Wireless Router: "Local Access Only"

Mar 23, 2008

I had to use my new HP laptop, connecting Belkin Share 5x; 802.11g to Time Warner Cable, to set up my network. After about 15 minutes or when I come back from 'hibernate', etc., I get "Local Access Only". I've replugged the modem power cord but most times the repair message is to connect a cable to the adapter.... which defeats the purpose of a laptop. Belkin was installed first with and then without using an Ethernet cable; I get local access only message both ways. And perfect Internet when I do plug in the cable. I've spent hours on the phone with Belkin Support; no luck. My XP PC, using Linksys adapter, picks up the connection beautifully. What to do?

Local Access Only: Connect To The Wireless Router (Linksys WRT110) Via Ethernet Cable

Mar 23, 2010

I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.

-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access.
-firewall is off.
-ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL.
-I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online.
-I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.

Wireless: Local Access Only

Apr 29, 2009

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW370j which has worked flawlessly for the past 3 months I owned it. But now, I wake up and get ready to do some work on it, and the damn thing is local access only. I skyped with my dad last night, so I know it was working perfect before I went to bed. However, I believe I left it on so It might have updated something I am unaware of. I did a system restore back to 3 days ago. I have another laptop, a toshiba, and it can connect fine. I have hard reset my router (which usually fixes the connection problems). And I have also restarted the laptop, disabled and reenabled the wireless network connection, turned off and on the wlan switch on front. On my router their is no security set. Its just boot up and go. I sure also add that the Sony is Vista Home Premium 64bit, while the toshiba is Widows Vista Home Basic 32bit.

Wireless Access Point, Can Add Second Router?

Dec 14, 2008

I have a small home network, wired right now. I would like to add a wireless access point for near future laptops. Can I add a second router that is wireless to my wired network with having to load router software on a second computer. Is this even possible. My network consists of my PC, HP M8300f desktop PC as home base/client and cable modem with linksys wired router, BEFSR41 connected to a dell 2400 desktop. I am wanting to add a linksys wireless router WRT54G some where in the living room for and access point. Do I have to load the software on the Dell PC or can I just plug in router to wall socket and connect wirelessly that way.

Wireless Router: No Access Gives "error".

Oct 9, 2009

I have a Dell XPS laptop loaded with Vista. Here's my problem. I have a wireless router that transmits a very strong signal. It shows the computer is receiving the signal from the router however it won't let me access the internet and gives me an "error". I've called my service provider (Time Warner) and all is fine from their end. I have a Netgear router and it is working fine. My work computer is also a Dell that is loaded with XP. My work computer and everyone who comes to my house with a wireless computer doesn't have any problems at all connecting to the internet. It almost seems like my XPS is not set up correctly but my XPS will connect with other wireless signals from my neighbor's routers.

I recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).

Wireless Router Does B/g Connect

Apr 9, 2008

here is the setup, I have a Laptop with a wired 10/100/100 jack and a wireless card built in A/B/G. I have a wireless router at home that does B/G, I connect to it at G. The wireless router also has 5 10/100 ports on the back. From the wireless router I go into a cable modem, pretty standard setup so far, here is where gets fun. I have the option of "bundling" my download speeds and upload speeds with the installation of a 2nd cable modem. What I am unsure opf is how exactle this setup would work. Going to attach a pic and see what you all have in the way of advice: Basically, the 2 connections from the cable modems are 15down and 2up each, my cable company will allow me to combine the connections (they will set it up on their end) so I have 30down 4up, what I dont know is how top do it on MY end. I am attaching a word doc with a drawing to explain better. I am running Vista64 Ultimate w/sp1

Won't Connect To Linksys Wireless-g Router

My family and i just got a new dell laptop with vista on it, but it will not connect to our home internet connection. We use a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, Model WRT54G. I've tried various guides and searched high and low for an answer. When I try to connect to the network Linksys, It says
'Windows cannot connect to Linksys'.
Then, it says
"Make sure your computer is in range of "linksys" and that the network settings match the wireless router or access point settings"
All our other computers work fine with it, A laptop running XP, Our Home computer running XP, and even an iphone.
I'm not sure what that diagnostic is supposed to mean and I'm not familiar with vista at all.

Netgear WGRv6 Wireless Router

Dec 2, 2008

I have had this router for some time - worked fine with Xp64 - now I've upgraded to Vista 64 Home, it will occasionally lock up. By that I mean that I can sometimes still see my local network, but I lose internect connectivity. I seems to be at random. But the impression I get is that it is something on the wireless network that is causing it as it seems to be worse if I connect my works laptop to the internet via a wireless VPN connection.

I also have a WB NAS drive connected (Soon to be ditched due to problems with it corrupting files and being extremely slow to extract data) and a Wii (Wireless). Or can any recommend a ADSL wireless router that works well with Vista? (I have to run the PC and NAS drive with static IP addresses due to the time it takes for the network to connect if I use DHCP)

D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Router Crashes

May 28, 2008

I have a 16.000kbps ADSL2+ broadband, and a D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Router connected to it. Currently I have a laptop, a stationary computer, and my xbox 360 connected to it. All wireless. Everything is fine when I have only one connected at a time, but when I connect my stationary and my xbox 360 at the same time, it seems like I get a crash somewhere now and then, and I cant figure out what it is. When I logon COD4 to play, I get 'connection interrupted' every.. ~15-30min, wich causes me to go offline. When I download anything on my stationary, it seems like the internet connection 'goes down', or 'hangs' for ~20secs. That would be the same problem on both systems (x360 and PC). I have tried to lock an IP to their MAC-Adresses, so an IP-Conflict could not be possible. I have UPNP enabled, and all ports etc. Still this is happening.

No Connectivity When Connecting To A Wireless Router

Mar 23, 2008

I have an intermittent problem that is driving me nuts! I am using Vista Home Premium on a Dell 1501 with an internal wireless card. My router is on a pc running XP. The router is a linksys WRT55AG running 802.11g. All of my other computers have no problem connecting to the router through wireless. The vista machine goes into this fit 80% of the time where I get the infamous yellow triangle telling me I have limited or no connectivity and I can not access internet (Local only - whatever that means). I went to Microsoft help page and found out that the power saving feature messes things up and since then I am running at high power so that's not the issue. It does not matter where the computer is. Even if I am sitting right next to the router, it still does not connect to internet. 20% of the time it starts right up (like right now) and I get the little earth thing on the taskbar and I can get to the internet. Dell of couse said it is a Vista issue and I am sure Microsoft will tell me it is a Dell issue. There is nothing wrong with the wireless card and I have run all kinds of diagnostics on it and it has the latest driver.
