After an automatic update from Windows failed to finish and computer shut down... I did a manual update but now the Photo Gallery says my picture files are corrupt. AND my system restore point ONLY shows today... no previous dates to restore to.
View 4 RepliesI recently purchased Windows Vista Premium upgrade for my Computer. I installed it as an upgrade and it worked for a little bit then it needed to downloaded updates. After it downloaded the updates it said it needed to install them and close windows and reopen. So it closed and when Windows reopend it said that the updates had an error and needed to reload and shut down and restart. Then it did it again and again and again. So being disgusted with the whole thing I did a clean install. Now what my problem is, is that when I try to activate windows online it says that my version of Windows is for upgrading not for clean install and it wont give me the option to activate by phone. How do I go about doing it by phone? What would be the phone number to do this?

It downloads over and over for months.....any connection to AOL or Trend Pc-Cillin?...I'm technically challenged, so please reply in step by step solution, if you have one.

Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:
The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem
Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load?
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
I have used programs from MSDOS to Vista and by far Vista is the worst program of the lot. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Without exception, everytime I attempt to open a window, it takes for ever for the progress bar at the bottom to fillup and more often than not, I have to give up and start over. It is like it is stuck in a perpetual loop and just can't finish the requested task. I am paying for a cable modem and getting dial up results with Vista. This is fleecing of America. I recently had to purchase a new laptop and of course it had Vista. If the service pack does ever come and does not fix the issues with this crappy program, I would be in favor of filing a class action suit for Microsoft to either fix the issues or replace the program with XP which was great.

It has all available updates but when I go to the Windows Update site it does not show Vista SP1 , just says there are no new updates available.
I am about to go buy XP Pro and get rid of this dreadful OS, I was only keeping Vista until I could see if SP1 made a difference in the way it runs, but if I can't even access SP1 then there's no point keeping it.
The quality assurance section at Redmond must be out to lunch permanently. IE 8 update makes IE show your IE explorer history and .wmv videos no longer automatically runs in media player. These are just a few quirks. Vista is the worst operating system since Windows ME. I use Vista Ultimate in one machine and it locks me out of many directories when using explorer.

I was checking windows update, and it says it cannot download any updates, and it's most recent check was on 9/9/2008. I tried manually downloaded the windows vista service pack 1, but it keeps failing and giving me error 80070026. Some people suggested I turn off things like real time protection, so I uninstalled my McAfee virus scan, and downloaded windows defender instead. I then disabled real time protection on the window's defender. Nothing else should have real time protection, so why can't I update?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Dell desktop (got it Friday) with Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 on it. The problem I'm having is that I'm not able to shut the computer off. I'm going to the start menu, using the right arrow to display the full list of options (sleep, change users, restart, etc) and selecting Shut Down. Vista goes through the normal routine (shutting down, please wait, etc). After a couple of seconds the fans and hard drives shut down in the CPU and my monitor goes into sleep mode because it's not getting a signal. HOWEVER, in another second or two, the fans and hard drives spin back up, just like I'd pressed the power button on the CPU and the PC boots back up!
It was happening before I applied SP1, so that should not be the problem. I can't say for sure that it has been happening from the very beginning, but I think it has been. The first few times it happened I thought that maybe I had put it in sleep mode by accident (I typically hit shut down and leave the room before it's done). I haven't had time to reinstall any of my software yet, so it is pretty much as delivered from Dell. Right now the only way I can shut off my PC is to catch it on the reboot and hold in the power button on the CPU until it powers off.
My computer is still fairly new (less than a year old), and I experienced my first significant problem. I was copying my documents to a CD, when suddenly I was not able to delte anything from the CD. I tried to delete several times when my computer froze. Nothing worked. I tried to shut down by holding the power switch, on the computer, Alt Cntrl Delete, pressing the power switch several times rapidly, etc, until I was forced just to pull the plug. Upon start up the computer went through the routine of notifying me that I had shut down imporoperly etc and did a check for errors. I, then, immediatly did a complete chkdsk, (the two hour option) and no errors were discovered. As far as I could tell, I did not damage any programs or lose any documents. In such a scenario, did I have any other options rather than just pull the plug. Could there be any undisclosed damage to my puter?

This computer is running Windows Home Premium 32 bit. Also connected via wireless to the same router, are a netbook running Win 7 starter and a MAC laptop. All is well until I shut down the desktop. Afterwards I cannot connect to the internet with either laptop. I had hoped to be able to use the wireless to connect to the internet and shut down the desktop at night as the computer is in my guest room and had thought that the modem/router would allow me to do this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Service Pack 1 on a Fujitsu Tablet PC (T4220). For several days, I've been unable to install the Vista Security Update KB971657. The update downloads, my machine reboots, and then an error message comes up "Updates not configured correctly." The machine shuts down, reboots, and then gives the message "reverting changes." When I go to Windows Update in the Control Panel, I see that the update failed, but no error code appears. So far I have:
1. Disabled my antivirus program (Kaspersky), and tried to download and install again, but no luck.
2. Done a clean boot by changing the settings in the System Configuration Utility, rebooted, and tried to download and install again, with no luck. In reading through this section of the forum, I see at least one case in which an update wouldn’t install because the user has Service Pack 1 but should have SP2. Should I try downloading SP2 and see if this resolves the problem? Though I’m curious why Microsoft hasn’t installed SP2 automatically on this machine since my settings are for automatic installation of updates.
I have attempted many times and failed to install a security update for Microsoft.NetFramework,version 1.1 service pack 1 (KB29729). I receive a failed to install with a Code 66A. I have tried to find an explanation for the code to no avail. This is listed as an important update for vista but I am stumped as to why it won't install.
