I thought this might help people who are having problems updating Vista. This article describes the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista-based computers and for Windows Server 2008-based computers. Microsoft released the System Update Readiness Tool to resolve certain conditions that could cause installing updates and other software not to work. You do not have to manually run this tool. This tool is offered automatically through Windows Update to computers that have a condition that the tool could resolve.
After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.

A free Microsoft tool is available for download, designed to resolve failed installations of the second service pack for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Labeled the System Update Readiness Tool, the utility comes in handy in various scenarios when updates can no longer be integrated on top of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1. An illustrative example of a glitch end users might stumble upon is a failed install of either Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2009 SP2 accompanied by the following error code: 80070490. I'm running Vista Service Pack 1 on a Fujitsu Tablet PC (T4220). For several days, I've been unable to install the Vista Security Update KB971657. The update downloads, my machine reboots, and then an error message comes up "Updates not configured correctly." The machine shuts down, reboots, and then gives the message "reverting changes." When I go to Windows Update in the Control Panel, I see that the update failed, but no error code appears. So far I have:
1. Disabled my antivirus program (Kaspersky), and tried to download and install again, but no luck.
2. Done a clean boot by changing the settings in the System Configuration Utility, rebooted, and tried to download and install again, with no luck. In reading through this section of the forum, I see at least one case in which an update wouldn’t install because the user has Service Pack 1 but should have SP2. Should I try downloading SP2 and see if this resolves the problem? Though I’m curious why Microsoft hasn’t installed SP2 automatically on this machine since my settings are for automatic installation of updates.

Vista Home Basic SP2. When I try to run Windows update all I get is a blank page that says "The page failed to load". I've looked all around and have found a lot of people with the same or a similar problem but no firm solutions. I haven't used it in maybe a week and it's worked fine up till now. There have been no real changes since I used it last. Does anyone have a clue?

A few days ago, Windows Update Automatic updates installed an update on my computer called:
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:
The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem
Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load?

When i installed IE 8 as part of a Windows update I now have a problem opening pictures and other attachments in Winmail. I note that everyone appears to be having a problem with this update. If it does not work, it needs to be removed from the updates for Windows Vista. Vista is enough of a pain without adding to it.

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function. In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update. I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Noticed that this happened after a failed System Restore. I remember System Restore saying something about the HDD not being restored because it was not plugged in. I continued with the restore but it failed. I tried 3 times and the restore failed every time. Finally a restore in Safe Mode Worked. Now, when I plug in My Book Western Digital 500GB External HDD, Vista says that a driver could not be found. Even manually pointing to the System32 folder didn't work. I went to the WD website and no driver...just diagnostics and a control GUI or something. Since Vista can 'SEE' the HDD but can't 'OPEN THE DOOR', is there an alternate solution? I even ReInstalled the OS thinking that would somehow fix the problem. (I also had SP1). I need to be able to access this drive to recover Picture of my New Born baby Girl.

On my Dell Studio 17 I had Vista Ultimate x32 pre-loaded. I used a Vista Ultimate 64 bit CD to wipe it clean and hand-install. Interestingly enough, even though I checked the key/serial (that was on the sticker on the PC) re-checked and did it all over again, when the system went to auto-activate, it failed. So, I put in the same serial AGAIN after it failed , and voila - it worked! This is not the first time I've seen this though. My wife's desktop PC had Vista Home Premium on it, which I had to wipe in favor of WinXP Pro because of some incompatibilities with apps she was using for school. When she was done with those classes, I put Vista back on, and the exact same thing happened.

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

I am new to Vista having just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium running on it. As a long time user of Windows XP, I have encounterd a Vista issue that perpelexes me. From my days with XP, I am quite used to access files in most system folders, to check on them or occasionly even modify them - for example changing the Startup layout. However, in Vista, I am unable to access such directories as "Application data" or "Local Settings" even while using my administrator account. These aand other inaccessible directories have a unique icon with an arrow running through it, as if they were shortcut files. This suggests that they are somehow special to Vista. My question is whether these files are really unacessable to all users with even the highest security privleges, or have I configured something wrong in Vista's rather "curious" security system?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my wife's Sony Viao after Sony reimaged the HD (Vista Home Premium) and got to the point where I wanted to create a restore point. This attempt failed, I went into SAFE mode and tried again and I get a message "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log. (0x81000202). I go to the Event Viewer and it fails "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." When I go to the "Services" I don't see any entry for the "Event Log" - what should I be looking for? How do I get the system restore working?

Nothing else is visible.I'm able to login through safe mode.but don't know what to do with this. I also tried to do system repair. But no use.Ended up with same.
Tried to do system restore again. Even if I want to reinstall Vista, manufacturer has not provided any backup cd with my laptop.

I noticed that sp2 for vista is out so I went to windows upgrade site and downloaded/installed sp2. So the computer is rebooting afterwards and my computer died, kinda. What I saw after the post was a trouble screen that told me I had a problem. At the top it said there was a problem that may have been caused by either new hardware or software recently installed. It said I should select from the menu below to fix the trouble.
