Internet, LAN And Wireless Goes To Local Only Mode
Feb 16, 2009
It's the Internet, LAN and wireless. Problem is that after a time period X they just all want to go to "local only mode". Just to mention, I have three Vista laptops, which all are doing the same thing, and my only XP laptop works just fine. So it's pretty much narrowed down to Vista laptops...No matter what Microsoft wants to say.
So what happens? -> I have a private network (wireless is encrypted with WPA/PSK and the password is correct...), it connects allright and the mode is "Local and Internet". After some time, it can be two minutes or one hour, it just suddenly goes to "local only mode" and stays that way.........
A Lot of Vista users have trouble connecting to the internet over wireless. The result being a state known as local only where the PC has a connection to the Wlan but no internet. One of many cures to be found on the Internet, which seems to work, is to disable IPv6. How to disable IPv6
I just bought a new Dell laptop that is installed with Windows Vista. I am not able to connect my wireless to internet. It says access local only. I have no problem when connecting using cable direct to Boradband. Never had this problem with old laptop using XP.
I am currently researching into upgrading the telecommunications scene in our house satrting with replacing my current router which is driving me insane. The signal strenght is totally erratic & it often wont reconnect to the internet after going into standby mode.
Belkin : Wireless G+ Modem Router
I am totally noob when it comes to wireless, do all routers produce basically the same strength signal? Are some more long range than others?
The computer starts up with wireless networking and wireless connection working fine. At some seemingly random time (usually a few hours) my connection status will go from "local and internet" to "limited connectivity" with the little yellow warning icon. I try disconnecting and reconnecting, it can't connect. I turn off and on the adapter using the on-keyboard button, it says it is going "off" then "on" but connection is not restored. "Repair" attempts fail immediately, with no explanation given, it just says it can't connect.
I can't ping any IP address or websites, I get "host unreachable" messages. The only solution is to restart, at which point everything is fine. Note that in this time when the wireless is not functioning, I can plug in an ethernet cable and be connected to the internet just fine. I did IPCONFIG/ALL in the connected state, and the 'after' disconnected state. In the connected state: Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:........
Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2. Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus. Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i) Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4 Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router. I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW370j which has worked flawlessly for the past 3 months I owned it. But now, I wake up and get ready to do some work on it, and the damn thing is local access only. I skyped with my dad last night, so I know it was working perfect before I went to bed. However, I believe I left it on so It might have updated something I am unaware of. I did a system restore back to 3 days ago. I have another laptop, a toshiba, and it can connect fine. I have hard reset my router (which usually fixes the connection problems). And I have also restarted the laptop, disabled and reenabled the wireless network connection, turned off and on the wlan switch on front. On my router their is no security set. Its just boot up and go. I sure also add that the Sony is Vista Home Premium 64bit, while the toshiba is Widows Vista Home Basic 32bit.
We have four computers One desktop and three notebooks. The desktop and two notebooks use XP Home Service Pack 3, the other notebook is two weeks old and has Vista Home Basic installed SP1. The desktop has a NIC and is connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router connected to a Speed Stream 4100 DSL modem.
All three XP machines have no networking problems - only the Acer Aspire 5515 with Vista Home basic which has an Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter. The problems are 1)does not connect to the internet [local only], on powering up and 2)coming out of sleep mode or 3)drops the internet connection randomly.
I tried unchecking the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology choices. OK, restart. Also tried CMD prompt: netsh Winsock reset. Neither of those seemed to solve the problem and the QoS Packet Scheduler, the Internet Protocol Version 6, and both Link Layer Topology check boxes are checked and back as they were.
I installed Vista Business on a new computer (Asus P2) and it keeps loosing the internet connection intermittently. Local access always works. In the network are 3 computers, 2 Vista desktops, 1 XP Home which acts as a file and printer server and a Draytek router behind a cable modem. The 2 Vista PC's are new and both have the same problem. When the XP machine was the desktop PC this problem never occurred, and it still doesn't as the XP machine always has a live internet connection (the cable provider is wonderfully reliable). The machines are connected via a wired 100Mbps network...............
