Connected To Network, 'Local Only'

Aug 3, 2009

My laptop is connected to a NetGear router, and has been for over a year with no problems. I went on vacation and used another network for a week and when I came back I can no longer connect to the internet with my home network. I am connected to the network, but it says 'Local Only'. If I disconnect and reconnect again, it will tell me I have an internet connection, but as soon as I try to access a web page with my browser, it drops the connection. I CAN connect via ethernet cable with no problems, and no other computers on the network are having any issues. I've tried resetting the network adapter, uninstalled my antivirus, tried disabling my firewall, updated my wireless network adapter driver.

Windows 7 : Loses Local Resources When Connected To VPN

Oct 11, 2009

When connected to a pptp VPN resources on the local domain are inconsistantly available. Previously with XP they were always available even if connected to a VPN. What has changed?

Printing:
From win 7, I can print to a Lan printer shared on the server (2008) Once connected to a remote VPN (windows 2003 pptp), the print que says "Accessed Denied" when trying to print to the same printer. With XP printing was still possible to the Lan even though connected to a VPN.

Mapped Drives:
Sometime they work, sometimes they don't. If I have a mapped drive to a local file server once connected to the VPN I can't list the contents of drive, or access any of the files.Other times even with a VPN connected I can acess the files. If you access the drive before opening the VPN this seems to help. I thought it may be a DNS issue but I have added the server to my hosts file. The host name resolves correctly even after an "ipconfig /flushdns".

Does windows 7 need to resolve service records on the local AD dns server before passing on credentials? The order of accessing DNS servers is the remote VPN DNS server first and then the local DNS server second. Is this why I can always print to a local printer that I installed using its IP address, whilst connected to a VPN, which then prompted me for credentials. I assume the credentials were stored locally, making them always available no matter what the order of DNS servers were.
Once connected to a VPN why can't Vista/Win7 always print/access local resources?
Connected to the same VPNs XP could always access local recources.

Vista Network Not Connected And Private Network

May 15, 2010

Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I can’t connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no “customise” function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. I’ve tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

Network Can't Connected

Oct 1, 2009

Since i built my computer I have been having fight with other family members over the internet as our router broke and we have to plug right into the modem (only one can connect at a time). Today i purchased a 8 port 10-100mbps network switch (Buying a router is not possible at this time) I connected the modem to the switch, then my computer and then the home computer. When i connected on my computer, everything was fine (I have vista ultimate x64 sp2.)

I then disconnected and connected the home computer (xp Pro sp3) Everything worked fine. Then I came back to mine and tried to connect and after a bit of waiting i got the message "Error 815" and that the server is not responding. When I do the opposite and connect my computer and then try connect the xp computer, I get the message "Error 676 the line is busy." I can browse both the computers files through network as long as I have the other computers password.Does anyone know a solution to my problem so that both computers can be online at the same time e.g. a shared internet connection from vista pc to xp pc or connect to the internet through the other computer and vice versa? P.S Both computers have kaspersky internet security but i tried disabling them and it still didnt work

Can't Connected Network

Mar 10, 2009

Windows Vista Business with SP1 I have two NICs in my Vista Business SP1 machine - one NIC is connected to our corporate network, the other NIC is connected to a private network. Both networks are using DHCP, with the private network obtaining it's address from a LinkSys WRT54G (not being used as a router - just a switch with DHCP). The problem I having is that both networks end up with a entry in the routing table for 0.0.0.0 with the same metric. So anytime I try to access the internet (which should always go through the corporate network), I have a 50-50 chance of actually succeeding.

Connected To Network, But Not Internet

Apr 22, 2008

I'm having problems with my home network. I find that I will be on the internet wirelessly with no problems, then all of a sudden I lose internet connection, but I still remain connected to the home network. I have tried disconnecting and re-connecting to the network, this usually doesn't help. Occasionally that will help, but then a couple minutes later, I have the same problem. I have tried running the diagnosis within the Network and Sharing Center. Sometimes it will tell me that it doesn't detect a problem and sometimes it will detect a problem. Then I try to reset the wireless adapter "Wireless Network Connection" and it will appear to have fixed it, and when I try to re-load the page it times out and then I lose internet connection again. The only thing that I have found that fixes the problem is to recycle power to the modem. (Pain in the ass!)

The modem is connected to a desktop computer (I don't remember what it's running, but I know it's a version of XP) and there are multiple laptops within the house that connect to it wirelessly and I'm the only one running Vista and the only one having problems. The modem isn't very old, so I'm not thinking that it's the modem, so because I'm the only one having problems, I'm assuming it's a Vista thing.

Network Icon Says Not Connected But I Am

Jun 16, 2008

I have a fairly new dell laptop inspiron 1720 with wireless internet connection. A couple of days ago I noticed the little network icon on the bottom right of the task bar had a strange little blue blob on it. If I hold the mouse over it, it says 'you are currently not connected to any networks'. If I right click and then click 'connect to a network', that box shows that I am indeed connected and to the proper network. When I first start my laptop the small network icon says that I am connected to the proper network but 'local access only', and after a few seconds that goes away and I get the above message.

