System Went Auto Activation Failed
Mar 9, 2009
On my Dell Studio 17 I had Vista Ultimate x32 pre-loaded. I used a Vista Ultimate 64 bit CD to wipe it clean and hand-install. Interestingly enough, even though I checked the key/serial (that was on the sticker on the PC) re-checked and did it all over again, when the system went to auto-activate, it failed. So, I put in the same serial AGAIN after it failed , and voila - it worked! This is not the first time I've seen this though. My wife's desktop PC had Vista Home Premium on it, which I had to wipe in favor of WinXP Pro because of some incompatibilities with apps she was using for school. When she was done with those classes, I put Vista back on, and the exact same thing happened.

I bought a computer last year with an OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate x64. I needed an additional 4GB of RAM and I was having problems with the computer not booting up. After posting in the memory modules manufacturer's forum they told me to alter some parameters in the BIOS regarding memory timings. After some experimentation, the computer would not even post to BIOS, so I decided to clear CMOS. Now, every time I boot into Windows, it asks me to activate and if I activate it, it tells me the license is already assigned to another computer. I contacted Microsoft support here in Portugal and I already tried telephone activation and System Restore as specified in the troubleshooting for activation, with no luck. After contacting Microsoft support again they told me to post here in the newsgroups to try to find a solution, otherwise they would have to bill me for telephone support.

My laptop came with Vista Home Premium installed. I downloaded a Flash-BIOS update as per advice of my HP Care Centre. After it was done installing my laptop shut off (as I was told it would do). When I turned it back on, I was prompted to enter a Product Activation Key. I entered the Windows Product Key as shown on the sticker on the base of the laptop. The message I received was "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation" For the record, YES, I am entering the code in properly.

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function. In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update. I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Noticed that this happened after a failed System Restore. I remember System Restore saying something about the HDD not being restored because it was not plugged in. I continued with the restore but it failed. I tried 3 times and the restore failed every time. Finally a restore in Safe Mode Worked. Now, when I plug in My Book Western Digital 500GB External HDD, Vista says that a driver could not be found. Even manually pointing to the System32 folder didn't work. I went to the WD website and no driver...just diagnostics and a control GUI or something. Since Vista can 'SEE' the HDD but can't 'OPEN THE DOOR', is there an alternate solution? I even ReInstalled the OS thinking that would somehow fix the problem. (I also had SP1). I need to be able to access this drive to recover Picture of my New Born baby Girl.

My neighbor bought a Compaq Presario with an AMD Athlon 64 bit processor which came installed with Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit operating system. If he buys the upgrade to Windows Home Premium will the disk recognize he has a 64 bit processor and install the 64 bit operating system and not just upgrade to 32 bit Vista Home Premium system.

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

I am new to Vista having just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium running on it. As a long time user of Windows XP, I have encounterd a Vista issue that perpelexes me. From my days with XP, I am quite used to access files in most system folders, to check on them or occasionly even modify them - for example changing the Startup layout. However, in Vista, I am unable to access such directories as "Application data" or "Local Settings" even while using my administrator account. These aand other inaccessible directories have a unique icon with an arrow running through it, as if they were shortcut files. This suggests that they are somehow special to Vista. My question is whether these files are really unacessable to all users with even the highest security privleges, or have I configured something wrong in Vista's rather "curious" security system?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my wife's Sony Viao after Sony reimaged the HD (Vista Home Premium) and got to the point where I wanted to create a restore point. This attempt failed, I went into SAFE mode and tried again and I get a message "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log. (0x81000202). I go to the Event Viewer and it fails "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." When I go to the "Services" I don't see any entry for the "Event Log" - what should I be looking for? How do I get the system restore working?

Nothing else is visible.I'm able to login through safe mode.but don't know what to do with this. I also tried to do system repair. But no use.Ended up with same.
Tried to do system restore again. Even if I want to reinstall Vista, manufacturer has not provided any backup cd with my laptop.

Vista started giving a blue screen a couple of days ago. Mentioned something about a bad device, but no new devices have been added. Went through the typical steps, tried to boot in safe mode and got the following errors:
AtBroker.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK.
Explorer.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Blue Screen
Then booted to my install dvd, tried to fix errors. Came back with a failed check at the file system integrity check. Ran the check a second time and no errors are found. Can't boot in safe mode, and when i try to repair errors I get no errors found.

I have just built my first computer. My whole family is a mac family but i have always found vista easy to use on my friends computers. I bought Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - OEM from newegg. Now when i boot from The disc it says "Loading windows file...." and once it is done with that an error appears saying. "Windows failed to start. a Recent hardware or software change might be the cause, to fix this problem....."
It gives me ways to fix it but all of them require some OS to be on the computer and i have none.. It also says: File: windowssystem32ootwinload.exe......

