Shut Down Unexpectedly, Update Doesn't Apply
Mar 23, 2008
My new Dell Inspiron 531S shuts down unexpectedly several times a day. When I follow the Microsoft link to "correct this problem" Microsoft wants me to download an update, but then says the update doesn't apply to my computer...This is the gist of the error report: Product Windows: Problem: Shut down unexpectedly.

When I downloaded the Windows Easy Transfer utility for a 32 bit version of Windows Vista (Windows6.0-KB928635-x86) for file transfers to Windows 7 it will not install. I receive an error message that says, "The update does not apply to your system." But my system is a 32 bit version of Vista. I am trying to get prepared for my Windows 7 version that will arrive in October. Does anyone have any idea why I would be getting this error message?

I recently purchased Windows Vista Premium upgrade for my Computer. I installed it as an upgrade and it worked for a little bit then it needed to downloaded updates. After it downloaded the updates it said it needed to install them and close windows and reopen. So it closed and when Windows reopend it said that the updates had an error and needed to reload and shut down and restart. Then it did it again and again and again. So being disgusted with the whole thing I did a clean install. Now what my problem is, is that when I try to activate windows online it says that my version of Windows is for upgrading not for clean install and it wont give me the option to activate by phone. How do I go about doing it by phone? What would be the phone number to do this?

I have my windows update setting set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." Though, recently I've noticed that windows update doesn't notify me about new update like it has done before, where a icon in the tray popped up and notified me about new updates. Anyone know why? And how i can get it back to normal? I like to get notified when new updates are out, don't like to open windows update, and see there is some important updates that's been waiting for a week or two.

my Recycle Bin does not update its icon status, i.e. when I delete something I always have to press F5 to "refresh" the icons to get the correct icon of the "full" bin displayed; and when I empty the recycle bin, the same thing happens. What seems to be the problem here? Is there a icon cache file somewhere that I have to delete?

The other day my compter was working just fine, until the battery died and it shut off. Ever since then, when I start it up McAfee doesn't open at start up, or at all for that matter. And, everytime I double click on the shortcut, the picture comes up, but it just stays that way, and then the desktop freezes. And, when I try to open something that needs permission to continue, like when I right click and select "Run as administrator, nothing happens. Also, when I try to uninstall something, nothing happens. The internet icon on the taskbar is always frozen, indicating that there's no connection, when there actually is.
Most programs do the same as McAfee, althought Internet Explorer 8 works, but not well. It stops working alot and hulu videos don't work for instance. Also, anytime I try to download something on IE8, it quickly jumps to 99% and stops there. And, whenever I try system restore in help, the window stops responding. My mom thinks that it might be a virus from a song that she downloaded on LimeWire 5.1.1 PRO. But again, McAfee won't work. And my registry cleaning software won't open, because it has to ask permission. Which doesn't work. Windows Update doesn't even respond when I open it. What should I do?

I have Windows Vista with Windows Mail. When I click on Tools, a windows comes up and shows several tabs. I have gone to the Send tab to uncheck a couple of things I do not want operating. I notice that the window is quite large and I cannot see APPLY and OKAY. Consequently, I cannot have any of the options that I chose unchecked. Once I move out of the Options window, everything goes back the way it was. I thought I could minimize the size of the Options window, but no go on that. how I can get to Apply and Okay on this window?

Seems like this must have been answered somewhere, but I swear I could not find it so I gave up... If I open a folder with pictures or videos in it, in details view, it shows a column called Ratings which has 5 blank stars in it. This seems like a great way to rate photos and movie clips so I can search for favorites. However, I can't seem to figure out any way to APPLY ratings to photos or movie clips using those stars. What's the deal? Is there a way to indeed apply ratings to pictures and movies using those stars, or ??? why are they there??

I'm running Vista Home Premium on an HP dv9000 laptop. A couple of weeks ago, my laptop decided to shut down on its own. No error message, no blue screen... it just shut down. It does not restart. It will not start again for two or three minutes after it first shuts itself down. At first, I thought it was a problem with a game (The Sims 2), and maybe my graphics card (an nVidia GeForce 8800, IIRC). Then, it started doing it at other times, sometimes when I was just surfing the internet. I can give more information about my system upon request.

Windows shuts down unexpectedly. Is there a way to pinpoint the cause based on the logs and errors that Vista produces? I have read at least a half dozen reasons suggested for this type of occurrence in general and wonder if there is information being captured by the system that can help pinpoint the cause for my specific case.
Problem Reports and Solutons / View Problem History shows 11 instances of this, 7 today at approximately 1/2 hour intervals and one 5 days ago, one 6 days ago and two 7 days ago. It says: Windows / Shut Down Unexpectedly / (date & time) Solution Available. However whenever connected to Microsoft site it never comes back with any solution. Information from one of those messages:......

There are two times when I have noticed it stopping for a reason. Other times I do not know why it shuts off. Once it stopped after I had a flash drive in the USB port. I did the proper procedure for "safely removing" it, but the computer still shut off when I took the drive out. Another time the computer more or less went to sleep. I was able to restart the computer without it rebooting. I wonder if there is some way to set the time for it to do this.

I just bought a new Desktop, as so did my sister. Were both having the same problem. Once we try to turn off the computers they just keep restarting. It brings up a message windows shhutdown unexpectedly. Also when we try to shut it down it takes a really long time for it to log off and shutdown when it finally does and its starting up again.

There does not appear to be any problem with my server. I can go online and send from my providers site. There is no long period of inactivity and no apparent network problems. I have not been able to send from home for 3 days now.