I tried going into the 'connect to a network' box and disconnecting the proper network, then reconnecting but that did nothing. I am able to access the internet, my email and everything else. I did nothing new to my laptop, no programs or anything. This is just anannoying little bug that I would like to fix if anyone knows how.

Connected To A Network At 100% But No Internet?

Mar 6, 2010

So I am actually posting on this forum for my g/f. She has a Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista Home Premium x32 on a 64 AMD Athlon processor with 2gb of memory. The issue that we have been encountering is simply this. Her internet just decided it didn't want to work anymore. She was checking her e-mail when the web page said that the internet connection was no longer available. We are currently at school so I told her to take it to "Computing Services" but they said that there was nothing they could do on their end because the computer was connecting to the server just fine. When I look at it I was confused myself. According to windows the internet connection is at an excellent signal strength and the networking map goes all the way green to the glob. So the internet should work. I look over the other forums to see if anyone else had this issue and tried their fixes as well. (i.e. turned off TCP/IPv6 and even got rid of AVG and turned off the firewall) nothing seems to be working. Also to top it off plugging it in hardwire doesn't work either. So does anyone have any suggestions or is it safe to assume that her network card is dead?

Connected To Network,, XP Pcs Can No Longer See Each Other

Apr 5, 2008

I'm having some issues with file sharing in a network with 2 Windows XP pc's and 1 Vista 32bit. One of the XP pcs has a McAfee firewall and the other XP and Vista have standard Windows Firewall. Since I updated to SP1, I am no longer able to access files on the XP pc's or vice versa (accessing Vista files on XP pcs). Vista can detect both computers but when connecting to them. Same thing on the XP pcs.. "The Network path was not found" when trying to access \VISTAPUBLIC.

Tried to reset firewall settings on Vista (read that somewhere) but it didn't help. The weird thing also is that. when Vista is connected to the network, the XP pcs can no longer see each other anymore. When I check the workgroup nothing shows up except the machine itself. When Vista is disconnected, the other XP machine shows up again. Both XP pc's have the LLTD installed (although that doesnt really matter in this case). There aint that much information, I'm desperately trying to get files transferred to my Vista laptop. I could use bluetooth but when the filesize is over 5 gb. well you get the point.

Ultimate - Local Only Network

Jan 23, 2008

I have two computers at home, both using XP, both directly connected to the speedtouch modem/router (it only has two network slots). My friend just bought a notebook, an Asus F3K. Since he only got Vista drivers with it, we installed Vista Ultimate. Everything went as planned, and it all works ... but the network connection. At first I connected it using my first computer's cable. It says "local only". Now the fun part ... I went to my second computer and connected the laptop to the network using this computer's cable ... and it suddenly worked fine.

But, even though ... both XP computers run fine and have no network problems, as long as I don't use one of their cables to connect the laptop. It's an Asus F3K as I said, using a RealTek network card. I unticked the IPv6 in the network connection properties, and I followed the "additional information". My friend also tried to connect it at home, but he got "local only" as well. We both use the same internet provider and have the same modem/router. Also, when Vista starts solving the problem it identifies the modem/router to be the problem ... but both modems work fine if we use XP. Using XP on my friend's computer is not an option at the time, since all of the supplied drivers and applications are Vista only.

At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

umm well for about 6 months now i've had my laptop (with vista premium 32 bit) and i was connected wirelessly to my home network with no problems. Then all of a sudden a few days ago (13th or 14th to be precise) at midnight i no longer had any internet connectivity. I was browsing the internet, watching a video, from a little before midnight till 12:30 and when i was done i noticed the loss of internet connection.

When i try to troubleshoot the problem i get the "cannot communicate with primary DNS server". I CAN access my home network (sent a file to our desktop computer's shared folder and recieved it just fine) but my internet connection is down. When i check in Network and Sharing Center i see the line from my PC to the home network in green but the one from home to internet is Xed. On the other hand, my brother (who also has vista on his laptop) did not get this problem and any other periferal accessing the router (wii, xbox360, DS) can all access the internet.............

It's pointess going to Microsoft - it has been a know problem since

Vista was released, and apparently they have done nothing about it.

Unidentified Network / Access: Local Only

I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:

Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.

What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.

