SP2 Wont Install And Recovery Not Work

Jul 25, 2009

I am really frustrated. I installed SP2 on my 32 bit Vista Ultimate and it failed on stage 3 of 3 at 100% and rewound itself and rebooted. I then tried my 64 bit system and it installed fine. Tried my 32bit system again and it failed so bad I had to restore C from a backup. Even a recovery would not work. Then did searches as to why this may be happening and tried all the bits advised. Ran the SFC and it reported errors and said it fixed them, ran it again and it found no errors, did the rearm thing even though I did not use any betas and my version is activated, ran the SP2 readyness and it reports no errors, have no disk management software installed so that is not the issue but everytime after it gets to stage 3 of 3, 100% it sits there for ages spinning the disk and then fails and reverts the changes.

Have used the online update and also the standalone update and that reports an E_FAIL (0x80004005). The log file that is produced is huge and gives so much information you can't make head nor tail out of it. I am certainly not taking MS's option and doing a complete reinstall as then I would have to reinstall all of my software and bother heaps of companies for activations again.

Sony Vaio Recovery CD Can't Work

Feb 13, 2010

I'm having a difficult time restoring my computer to its factory settings. I already backed up most of my important information on a # of DVD discs. I just can't get Windows Vista (32) to re-install. I tried pressing F-10 when the computer starts and Launch the Vaio Recovery. It went through most of the reset but then the screen just goes blank for a very long time and I'm sure its frozen there. The computer I am trying to reset to factory settings is a Sony Vaio Desktop VGC-LT18E, the model it says on the back of the computer is a PCG-281L. I never made the recovery discs. Is there any other way to get these discs without ordering them through SONY? Online versions? Etc..?

Network Connection Running Fine Ics Cannot Work

Mar 28, 2008

Ive just had broadband connected to my house. Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.

The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.

Creating Recovery Disk Work On SATA Drives?

Mar 5, 2009

I am trying to create a recovery disk set that will allow me to image and restore my hard drive, however my last attempt using BARTPE and Driveimaxe xml failed. I was able to backup my hard disk but when i went to restore my partition, I got a bsod. I also tried Acronis home 11 recovery media and it seemed to stall half way through the restore process, backup process wass the same as before. The only way to restore my disk parition is to remove my drive and conect it to an external USB caddy and no problems occur other than it is a little slow and time consuming.

User Acct Running Manually Doesn't Work

Mar 4, 2010

I have a windows Vista machine at home and I got one of those viruses that imitate the MS virus scanning tool. I logged off my acct and ran the malware tool I have and the virus scanner and cleaned everything up. But when I logged back into my user acct I could not open any icons or run any programs it seems that they are not recognizing the .exe files as valid. I get the error saying there is no program associated with this shortcut. But even when I try to run it manually it doesn't work. I can go into my other user acct and run all the programs fine. So my question is if I can't fix my user acct what do I need to do to create a new one but duplicate what I have now? I'm especially concerned about my email files, contacts etc. I can easily move my important personal files over I'm just really concerned about the mail and other programs I run now. Let me know if you need more info. BTW I do not have a valid restore point to work with. I have since created one in case I mess something else up while I try to fix this problem.

Control Panel Home View Running Admin Did Not Work

Jan 1, 2010

I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject: I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.

I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

Drivers For IPX To Work On Vista, Didn't Work

Jul 1, 2008

I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...

So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).

Recovery Disc

May 5, 2008

After my PC was burned out by lightening through my Broadband connection I
received a new PC from my insurers with Win.Vista Business, but I did not
received (and will not) the Windows Installation CD.

Whilst setting up the new PC with various matters an invitation appeared for
me to make a Windows Recovery disc, but I was too busy with other matters to
do it there and then, so thinking that this invitation will appear again I
cancelled it.

It is now some weeks and the invitation has not reappeared. Which way can I
make the Recovery Disc in case of a crash?

Backup And Recovery

HP Recovery Manager

Dec 26, 2008

Quote: If you have a HP computer, then HP has it's own version of System Restore installed called HP Recovery Manager. You can uninstall this in Programs and Features.
I ran across this statement in Tutorials.

It needs some clarifications:

In Pavillion and Presario notebooks, HP Rec Mgr does more than just System restore. And btw, HP does not have its own version of SR. It runs Windows' version.

HP Rec Mgr has other functions: Re-install original software programs and hardware drivers and complete System Recovery restoring the original hard disk factory template. It can be utilized to create a set of recovery discs.

In HP Business notebook, Rec Mgr does not re-install software progs and drivers but does the others listed in Pavilion/Presario models.

I don't think HP Recovery Manager should be uninstalled. Or if perchance, he meant uninstalling System Restore, be aware that HP Rec Mgr will be unable to system restore on its own if Windows SR is unstalled or disabled.

Recovery Drive Gone

Feb 14, 2010

After some major problems with my system, I had to perform a complete reinstall of Vista. The folks from Dell talked me through it. But now, in my My Computer window, where it used to show my 2 hard drives plus the Recovery Drive, it no longer shows the Recovery Drive. I was relatively sure that space was partitioned off of my C drive, but it's not showing up. there's a possibility that a technician hid it while remotely accessing my system. Is there a way for me to check?

if there is no Recovery Drive, how much should I worry (it sure didn't help me LAST time the computer needed restoring)? I am planning to get an offsite backup a la Carbonite or an external drive for backups soon. For all I know, that makes the Recovery Drive a moot point anyway, but I'm not sure.

Recovery Partion (D:) 1.99 GB?

Oct 20, 2008

I have a Latitude D830 with Vista Business 32bit at home and a Optiplex 745 at work with Vista Business 32bit. Both machines show a second partition called Recovery (D. This partition on both machines is 1.99 GB. I have talked to Dell about this partition but could not get a satisfactory answer. One Dell person I talked to said that the partition was created by Vista not Dell, which made me laugh. I then quit talking to that guy because he obviously did not know what he was talking about.

I figure there must be some reason for it if they bother to put it there. Does anyone know what it is for? Currently the Optiplex shows 1.41 GB free, not sure about the D830 but it is about the same. I know Dell has 10 GB recovery partitions that contain a ghost image so one could restore the computer back to an out of the box setup in a matter of minutes rather than using the cds/dvds to reload windows.

His computer is VERY slow. When I start IE6 it is about 6 minutes before it will open on the screen. I am thinking more RAM so I ordered 1GB more. If that doesn't help can I make a complete install of Windows XP from a disk I received with another computer?

OEM Recovery Discs

Apr 13, 2009

There is a recovery disk (a disk image) you can make yourself by using TrueImage or some other such program. Then there are recovery disks that come with a new computer. Which are you talking about?" I'd like to state to Mr. Urban emphatically that I've had Acronis for years. I've helped on their forums. Many people can't recover with the disc Acronis makes.

When I'm trying to fix a Microsoft Windows Operating System, in Vista or any build of Windows 7, I prefer to use the tools that Microsoft has made rather than Acronis. I'm going to be blunt here. Microsoft pays their engineers far more than Acronis will ever dream of paying theirs and there is a damn good reason. Microsoft's engineers have considerably more education, training, imagination, and competence than Acronis' personnel, and frankly Acronis backups (the .tibs) and their Recovery Disc often results in failure............................
