CD/DVD Drive Doesn't Working
Dec 2, 2008I posted this a couple of months back: I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 and my DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. I tried it with various CDs and DVDs and it never detects anything. So I went to the Device Manager and this is what it says: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA cannot start (Code 10)." But while the solution kind of worked, it's still not playing the DVDs everytime. First, it doesn't always eject the disc. The only way I can ALWAYS get it out is during restart, or using a paperclip. Second, even if I take the disc out, the computer still tells me it's there (it displays the disc name too...). And worst of all, if the disc is in, it displays the disc name and I click on it, it doesn't load anything most of the time. Unless I restart it, take the disc out at that time and then put it in (and that's not guaranteed to work either).

Jun 3, 2008I have a new Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 with Windows Vista Ultimate. Vista's intrinsic cd burning capability does not appear to be working. I place a new cd-r disc in my cd/dvd drive, but no messages pop-up ( such as "Burn files to data disc." ). Additionally, the cd-r is not recognized by Nero StartSmart ( it says "Data disc burning > Data Burning > Please insert a writable disc." ) How can I diagnose this problem ?

It is recommended that you defragment now." When I click on "Defragment now..." it spins again for about 5 minutes and repeats the same message. This repeats each time.

Jan 26, 2010I currently have a SATA drive in my desktop. I desire to add a second SATA drive to increase storage space. In reading about the drives many places speak of the need for special SATA cables. I have not pulled the case yet on my computer but, with older computers, there have always been extra connectors on the ribbon and power cable to connect to additional drives. My basic question is if I purchase a "bare" drive, do I need some sort of cables to connect it as a second drive in my computer??

Nov 6, 2009I have an HP Pavillion a1473w that I installed a new WD 320 drive in a few weeks ago. This a second internal drive just for data. Been working fine until tonight when it just vanished. It shows up in bios but not in explorer (My Computer) or in Device Manager.When installed I initialized it as 1 partition and formatted it. Worked fine.I don't care about the data, just want my drive back.

Doesn't show in drive management either. Tried new data cable (SATA) and reseated power cables. Even removed one of the DVD drives thinking it might be a power problem.Also the computer takes about twice as long to boot.Don't have another computer to try it in (my Mac is IDE).Using Vista Home Premium. All updates.

Mar 8, 2009I have vista home 32 bit on a laptop and a desktop I have two Kodax printers one on my desktop one on my wifes desktop. I have them both shared however I can not get my laptop to conect to either one I see the printers on the network but every time I tell them to add I get a message telling me I typed the name wrong I didn't type a name I chose a printer from the list. I allso have the same problem trying to connect my desktop to my wifes printer. I have spent hours on the phone with HP and they couldnot resolve the problem.

May 15, 2009When I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. How can I restore this option so that I have a Sound Icon in my Taskbar again, and are the other two features--Network and Power, a problem being that they too are grayed out?

1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"

Jun 17, 2009Running Vista Home Premium on Compaq Presario notebook. This is my first Vista machine and I find its inability to do a "proper" search a stunning shortcoming. Or am I missing some secret setting? Scenario- I want to do a search of my entire hard drive for a file. I only know the extension so I enter .snf and the results are 1 file found. Wrong!First of all, the results don't show me the complete path to the file.
Instead of displaying C:UsersownerDocuments, it displays C:Usersowner. That's it. I either have to flail around and manually check all the owner folders or right click and look at the file's properties. Why won't Vista display the FULL path to the file? Secondly, and this is really disappointing, is that I KNOW there are at least 70 more .snf files on my C drive that Vista apparently can't locate! I never had this search problem with XP. You ask XP and it tells all. Simple. So what gives with Vista? Is there some way to make Vista do a COMPLETE search and display ALL found files with FULL PATHS?

Setup Doesn't Run On My Win 7 Dvd
Oct 29, 2009I wish to UPGRADE (not clean install) my vista ultimate to win 7 ultimate.I put the win 7 (full version) DVD in my computer, setup ran and told me to remove Kaspersky anti-virus.I removed Kaspersky anti-virus and did the requested re-boot.
Now when I put the win 7 DVD in, setup does not run. When I try to double click on the DVD drive in explorer I get a readme text file and that's all.Trying to run: d:setup.exe in the run command on the start menu and at a command prompt does not work either.
I can boot from the DVD but that is only for a clean install, which I don't want to do.
Doesn't Mention If It Has SP1 Or Not
May 11, 2008I bought my computer a few weeks ago and I can't find the information anywhere. It just says I'm running Home Premium but doesn't mention if it has SP1 or not. Windows updates haven't said it needs downloading so does this mean it already has SP1? Is there a way to find out?

I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. When I put a CD in the drive the light will come on like it's reading but then goes off and it does nothing.

Mar 23, 2008I just bought a Hp 8300 with the Windows media center running Vista. If I try and watch the TV, it will pause and need to restart the computer to use the computer. It just locks up. Hp Tech support had me install new drivers, then they had me do the reinstall to original settings.. It worked until I tried to record, then it locked up again and the TV doesn't work again. It will lock up after watching the TV about 15 seconds. I returned the computer and got another one, it does the same thing, Tech support told me I had a bad tuner (on 2 computers?) they sent me a new tuner, that didn't work. Then they said I needed to reinstall the factory settings from the disk, they sent that to me and that did not fix the problem. The computer did not come with a new monitor and I am using a Sony flatscreen, its about 4 years old. Is that my problem? I'm going to take the computer to the store and let them see if they can make it work with a new monitor.

Nov 4, 2008I have a Dell M6300 laptop running Vista Ultimate x86 that I want to ugprade to Ultimate x64. I currently use Embassy Trust Suite on this laptop (with Vista Ultimate x32) for hardware authentication. My HDD and system are locked by passwords which are both mapped to my fingerprint. The hardware authentication is the only functionality I use it for. The 2.1.2.25 version of Embassy Trust Suite is available from Dell for my model but it doesn't appear to be x64 compatible. It lists only Vista x86. Embassy has a full version on their website but it references the TPM driver from my manufacturer. Does anyone out there have an M6300 running an x64 version of Vista?

This doesnt seem to tie in with the write ups i have looked at and cant find the NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Also, there is no action when i insert the cdrom or dvd etc into the pc, have looked to find the manual start procedure but cant see anything in there, what drive should i be looking in?