Local System Network Restricted

Apr 3, 2010

Using Vista Ultimate 64:

A month ago I started to notice that when I went to bed at night on a Monday night the computer was fine and connected to the internet. When I got up Tuesday morning the first thing that I noticed was that the CPU usage, via the CPU usage gadget on the desktop, 4 core, was running up and down between 27% and 59%. While running it would allow me to do vitually nothing. The next thing I noticed was that I was disconnected from the WAN & Lan and it would not allow me to neither connect or troubleshoot. In order to get my computer back I had to do a restart. Two weeks ago the problem changed from a Tuesday morning to Saturday morning but the identical scenerio. What I was able to identify is that the problem is from, via services, "Svchostexe", of which there are 15 of them running. The indivdual services showed: WSCSVC; IMHosts; Event Log; DHCP; AudioSRV:
In order to retake control I had to do the restart but this time when it restarted it showed that I was connected to an unidentified network. Reset the modem/router and all was fine. This Saturday morning, same thing with the with the cpu usage meter and internet connection dropped. Under Services it was showing AVgaurd.exe 32 - Antivirus on Access Service and the svchost.exe - System host Process for windows service; when I open subprocess services it is showing 11 of them: wudfsvc; wdi system host; Ursms; PCA Svc; Netman; Irman; IPBus Enum; hidserv; EMDmgmt; AudioEndPointBuilder; Thes are showing "Local System Network Restricted" next to them all the while when "Running" , evan after a restart these are still running so I am presuming that they are legit.I admit by some of the names of the services it looks like a rootkit or zombie programs but everything that I throw at the C drive comes back negative including Eset and Fsecure. I have no services scheduled to run at this time of the day. This time a restart brought everything up fine. Are these legit MS OS programs; Don't know that is why I am asking as to which direction to go.While my computer is showing disconnect from the network the router light is still blinking indicating activaty. Daughters computer running XP and running thru the same router/modem is fine.

Local Only Network, Cannot Ping The DNS Servers

Jul 29, 2009

I really don't like Vista and have had nothing but trouble getting it connected. I tried connecting it wirelessly to my AirPort wireless and it would connect and could see everything on the network including the gateway, but would go no further.

I then tried a wired connection using all the same numbers (except the last one) that I have on my other desktops at home (3 XPs and 1 2000). Again, it sees the local network fine but will not go out the gateway. Cannot ping the DNS servers. I know it isn't the wire. I plug it directly back in my computer and it works fine. The route print looks fine (except for all the On-links under the Gateway). I tried uninstalling the Norton Internet Security to see if that was a problem and making sure the Microsoft Firewall was off. Still can't get out of the local network. I never had this kind of problem with my XPs.

Local Network Connection Can't Work

Jan 22, 2008

I've searched everywhere looking for the fix to the "Local Only" network problem. I've had it a couple days and can't find why I can't get through to the internet. I have disabled IPv6 and tried static ip which I don't think works with my router and some registry fixes and cmd commands. I'm connected through Ethernet wire so it's not a wireless thing. I don't know if I should switch back to XP Pro or maybe buy a new network card. .....The first is if I set my ip static and the second without it. It seems that if I don't set my ip static then it does not find the router and only finds unidentified network while if I set my ip static it does but I don't believe my router works with setting static ip from the computer. I can also see the other computers linked into my router but just can't access the internet making me believe it is something with the compatibility with the router and Vista. Okay here it is, this is all without IPv6.

Sp1 Disabled Local Network Connection

Mar 31, 2008

I installed sp1 last night and this morning my internet was gone, the network controller on my machine couldn't find any connections, though the control panel insists the device and the driver are working correctly. I just uninstalled sp1 and got back my connection. I'd done the install hoping it would fix a problem that just started happening: Vista no longer recognizes software CD. Up until a few weeks ago, if I inserted a CD containing software (e.g. adobe CS2), the autoplay brought up the start menu. It not only no longer brings up the start menu, but when I click on the cd/dvd drive in explorer, it asks me how I want to format it. Nero's info tool reads and determines that the disc contains the software I want to install, but vista can't get to it. The only plus side of sp1 was that it correctly reports how much RAM I have installed, instead of 2.93 as it did prior to sp1. Any idea how to install software now that Vista no longer recognizes software media?

Slow Printing On Network And Local Printer In

Jul 2, 2008

I originally posted this 6-24 on only the Vista Printer_fax_scan NG with no response. Multiposted now to broaden the range of people seeing the post. Really need assistance. TIA.

I have a laptop (new HP) with Vista Home Premium SP1 preinstalled, 3 GB RAM,250GB HDD, AMD Turion 64 processor. Using Zone Alarm free as firewall and AVG 8 free as antivirus. Know that firewall is not issue since have full access to printers (can ping the network connected printers) and all other networked computers without problem. I understand that AVG has had a printing issue in the past but I totally turned off AVG by uninstalling itand this did not clear the issue with printing.

Out of the box I have connected the new laptop to the following printers using the latest drivers available from the manufacturers or using Vista's built in if the drivers aren't available from manufacturer's web site.

The following are connected through the home network via wireless and work flawlessly with 3 laptops running XP Pro (2) and XP Home (1).HP 2200DN - B & W Laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch) OKIDATA 5150 - Color laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch)Epson 1280 (connected through a Sony XP computer share) Epson R260 (also connected through the Sony XP computer)

The last printer is a Canon BJC80 which is connected via a USB to Parallel printer cable (Belkin) which works great with no delay on any of the laptops running XP.