I am running Vista on a Dell XPS 420. I came home to find both drives failed in a RAID 1 mirror. Dell gave me no help recovering data, but did send two new drives. I have installed Vista on one of the new drives without RAID. I wanted to see if I could recover any files from the failed drives, but I can't seem to get Vista to recognize either of the old drives that were in the failed RAID array. The failed drive does appear during boot up and still shows as part of a failed array. How can I get Vista to recognize the failed drive so that I can then attempt to run file recovery software on it?

I got a problem with a reinstall of Vista 64 Home Premium. A few days ago I tried to manually force activation of Vista, and I was told the key was already in use. I thought it was due to recently reinstalling it so I just let it go. Today it tried to automatically activate and it failed. The error is the same that the key is already being used.
1. I have no other PC's with Vista on.
2. Nobody visited me recently, and I can't think of anyone I know who would steal the key.
3. I never posted my key anywhere online
What can I do in this situation? When I click a support link in the activation window I am being told support cost 540 Dkr which translates to US$80-90 which is almost as much as I paid for my Vista!

I have a 2 month old HP tx2 notebook. It activated fine when first booted. Used it abouy a month and IE crashed with a BSOD, and upon recovery I have a notice on the bottom of the desktop that it says this copy of windows in not genuine. When I reboot it says I must activate. When I try it fails and the only options are new product key or contact HP. I called HP and they said to use the key off the bottom of the computer which does not work. They then want me to do a complete reinstall which is quite unacceptible with all the work it took to get this new machine loaded to work with.
Can i buy a new license and be sure it is going to take. Buying a new copy of home premium unfair but is way better than all the work I would have to do otherwise. The OS is home premium 64 bit. I would not want to install a new copy because of the driver issues (touchsmart), I just want to use the key. When I try to activate I get: Buy new product key online. Try a different product key Contact Hewlett-Packard to help resolve this proble Have tried option 2 and 3 to no avail.
I would try option 1 if I could be assured it would work without loss of data. HP says to reinstall the OS. They told me Microsoft does not support OEM installs. Why not? There is no phone option. when I try to input a new key I get an 0xC004E003 error. Updates work fine and all my software works as well. The desktop background does not work and it has the not genuine at the right bottom corner. There does not seem to be a count down timer either.

I recieved my new hard drive in the mail today and so excited I switched out my 250gb for my new 750gb without reformating or anything. So, now I am not sure what to do because it says my activation key is still active from my other hdd. Oh and if it helps I went from 32bit on 250 to 64bit on the 750. I bought Vista Ultimate in 2007, so I have the RTM version of it.

No this is nothing to do with Piracy and whatnot, my Vista is perfectly legal (and I have the Credit card bill to prove this.). I am on my "1st build" and am currently using the "30 day trial" - the reason for this was that I wanted to be sure that everything ran smoothly before I activated the software, mainly because I was unsure about whether or not x64 would play nice (and I may have had to install x32 instead) It does, and I'm chuffed.
My main Q is, should I activate... and say in 6 months time, I have to do a fresh build , I assume that I will be able to without incident (worst case scenario I have to phone MS, but then I did that with XP and had no problems.) Secondly, should I wish to change Hardware i.e. Graphics card / adding another hard drive (which are about the only two upgrades I'd do to this monster of a machine) after activation, I assume thats allowed ?

I just bought a used tablet PC with vista ultimate on it. I have spent the past 2 days updating and putting all of my software on it but now it says there's some kind activation exploit on it and that it will probably kill the OS pretty soon because this is a no-no. Nowhere in the notice did it tell me I could just buy a new serial number. It also gave me no option for removing the exploit.
I want to buy a legal copy and fix the issue but I don't want to re-install everything. Is this possible? (I closed the message and I don't know how to bring it back so I do not know the name of the exploit). Also- the guy who sold me the computer had at least a dozen other used machines all running Vista. There was no old software on the tablet, so I'm pretty sure he put the OS on the tablet (and the exploit). Should Microsoft be notified? He's in the Seattle area, close to the mothership...

I just finished re-installing my full retail version of Vista Home Premium on a different machine and expected activation to fail with a new motherboard and hard drive. But, when I clicked for it to activate expecting to have to phone in for approval since it was on a different machine, it activated automatically. I think this may be related to installing SP1 from a purchased disk from NewEgg and may have confused Windows into thinking it was already activated before SP1 was installed?
I don't think the O.S. is being recognized as valid when I try to download the Media Center Guide. I get a constant error code 13 and can't download the guide. I have been to Windows Update and downloaded a number of post SP1 updates without problem but no go with the Guide. Is there a window site I can go to to make sure my installation is validated? Perhaps after it is properly validated the Guide downloads will work? I installed SP1 from the disk right after the O.S. install without going to Window Update and I think I may have skipped a step where my O.S.

When i enter my product key it says that this version is meant for upgrade and not for a new install. I found that a bitt odd because I had to clean install. Anyway, now i'm trying to get a new license key and I keep getting this error: Error We are unable to process your order at this time. Please try again later. Error Code: 1067
