there are so many updates that need to be download and install. the first time i have run the update my laptop kept on rebooting when installing an update. it kept telling me its installing 3of3. i had to restore my system. now i have to update again.
View 4 RepliesHad an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery ...
A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been experiencing some problems with both Windows Update and Windows Restore, and from what I've seen, they appear to be related. The issues started (or were made apparent) when I tried to install an update a few days ago. WU was stuck at "Preparing installation / Creating a restore point..." (probably not verbatim since I'm on a Danish Vista) - and I really mean stuck, as I even tried leaving this overnight. This seems to happen consistently with updates, except when they're ones that don't make a restore point. In this case, however, the computer doesn't want to shut down. It simply gets stuck at "Do not shut down or power off your computer / Installing update 1 of 1...", with no HDD activity whatsoever (also tried leaving this overnight).
I can of course force it to turn off by holding down the power button, but this is hardly optimal since I still don't get the updates installed. Now, the other problem; I naturally wanted to try and roll the computer back a few days using Windows Restore - however I've found that this doesn't work either. I open the application, UAC prompts me, but the window never opens. -rstrui.exe- keeps running, but I don't get the restore window up.............
I did a Windows Update for 12 Important and Recommended Updates on 6/1/2009. Ten days later I had to do a System Restore to a date before those updates. What is the status of those 12 updates? Are they still there? Do I have to install them again? If so, how do I do that?

You should know that this is my home computer, is stand alone not connected to any network or domain and I am running as administrator.

When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

It's just that I can't see it.Because Vista has been causing me so many problems (blue crash screens, system restore doesn't work etc) I must restore to factory settings, wiping the c: disk and starting again. I have backed up all files on an external drive. The problem is that I can't see how to import all my mail accounts and mail history back into Windows Mail which will have been reloaded from new.

It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.

I receive an error message that says, "The update does not apply to your system." But my system is a 32 bit version of Vista. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.
View 9 Replies View Relatedrunning Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
I went to accessories/system tools/system restore and clicked it. I then got a small dialogue window asking if I wanted to continue and I clicked continue. That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.
View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.
Not sure why but when I try to open system restore I get this message: "System Protection Settings has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I cannot make or restore my computer. If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter

The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.

I was looking at the features I don't have on my laptop (eg Windows Media Center, Windows Aero, Remote Desktop) and when I searched my computer, I found out I had features that Home Basic shouldn't have, like Windows Meeting Space and Windows Mobility Center, which I found strange. Now, I found out that if I upgraded to Home Premium, I would loose Windows Complete Backup and Restore and Networking Center and Remote Desktop, with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption not being available on on either OS. What I would like to know is if I upgraded to Home Premium, would I keep Windows Complete Backup and Restore and Networking Center and Remote Desktop from before the upgrade.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI remember with WinXP that if I had my computer turned on and was not using it for a certain length of time (maybe 30 minutes), it would 'automatically' create a 'System Checkpoint' in the System Restore area. I could also 'manually' create a 'System Checkpoint.' What I would like to know is - doees Vista (Home Premium) create such an 'automatic' System Checkpoint if I have notebook turned on, but don't use if for about 30 minutes?
(I believe there is a way to turn on an Automatic 'System Checkpoint' that you can schedule to be done at a certain time. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about an 'automatic' System Checkpoint' that is done if the computer is turned on, but not used for 30 minutes or more (approximately).

View 7 Replies View RelatedDaughters laptop was reporting that the HDD was about to fail, should backup and repair.
The concensus of opinion suggested a new HDD was the answer.
Have done that and created the restore disks from the original HDD.
Started the restore and went ok until nearly at the end of formatting the new HDD when I got the message
"error if it happens again contact HP" it did not happen again and appeared to restore files ok, did a verify and no errors.
Trying to boot from the HDD it now fails. Errors report registry incorrect plus others.
Cannot load my Vista version as is 64bit.
I cannot obviously send the errors to MS as the thing will not boot.
Any solutions obvious apart from getting a disk containing Vista 32 bit system
Laptop is an HP Presario running Vista HOme Premium 32.
Is there any utility built into Vista or XP to allow one to create a complete system restore DVD?