I just moved into a new apartment where there is already wireless internet set up in my office. I don't actually want/need wireless so I'm trying to connect to the wireless router (Linksys WRT110) via ethernet cable, but am getting "local access only". The other two computers that are connected to this router are connected to the internet and thus are NOT having this problem.
-I can not connect directly to the modem because then everyone else loses their internet access. -firewall is off. -ping test doesn't work, I can't ping anything since I can't get online AT ALL. -I know my cable works; if I connect it to the modem, I can get online. -I know the router works, because everyone else can get online. I tried to get help from Linksys, but they want $30 for one-time help, which, IMO, is BS.
I am running vista on a hp laptop. I can connect to the local network, but can't connect to the login website. I have tried several fixes including disableing ipv6. I feel the issue is when Im attempting to connect to this wifii public unsecure network Im unable to receive the redirect to the terms of use page. in the network sharing center it shows me conected to the local network but not to the internet.
I have Vista home basic 32bit And I am connected to DSL via ethernet (wired). About a week ago I stared having a issue that my browsers would stop working(both firefox and internet explorer)I would get the typical error saying the connection has been reset. My modem was showing that I am connected tho.
At the same time my AIM messenger was working fine I was still connected and able to send and receive messages.I tried to reset my modem that didn't work.So I restarted my pc and that seemed to fix it. This has continued to happen daily now usually around the same timeframe too.
I have scanned my pc with avast, super anti spyware and malwarebytes and they haven't found anything wrong.I tried disabling my firewal (pc tools firewalls plus) that didn't work.I read that zonealarm could cause this issue and i had it in the past but it's been long uninstalled. The last thing i tried was i disabled avast web scanner and i reset the TCP/IP Winsock. And again it didn't work.
I have a Samsung Vista Home laptop that has connected to the internet without problem for over 2 years. It cannot connect now, either wirelessly or wired, but two other computers running XP can connect both wired and wireless. The connection shows as 'local access only'. I have tried so many things, and have come to a grinding halt
Is there a program that can throttle local internet connections (local as in your own computer) that works on, or more preferably, optimized for vista x64? I already looked into netlimiter, I was wondering if there is anything else that I missed that you guys are using.
I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error. 2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine. 3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work. 4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work. 5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work. 6) Disabling TCP/IPv6
When I've downloaded files from the net, I choose a directory to save the file but then get error message saying that I don't have permission to save files in that location and to ask the Administrator for permission. I am the Administrator and I have no other users. All the files downloaded go to the Local temp file since I don't have permission.
I had to use my new HP laptop, connecting Belkin Share 5x; 802.11g to Time Warner Cable, to set up my network. After about 15 minutes or when I come back from 'hibernate', etc., I get "Local Access Only". I've replugged the modem power cord but most times the repair message is to connect a cable to the adapter.... which defeats the purpose of a laptop. Belkin was installed first with and then without using an Ethernet cable; I get local access only message both ways. And perfect Internet when I do plug in the cable. I've spent hours on the phone with Belkin Support; no luck. My XP PC, using Linksys adapter, picks up the connection beautifully. What to do?
The internet protected mode that shows on the bottom right side of a web page show's that it is off but the check marks are in place in the box's that you turn it on with and i have checked all the settings that i know to check to have it set to ON but it shows off. i have vista 64 bit on a HP desk top e9120y with IE8.
Task Scheduler (Local) Upon opening TS..a error box populates and no (Local) data. Upon Xing close the error box...data populates.. Message in error box..The Task Image is Corrupt or has been Tampered with.mcupdate...I ran sfc..nothing reported
I'm so glad i've found these forums, I just recently got a dell inspiron 530, Windows Vista. I recently did a factory restore on my computer and now everytime i put it in sleep mode, it wakes up after a few seconds without me touching it and I want to prevent it from waking up without my command. Also when I view videos in full screen on the internet, I have these two black bars that appear on the left and right of the screen, how can I get that off?
I wonder if anyone can help me regarding this problem. Incidentally I have read and tried the suggestions on the sticky on sleep mode problems but I feel this does not match my problem.
I have the computer booted and then I can connect to the internet OK when I leave the computer and put it into sleep mode this works OK, however when I return and wake it up I cannot get an Internet or email connection and the only way is to restart the system. Can anybody give me any ideas?
