windows installation (namely the MBR), or do I have to do a clean install? From what I understand my HDD configuration is as follows:
hd0 (blank) hd1 (has Windows on it) ---- ---- SATA Drive (sdc) nVidia RAID Array (2 IDE drives: sda and sdb)
Once everything is back to normal, how do I install Ubuntu the 'right' way?
I originally had Windows Vista Home but Business was all he had so that is what I tried using, both 32-bit. I deleted all files thinking I would just be able to install it and get it over with. So now I do not have any operating system installed. Everything works fine up to the point where it restarts and I get to the Completing Installation (Last step) and it will run for a while on that point and the screen will flicker twice and after a moment the computer will lockup and then it will not go any further. The computer I am using is an Acer Aspire 5515.
I have OEM version of windows vista 64 home premium. Installation goes normally but when computer reboots first time it shows an error message. My son used Windows easy file transfer to shift data from his internal HDD (PC running Vista) to an external HDD before Windows 7 installation on the internal HDD. Windows 7 installation completed OK. Restoration of data from external HDD with easy file transfer appeared to work OK - but he can't find his emails (everything else is good). We know Windows 7 does not contain OE and plan to use Mozilla. Where should Mozilla look to import the emails - we can't findthem. (full path if possible)? Alternatively, is there a free program that will unwrap the MIG file that is still on the external HDD. I am told that easy file transfer does not allow selective data transfer to a user defined destination folder.
When I tried to install Vista Service Pack 1, it gave me an internal = error. I went to the web link provided there, and done all the necessary = steps except Windows Update. The computer I want to install service pack = 1 onto, is not connected to the internet. So I downloaded the full = service pack,and tried to install it there, but now it seems that it = needs additional updates from Windows Update. Can anyone please provide = me with a list of updates needed on that computer to allow Service Pack = 1 to be installed, and then I could download them manually.

i was loading a new windows biz. unto a frozen windows vista basic machine. i could nt do any back up disc cos it does nt start up. after about 2 hrs of loading files to the computer there comes an error message that the system can't load the files. now am trying 2 get back to my old frozen state but does stop from booting over and over again. i must say that i only chose the option to push the files n stuff to windows.old so i could go catch it in a second moment but now i dont even get the chance to start it up at all.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop which came with Windows Vista. Does anyone know how I can proceed to burn a recovery CD or CDs or DVD in such a way that if my hard drive crashes along with the hidden restore partition it contains then I can purchase a new laptop hard drive, insert it and screw it into place, and then reinstall Vista on it using the recovery CDs or DVD I made from my Sony Vaio?
I have been asked by my company to evaluate Vista Buisness for use in our company. All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. Does anyone know a place I can download Vista OEM, (Note I only want the files don't want a pirate copy) which I can use with our OEM key.
As the Threadtitle says, my new PC just arrived with Vista Ultimate x64, and I want to know if it's possible to create Partitions on my HDD's after the Installation of Windows Vista? Or do I have to reinstall Vista to do it?
I have just been reading previous solutions to this problem and understand it is to do with HP. Unfortunately I do not have a disc to insert as I have changed from XP to Vista and the CD I received with my HP printer is for XP, I therefore downloaded the install of the printer from the HP website for Vista. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this annoying installation window that keeps popping up a million times?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop that this past week decided to do a Windows update and afterwards was running at 100% cpu and really slow. After everything I did and everything I knew to do I decided to clean the HD and re-install the OS. I partitioned the HD and tried to install Vista. It got all the way thru to the point it was "suppose" to reboot and ask for my name and comp info and just shut down. When I turned it back on a window popped up saying something to the effect of "windows restared unexpectedly or had an unexpected error please select ok to restart your computer and installation of Windows" so then I have to re-install all over again and it failed again and again. I ran the pre-boot system assessment and found out my HD crashed. I installed a new HD and ran the pre-boot assessment again and everything checks out but I'm still getting the box to pop up cause it keeps turning itself off at the same point as I mentioned above. I can't/ don't know how to get into DOS so I can check the motherboard but I'm getting ready to throw this thing up against the wall.
When I insert the DVD, I click on 'Install Now' and the whole installation process works fine. But, right at the very end, it says 'Completing Installation'. Then, it says 'The installation was unsuccessful so the computer is reverting back to your previous version of windows'. Then my computer restarts back as Windows XP. I have made sure I have all the system requirements and have downloaded and run the upgrade advisor. I have installed the vista home premium on my laptop first and it works fine. It just doesn't seem to want to install on my desktop computer.
I'm wondering if there is a simple way to take your Vista Installation Disc and use it to create a custom installation disc that also includes updated drivers and updated hotfixes. The goal would be that during a clean install, those updated drivers and Windows Updates are installed automatically.
For a specific example, I use a USB Wireless Adapter. If I could create a custom windows disc that includes those drivers, then I my USB Wireless Adapter would be recognized and I could therefore allow Windows to connect to the Internet during Setup to see if there are any hotfixes and updates.

I am trying to clean install Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. If you read my other post, I got around the blue screen about page in non paged area. I got the bad ram stick out and got a new one for my computer. (Toshiba Satillite). And I install it and it goes good until completing installation then it hangs.
I installed Vista a while back, on a system pretty much formatted this way:
partition 1: linux partition 2: XP partition 3: linux swap partition 4: extended { partition 5: linux home partition 6: linux usr partition 7: Vista
This worked fine. Perfectly, in fact, and I was really pleased with how smooth the Vista install went. I noticed that Vista installed its bootloader on partition 2. Since I was going to trash XP at some point, I figured I would cross this bridge when I got to it. I got to that bridge last night. It was time to install a different flavour of linux, and trash XP. I had Vista Ultimate x64 installed on my machines, and wanted to install the x86. But, when I tried to install the x86 after deleting the x64 version, I now get an error that says that "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." I have reformatted the drive and all else that I can think of, but, it it continues to throw the error message. What should I do? Took out 2G ram as suggested - leaving 2G. Get through black screen with white bar "Windows loading files". Then blue screen with white horizontal bar for 35 minutes +/-. Then Install Now dialog box. Enter key code. Checks off "Copying files" Begins the "Expanding files" and goes to 11%.
Next message box: "Window cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Cord: 0x8007045D. (Reviewing this error in the knowledge base does not seem to speak to a new installation.)
I reviewed my MOBO instructions and I quote: "It is important to remember that before installing the driver CD that is shipped in the kit, you need to load you operating system." So what drivers does the Vista software think it needs? I spent more than 3 phone hours with Microsoft help and they had me putting in my Win 98 disc made a royal mess of my situation. I'm back now to the beginning and yet still no installation.
I just acquired a new Fujitsu U810 UMPC, no optical drive. Before I had a chance to get to it, some smart person managed to power it up and force a shutdown during the initial Vista installation run. Now I keep getting "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, please restart the installation. I have tried Safe Mode and Repair (found no problems), and still get the same message.
I heard there is a way to reset Vista to 'out of box' setting. Normally one would use the Recovery disks to re-image the HDD but I don't have a USB optical drive, plus that takes time. I am still researching the external optical drives available, but looks like I may have to hasten my efforts. I have a very pretty, cute UMPC. But at the moment it is just a paper weight.
I have Ultimate 32 bit that can't be upgraded to 64 bit because it is OEM. Can I leave it installed on one partition and then install Vista Business 64 bit on another partition, running both versions on the same PC? I already have the 64 bit Business which is why I'm asking.
