View 6 RepliesI am upgrading from XP to Vista (on the way to Windows 7). After it completes the compatibility check it starts to copy files. About 20 minutes into the process the upgrade aborts with the following message: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm having problems starting up my windows vista.. when i turn my laptop on there's a screen that comes up showing "configuration updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete" and after a couple of seconds my computer shuts down, restarts and does the process all over continuously with no option of cancelling this process....
View 9 Replies View RelatedHad an incomplete install of a program...computer otherwise working fine...did a system restore to try to go back to preinstall...in the system restore shutdown and restart, now hung up in a update configuation loop that is in third step up to 99% that shuts down only to do the same thing over and over again. So my system never gets to the mainscreen acknowledging system was restored.
I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery ...

View 6 Replies View RelatedI copied the following from the "Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions" which I found found elsewhere on the Microsoft website. Multiboot Environments. Can I install Windows Vista on a computer that already contains an operating system? Yes. You can install Windows Vista on a different partition. It is best to install Windows Vista after you install the older operating systems. Older operating systems will continue to use Boot.ini for boot configuration. Should I replace the code that used to work with Boot.ini to now use BCD on Windows Vista? No. You will need to alter your code so that it uses Boot.ini for the older operating systems, and so that it uses BCD on Windows Vista. What does "your code" mean?
If I want to install both XP & Vista on separate partitions, apparently I need to install XP first. During the XP install I have the option of creating 2 partitions don't I? It's my understanding that there can be only 1 primary partition & only the primary partition is bootable. Every other partition is an extended partition. This is what confuses me. XP uses the boot.ini file & is installed first on the primary partition. Won't Vista be installed on an extended partition? Since XP uses the boot.ini file & Vista uses the bcdedit file, which file is used if both XP & Vista are installed in a multiboot configuration? Which would be the default OS? To further complicate matters, suppose that I want to install XP, Vista & Linux. Which of the 3 do I install first since Linux uses a different boot file?
For the last few days my 'pc' (http://www.vistax64.com/) takes three and half minutes to load. I did have the windows update KB954430 installed around that time. All malware and virus scans come up clean. Could this update be the problem? It takes 90 sec. to get to the welcome screen, then the screen goes black untill the programs begin to load at 195 seconds. the loading of programs seems to be in a normal time frame.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer M5620, Intel Quad Core Q6600 computer, running Vista Home Premium.
It has all available updates but when I go to the Windows Update site it does not show Vista SP1 , just says there are no new updates available.
I am about to go buy XP Pro and get rid of this dreadful OS, I was only keeping Vista until I could see if SP1 made a difference in the way it runs, but if I can't even access SP1 then there's no point keeping it.
The quality assurance section at Redmond must be out to lunch permanently. IE 8 update makes IE show your IE explorer history and .wmv videos no longer automatically runs in media player. These are just a few quirks. Vista is the worst operating system since Windows ME. I use Vista Ultimate in one machine and it locks me out of many directories when using explorer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy CPU will idle around 30%, and my memory will idle around 40%. I have 3.5GB of ram, and a dualcore 2.4GHZ cpu. I was checking windows update, and it says it cannot download any updates, and it's most recent check was on 9/9/2008. I tried manually downloaded the windows vista service pack 1, but it keeps failing and giving me error 80070026. Some people suggested I turn off things like real time protection, so I uninstalled my McAfee virus scan, and downloaded windows defender instead. I then disabled real time protection on the window's defender. Nothing else should have real time protection, so why can't I update?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer will not boot into Windows. I have a 250 GB HDD and a 500 GB HDD. the 250 GB had Vista x64 on it and then I partitioned it with Acronis (after backing it up to the 500 GB HDD) so I could install Windows 7 x64 on the smaller (about 55 GB) partition that I have just made. That didn't work so I reformatted my 250 with Acronis (the backup that I had) and tried to install Win7 on the 250 and just make a small partition from the installation screen. Now when I try to boot up there is just a black screen with a white blinking hash mark in the upper left corner. When I use a boot disk it does show that there is partition on the 250 GB and both Vista and 7 are installed, but for some reason I can't seem to boot to them. Long story short: I want to be able to dual boot to windows vista or windows 7. How do I do that?

