As the Threadtitle says, my new PC just arrived with Vista Ultimate x64, and I want to know if it's possible to create Partitions on my HDD's after the Installation of Windows Vista? Or do I have to reinstall Vista to do it?
View 7 RepliesTwo of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:
Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical
NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct. The volumes are:
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS
Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess). We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.
I just got a 500GB HDD to upgrade in a laptop and will be installing a clean Vista,I know how to make the partitions but i need some estimates of the sizes.Is/will the OS partition grow?I know it obviously will cause of system updates an such but can the "Program Files" folder go on the Data partition so programs can be install there an the system partition never grow etc.?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.
1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.
I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.

1 onto, is not connected to the internet. So I downloaded the full =

1 to be installed, and then I could download them manually.
i was loading a new windows biz. unto a frozen windows vista basic machine. i could nt do any back up disc cos it does nt start up. after about 2 hrs of loading files to the computer there comes an error message that the system can't load the files. now am trying 2 get back to my old frozen state but does stop from booting over and over again. i must say that i only chose the option to push the files n stuff to windows.old so i could go catch it in a second moment but now i dont even get the chance to start it up at all.

All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. Does anyone know a place I can download Vista OEM, (Note I only want the files don't want a pirate copy) which I can use with our OEM key.

The other day my new computer (Dell Inspiron) came with a 320 gig HDD. Yes, it has the annoying EISA configured partition of 55 MB (EDIT 11/15 just caught mistake, edited from GB to MB) but that's not the big issue.
Another partition is Drive C and allocated with 288 GB and has the OS on it. Only 22.9 GB being used.
The last partition with 10 GB is drive D (recovery).
I want to take a BIG piece out of the C partition and create new partitions.
Using EITHER the Disk Managment tool OR diskpart.exe I am ONLY allowed to shrink C by 128 GB. So after using either, C is 159 GB and the new partition is 128 GB. And many reports around the internet say gparted don't work neither.
I want C to be around 30 GB - 50 GB
Sure I could BUY Partition Magic 8.0 for $70, but this is ONE TIME reallocation. That's a little pricey for a one time shot and I do not support Symantec.
Well, I had 2 versions of Vista running from 2 partitions of the same physical drive:
C: x86 (the original install) (active/primary)
K: x64 (installed later to test it as I wanted more than 3GB ram) (primary)
I then decided to get rid of the C:x86 version and just use the K:x64 one so whilst in K: and using partition software I deleted the C: and merged the K; into the free space. Seemed like a good idea at the time! Well now it won't boot at all. I'm getting the message "NTLDR is missing" at startup. So, using the Vista install disc, I got into DOS or CMD or whatever they call it nowadays and I can see that K: is now called C: My original x86 C: file structure is gone but my old K: X64 file structure is now under C:
If I want to format my HD on vista or remove partitions, what is the procedure? All I have is the back up DVD's that I made. My original HD gave me intermittent problems so I abandoned it. Is there any way to get the recovery program from the original disk onto my new hard drive?

Resizing Partitions with Windows Vista:
Click on the Start Button and right click on Computer and select Manage.
Expand the Storage section and select Disk Management.
Then just right click on any partition and select either Expand or Shrink to change the size of the partition....
Has anybody installed Vista twice in separate disk partitions on the same PC? I've been successfully running multi-boot with 2 XPs and a Vista on 1 PC. There's plenty info about on how to do that. Now I'm going to separate all XP installs onto 1 PC, and all Vista installs onto another PC. Will this make life easier? So I'll be running Vista Home Premium twice on 1 PC. One install will be for production use, and the other for testing.

I delete these files SEVERAL TIMES A DAY with disk cleanup and then I find more of them in WINDOWS/Temp We are talking 60-70 GB of files that are clogging my system, not to mention how slowly it runs. If answered before, sorry, couldn't find an answer with the search.

When, however, I do the boot from the DVD, Vista does not erase the disk and does not create the two partitions indicated by my file.
I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista. Vista Antivirus Pro has appeared and is creating havoc on my system. Is anyone familiar with Vista Antivirus Pro? I removed my laptop from my network and then I ran a boot scan with Avast! It said that it removed a Trojan, but today, Vista Antivirus Pro is back. I don't know what else to do.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a computer with Windows Vista and may have incorrectly chose to have my 250 GB hard drive with two partitions (C&D) each 50%. I was offered partition of 50/50%, 60/40% or 40/60%. They actually came through at 111 and 108 GB. At present partition C: has the operating system, all program files and all personal data files. Partition D: is empty. There is also a third recovery partition (E) which is about 10GB. I have searched the post and can't find an answer which pertains directly to this. I was planning to place all my data files in a seperate partition (D to make it easier for backing up data.
1. Is the 50/50% good for what I want to do or should I have chose 60% for the operating system and programs and 40% for data?
2. Since partition D: is empty cnd I change the size of C&D partitions now to 60%/40% leaving partition E: untouched?
3. If yes how do I do it?
4. How do I make my programs save all data, photos, music, video etc go to partition D automatically?
How do you create an account with your windows mail? I'm not talking about hotmail or anything like that, I'm talking about the program that comes with your computer, and registering your hotmail account onto that program. I got as far as entering your 'incoming mail server type' and 'outgoing mail server type.

Problem is there is no "New Contact Group" item on my Vista Mail toolbar when using the Windows explorer. I have it set to make 16:9, the movie itself IS 16:9 but the program insists on squishing it into 4:3. If I make a install cd from the XP machine, can I install it on my other Compaq machine that is running vista (it came with XP Media Center Edition 2005 but it had all this crap preloaded onto it). Or, can I reformat the XP Media Center Edition PC, and then make an install dvd out of that (i.e. will it remove the crap that Compaq put on it?).

I have changed my motherboard and processor (dual core). The old motherboard was corrupted. Vista Ultimate upgrade version, not OEM, didn't work anymorrow. I tried to reinstall Vista. System refused to reïnstall, because it was an upgrade version. Then I tried to reïnstall my original Windows XP version. This was unsucessfull because Windows XP don''t support Dual Core! What do do? Going tomorrow to the shop and buy a new Vista?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI had been running Vista since it came out last year with no compatible issues at all. However, there were several issues with performance and finally late last year I gave up and went back to XP. Now that the SP1 is available, I want to go back and install Vista, but for some reason, my computer won't recognize the disc. It trys, but just can't load it. I've tried other DVDs and have burned a couple and they all work fine. For whatever reason, the problem is with the Vista DVD.

I currently have windows xp media center and am trying to upgrade to vista home premium using the upgrade version. Basically whenever I get to 27% of the 'expanding files' process on the installation i get a message which says 'windows cannot prepare the computer to boot ino the next phase of installation. to complete installation, please restart the wizard' or words to that effect.... I have tried opting for a clean install or an upgrade and get the same problems every time. I have run the upgrade advisor and it says everything is fine apart from my network card which needs the 'driver'
