View 4 RepliesI'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
I'm posting this from another laptop using the same router. It seems this is a common problem without any certain resolution. I've tried most of the plentiful suggestions on the web without success. I obviously don't want to flatten the laptop and re-load just to get internet access back.
View 9 Replies View RelatedBefore Installing Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 my wired (crossover cable)lan was working fine. Network identified as private Home network. Settings below with static IP
Vista Ultimate x64
IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
Default Dns 192.168.0.1
Win XP
IP 192.168.0.2.......................
This is still unresolved even though I've tries every suggestion on the
net. It seems people usually give up at this stage and reload Vista. My
original post is now on page 3 so probably won't get read anymore.
It's pointess going to Microsoft - it has been a know problem since
Vista was released, and apparently they have done nothing about it.
I do know it's not the router. I do know it's not the wireless adaptor.
I do know I'm not getting any DNS.

I have a functioning XP network with Zyxel 335 router. 3 wireless and 1 wired
connection. Works OK. Installed a new computer with windows vista wired (old
USB wireless driver didn??t work with Vista). Only local access to
unidentified network. IP-adress 169.... and not 192.168.1.34 which the router
says it should have. When I changed to the same network name all computers
could see each other but later the Vista computer was missing. It??s very
confusing.
What should I do? My son wants to reach the internet from his computer and
we want to share his printer.
I??ve tried support from my ISP and router. ISP wont help -says it??s problem
with Vista..Zyxel says it will be solved in Vista SP1. Does anybody know if
this is the case and when is that released?
I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:
Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.
I have (vista home perimium) my internet connection shows unindentified network,i am not able to connect any wifi connections.but on my friends who are who are using the same wifi connection ,has no problem in the connection.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm aware that this is quite a common issue and i apologize if it's been repeated hundeds of times, but it's driving me crazy. I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have scrolled through pages and pages of posts here and tried to find my solution. I must repost this issue for me. I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............
View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my new laprop with Vista Home Premium I have several network connections for the different locations at home. Beside the wireless internet connection I have a wired and a wireless connection to my local network,, which ends up in a proxy server for the internet connection. My wireless connection directly to the internet (IP=3D192.168.1.51) is correctly identified with the name of my wireless router. The other network connections (IP 10.1.1.x) are identified as "Unidentified network" and declared as "Public". I always have to manually redefine it as "Private" but did not find a possibility to change the name. Is there a way to permanently set the desired values?
I also have a problem that the connection to my XP business desktop breaks down after a while. I have a mapping to a share (c$) which works prefectly for a while but after some time (don't have enough experience yet how long it actually takes) copying files from vista to XP is not possible anymore, while the opposite direction is still OK. I guess it cannot be a fierwall problem, I have turned off the Windows firewall and use a desktop firewall that works OK all the time.
I recently moved my wireless router and cable modem away from my Vista PC. It was always configured wirelessly, as I knew I would have to move it at some point. I left the computer on when I unplugged the router etc. and then set them up downstairs. When I tried to access the network after everything had been set up again, I noticed that Vista thought my home network was an "Unidentified network" but still had my ssid in (___). Only problem was that now my network is "local only". I am connected to the router as local-only, and tried to adjust my router setting via the router page at 192.168.1.1 It was returned as page not found. Is Vista confused? If I was truly conncted to the router and even if internet was not working I should be able to adjust the settings on the router, right?
I can access the internet just fine with all of my other devices in the house, such as Tivo, Ps3 and Windows mobile cellphone. All of these are able to connect to the internet through my router. There are other networks available around me, so I tried to connect to one of those. Same thing, local only. I cannot confirm that internet works on this other network. But I have narrowed it down to a problem with my Vista computer.
I just installed an OEM windows vista home premium onto my computer so that I could take advantage of my 6GB ram. Unfortunately I don't know too much about building systems and I have an internet problem. After I installed the OS, when I plug my computer into my router, I always recieve "unidentified network..limited or no connectivity". I've done everything that the internet company has asked me to do as far as my modem/router is concerned, and Acer wants to charge me a buttload for their help.