After years of being fine on my Vista machines (we have 2 on the network, hard wired through a router usually.. however now they are connected directly to the modem) that have both either lost their internet connection or after many reboots of the modem, connect to a uselessly slow internet connection. I've reset the router, and then gave up alltogether for the direct line to the modem. Comcast came today, couldn't figure it out.. they replaced the modem and claim the internet is fine from their end.
I did install Comcast's Norton Suite 3 weeks ago, which ran fine until now. I slow started having problems, Tivo Desktop couldn't transfer shows, then wifi connected devices like my iphone would ask over and over again for the password to the network. Then my VNC program stopped connecting to my home computer. Then, ultimately the internet connection was lost. All these things happened a few days after each other. Comcast has told me I am on my own, they don't know what else to do. The kicker is that the internet is good and fast if I boot in SAFE MODE. I uninstalled Norton on one of my desktops, but still slow internet.
So, the tech tells me the problem is with Vista, says there must've been an update that went on both computers that is causing the problem. So I have no clue where to go to from there. I unistalled Norton on the one machine using Windows Uninstall to get rid of it. Is part of it there still? It's so weird that both computers have the identical problem, yet its not the internet connection that is causing it.
I've searched here for this problem, and it seems that others have had it as well. I just got a new PC and it's running Vista. Each time I put it into sleep mode, when I come back, I have no wireless internet. I can either reboot or unplug the wireless receiver, either work, but it's a pain. Repair/diagnose does NOT work. For what it's worth, I had another PC, less than a year old, and it does the exact same thing. I just assumed that the old one was just wierd and my solution was to not put it into sleep. We do have a hard wired one, it does NOT lose connection when in sleep mode. My internet comes back just fine upon unplugging the receiver / replugging it. I have tried the solution I found..by unchecking the 'allow the system to put this device to sleep'..that did not work. the PC's are pretty DISSIMILAR in what they have on them for hardware, which leads me to believe it's a Vista thing. They don't even have the same spyware stuff..
I have this new Gateway all-in-One machine that has built-in wireless and the standard Ethernet connection capabilities. I have an Ethernet cable connected and would like to know:
- How exactly, do I tell how I am connected to the internet (Via Ethernet or via wireless)? I click the connection icon and does not specify exactly how I am connected to the internet, Only that I am connected...
I recently had other problems with my personal notebook but now i have another issue i can't connect to the internet the diagnostics keeps telling me to reset or check and make sure everything is fine but im positive it is ; the other computer and notebook in my household has internet and is working fine.
I've a new laptop with W.Vista and when I try to connect to internet through wireless an error message appear. I read that D-Link DI 514 isn't supported anymore in Vista. Its possible to fix it? To change my wireless router is my last option.
I just received my HP laptop with wireless internet, yet I cannot connect to the internet. I am using a linksys wrt54g version 2 router. I already have a number of computers already connected wirelessly to this router with no issues. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong with this new computer. This is my first computer with Vista, so I'm a bit rusty with the set up.
I recently upgraded my OS from Vista Home to Ultimate (a clean install). It seems as though after I have been using the internet for a while or if I am using too much bandwidth (downloading a few things or have a couple windows open) my wireless stops. I have access to the network - just the actual wireless internet stops. I can't use the diagnose feature by right-clicking as it never has a solution that actually fixes it - I've tried them all. We have several other computers in the house and they don't have problems with it - it also happens when I'm at work as well. When I attach the computer directly to the modem (even while this problem happens) the internet works fine. The only fix is restarting - but that's quite annoying and happening often. I have downloaded the newest drivers for this computer from HP (its a DV9200 CTO pn: EZ345AV) and I can't figure it out.
This morning I started the installation of the vista service pack one. once installed my laptop could not connect to the internet wirelessly anymore, it cannot find any networks. what's going on?

connection drops while i am downloading files or tring to watch a video using flashplayer internet goes "dormant" sometimes if i am extremely lucky it will hold longer then other times. i have no problem surfing the net. just "buffering" videos and downloading files i.e. patching wow or watching videos on myspace,Internet, or anywhere that invovles a flashplayer. its seems to be at random.