I was messing around trying to install another OS which didn't install right and doesn't work and I seemed to erase the windows vista bootloader. So I try using the windows vista recovery disc to repair windows but it does not show up in operating system list in the recovery disc so I click on the option that says to click if your operating system does not show up on the list and it brings me to this file explorer and requests a configuration file in order to view vista. So could you please tell me what configuration file is the one I need and where I could find it on my hard drive since windows is still intact on it, only the bootloader is gone.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem installing vista 64 bit or 32 bit after I already had it on my machine. Here is what happened and what I have. I built this machine just 3 weeks ago, mb is gigabyte ep45c-ud3r, e8400, 4 gigs of G.Skill pc 8500, 320gig Samsung sata drive, Samsung cd/dvd burner, and I also have 2 older IDE drives running I think they are 175 gigs each. Do the other day I got a disk with vista ultimate 64 bit and decided to run a clean install, my machine had the 32 bit system of the
same.
The 64 bit system began to install and when it gets to the point after you select which drive to install it on goes to the next screen it starts to open files, or extract shows 0% one dot and comes up with this message: "windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase, restart the installation" when I do that same thing happens and now same thing happens with the 32 bit system, I have tried 2 disks for that.
We have a network of 5 vista machines, 3 xp machine, 7 voip phone and 1 network printer. The internet of all 3 windows xp machine keeps on dropping once everyday, removing the ethernet cable and putting the cable back doesn't help it, restarting the system doesn't help it, refreshing the ip doesn't, restarting the router either, the only way I found to give them internet again is to manually set the ip and dns configuration daily.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a gateway MT3422 that I have had for 2 years and it came with vista. I have had to restore my computer once since I have had it and never had any serious problems with it. 3 months ago, my computer was trying to install SP1 and when the computer restarts, it goes to a blue screen, then into a black screen and it says "error, calling phyllat. can not find operating system" and it locks up. I push ALT+CTRL+DEL to reset it and it reboots and says the upgrade did not install and gives me the option to reinstall it. After 3 months of trying, I gave up and ignored my computer to download and install the service pack.
Then one day, it actually installed SP1 and when it restarted, it said "error, do you wish to launch system restore (recommended)" I did and it went to a black screen for 4 hours - no cpu or aything running or eve the blue cpu light to show its running. No fan on, no noise from the processor. I shut my computer off and it doesnt ever go to the windows vista loading screen.
Ive tried to boot in safe mode and it gets hung up on system/windows32.....drv and never goes any further and gets caught in a loop. I pushed f8 to launch the repair mode, and it gets caught in a loop. I put i my restore disc that came with my laptop and when I ask it to install windows vista, it gets caught in a loop. tried to do a system restore and it cant because my C drive is corrupted.
Got this update bug, always updating, then turning off, then configuring, then "reverting changes" and this is an infinite loop. Any tips?
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust wondering why the reported Physical Memory in the Task Manager drops to 14%, after an hour or so, from 28% when initially starting the system. Processes drop from 49 to 46. Mainly Trustedinstaller and winupdate processes. I know some applications check for updates upon boot, but I kind of disabled most (if not all) of them except Vista updates. Also one of the many svchost.exe starts off with a reported Commit Size of 177K and later is down to 155K. This of course is not a problem. Just Vista64 curious!
View 3 Replies View Relatedi am running vista home premium that came installed on my toshiba.
it was running a tad strangly but still running (not noticing the the computer name had been changed and various other items)..
then i was doing a normal update of adobe pdf reader and the install crashed. after that the microsoft installer wont work, i cant boot my computer normally altho it does open in safe mode - however, the windows installer wont work - even in safe mode.
when i try to boot it normally it seems to start fine but hangs once the desktop appears.....
i have tried repairing the startup process via the vista repair disc.
i have tried restoring back to a previous restore point
nothing so far has worked.
after doing the above i cant even start my computer normally (altho i can boot in safe) it seems to begin the process then the screen just goes black altho the disk light is still on....
i am now just about to reinstall my entire system but i would rather not have to do this....
is there anything else i can try? i have a time sensitive deadline that needs to be reached (of course) so i cant play around with this for too long.
My computer is stuck at the windows update screen when I boot it up. A week or so ago I had some trouble installing a program. Looking for a solution, eventually I found that my windows hadn't been updating for several months. Trying to update manually didn't work and I got an error message. Googling that error message was what brought me to vistax64.com in the first place, and after reading around a bit I managed to determine that I was missing my Windows Update Module (unsure about the exact name). I followed a tutorial that led me into regedit to delete some keys. Now, to the matter at hand: after deleting these keys and restarting, my windows got stuck at the update screen. It says something like: "Configuring update 3 of 3 - 0% Do not turn off or bla bla bla" for a few minutes, without the percentage changing, then restarts. Problem is, when it restarts it displays the exact same message and does the same thing all over again. So it gets caught in a restart loop. I have tried booting from my Vista DVD and have tried the startup repair thing, but that isn't any help. I don't have any save points to restore from, nor a backup. So - the question is: Is there anything I can do about this without having to format and reinstall Windows?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThat is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.

Microsoft Update was first released a few years ago for Windows XP and Server 2003 as a great way to update all of your Microsoft software installed on your PC. Not only would it update Windows, but it would also update Microsoft Office. Are you a Microsoft Outlook user? If so, Microsoft Update would even download updated junk mail signatures when they are released.
In Windows Vista the new Windows Update application is no longer web-based. Microsoft has built-in the old Microsoft Update functionality into the new interface but you need to turn it on before you can use it. Follow these steps to turn on updates for other Microsoft applications: ...
I am updating my computer and I thought it was finish but my computer restarts and I encountered the death blue screen. I can't switch into safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with Command Prompt and Last Known good configuration. I don't know how to solve this problem because I can't get into any of the modes and even I inserted the installation disc I can't still see any repair computer or what. It will just turn to blank screen with space at the upper left after if i will insert the installation disc.