Am I missing something simple that I need to do with my 64 bit software? I downloaded the 64 bit drivers for my LAN, audio etc from the acer website but it seems to still do no good. I even downloaded the driver directly from my Lan ethernet controllers brand website. I've been stuck here for days without much help and the wierd thing is that my girlfriend can plug her computer (32 bit vista home premium) right into the router and it connects fine. I'm downloading SP2 now if that makes any difference.
I lost connection thinking it was the laptop i tried switching off the wireless card and deleting teh settings however it did not help. I only realised i had just lost connection completely. Now every time i connect i get unidentified ntework limited connectivity.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................
have 64 bit vista eveything was running fine until 2 days ago my internet connection is stuck on "identifiying network" or it connects to a "unidentified network" this prevents me from logging onto internet. my other computer and xbox have no issues connecting to internet. ive tried to reset local connection, unplug/reset router and modem, disable/enable connection but no luck. im using a linksys wireless b router.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy PC runs Windows Vista and I am on an ADSL plan (for broadband internet). I turn my modem on and off before and after each internet session for security reasons. Recently, my computer seems to connect to two networks - "Public network" (which is the internet gateway) and another "unidentified" network. I don't know how this network came about and this seems to preclude me from using the internet. I am being forced to disable my networks and re-enable them again, after which only the Public Network re-appears. Then, I am able to use the internet as per normal. Is there a way of getting rid of this "unidentified" network? so that I can connect to the intenet seamlessly, as I was able to do before?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista machine and an XP Pro machine. The Vista has 2 NICs, NIC 1 connected to the cable moden and NIC 2 connected to XP using a crossover cable. Vista is set for ICS. Internet works fine on both machines, always. XP can see and access Vista's shared folders, always. Vista cannot see XP. NIC 2 comes up "unidentified network" and is set
"public". I change NIC 2 to "private", then after a brief delay XP becomes visible and accessible. NIC 2 still labeled "unidentified network". On reboot NIC 2 reverts to "public".
Just recently a new icon appeared in the notification area and I can't get rid of it or even find out what it is. If you hover over the icon, there is no pop up message saying what it is. Left and right click don't do anything at all. I've looked in the customise icons section but it is just listed as "<no title>".
The icon looks like two figures in front of a small window, with the windows shield at the front. I've tried to attach a screen shot of it. It's the second one from the left.
It appears shortly after starting up the laptop and then won't go.
I've got an ACER Aspire 5735, running Vista Home Basic.
Is there a way to identify the items in the notification area?
I don't know if this is the right group but a keyword search sent me here. For a long time now I've been getting windows on startup trying to install something that it says is an unidentified device, but on attempt to diagnose and or install I get the following:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)A device attached to the system is not functioning. To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Drive and gives it's value as *ISATAP network adaptor. So I uninstall it and after a restart or two I have to go through it all over again. If I leave device manager window open it shows a lot of activity trying to install this device so it is affecting performance.I don't have any new hardware other than a driver for a midi connection, but this issue predates that.
This seems to indicate that perhaps there is a way to allow identified programs to access the computer. After all, Microsoft Office suite does not trigger the UAC and it read-writes to registry, etc... So, what is available to allow Vista the "Identify" my program as safe, leaving UAC alon.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have uninstalled them, and yet they keep coming back. I can't imagine what they are, as everything on this laptop appears to work. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 7720, running Vista Home Premium x64 and to my surprise the same happens in Win 7
View 4 Replies View RelatedMostly, when I install programs in Vista, there's no problem starting them. In a couple of cases, though, whenever I run the program (whether from the Start menu or by double-clicking a data file), Vista posts a message: "An unidentified program wants to access your computer." It gives the options "Cancel" and "Allow". Well, obviously I want to allow the program; I've just started it! And the programs were installed through a normal installation process. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling those specific programs, but I get the same results. How can I tell Vista to stop asking me and just allow it?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.
I have bought DD a laptop for Christmas and thought I'd get it all set up beforehand. I already have a wireless network here at home, with 2 desktops running xp) and a macbook, they connect via a belkin wireless modem router. Vista however, doesn't even find a network, I get a message saying the network cable is nplugged. Its wireless enabled and the switch is on
