Shortly after installing Vista Service Pack 1, I discovered an icon in my task tray that urges me to update Java. I am a user only. Don't even know or care what Java is unless it's needed on my pc. I don't do games or other resource-intense stuff like music. I do do a lot of photos, Word docs, and financial things. Do I need this update, and if not, how the blazes do I get it off my task tray?
View 8 RepliesFirefox frequently stops working and this seems to have something to do DEP (Data Execution Prevention) as the DEP icon appears in th system tray after each crash. I have tried to turn off DEP for Firefox but system insists that Firefox must run with DEP on.
View 9 Replies View RelatedToday I switched on Windows Defender(for the first time)and ran a quick scan which was fine, but I've noticed a new icon in the systems tray with a green circle and a tick in it.When I hover the pointer over it, it says "Safely Remove Hardware".I've looked everywhere for an explanation but can't find any info anywhere. Can someone tell me what it means please.Also,do I need Defender on as I have McAfee Security Centre installed on my pc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs far as I can determine, this update (released 22Oct08) does not work, at least not with Windows Vista Home Premium. I had update 7 running, and got an update notification for Release 10 earlier today. Downloaded and installed the update, tried the Java test page, Firefox (both 3.0.3 and today's Minefield beta-test for Firefox 3.1) hung. Tried the update in IE7, that, too, hung.
Went to Control Panel, clicked on the Java icon, had some problems opening it; when it did finally open, I went into Advanced and found that Update 10 was not recognizing IE. Opened IE, redownloaded the off-line update, to see if that worked; answer is, no, it still did not recognize IE. Back to Java, found the off-line installed for Update 7, removed 10, reinstalled 7; Java works once again. In the midst of this aggravation, trying to figure out what the problem was, I did find one link to an article that said Update 10 had been delayed due to some unspecified problem. Seems to me that, at least for Vista Home Premium, there is still at least one unspecified problem with Update 10.
Every time I log in, after a few seconds, this globe-like icon appears on my clock bar, and the bar freezes, including the menu. I canīt open anything, I canīt even change between opened software. The only thing that works is whatever program Iīm running, which I can continue to use with no problem, but once Iīm done, I have to signout the user to be able to turn it off. I press ctrl+alt+del, and the program administrator opens, but the computer doesnīt let me access it, since it freezes. I booted in safe mode and disabled everything on start up, still happens.

You don't need to use that Sun Download manager. Just click on the link here, choose offline installation, close your browsers, Uninstall your old Java versions, Unblock the new setup and run it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've run across a couple of applications (Avira Premium Security Suite, Spyware Terminator) that, despite choosing the "Always Hide" option for their tray icon, every time the computer reboots, they default back to "Hide When Inactive." Sure, it's a minor issue to set them back to "Always Hide" when I reboot, but is there some sort of tweak somewhere that will force these applications to remember the "Always Hide" setting, instead of defaulting back to "Hide When Inactive?"

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer laptop with Vista (SP1). Recently I have noticed the power icon no longer displays in the notification area. If I go to Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, Notification Area tab, the Power check box is grayed out and not checked. This may have happened as a result of installing SP1, which I did two weeks ago, but I am not sure. I did not notice this until three days ago.
I have tried a registry edit I found online (deleting any keys regarding "iconstreams"), but this did not help.
A friend is having a problem with the text (Name) of his desktop icons. Text should be white on the blue background but the text appears to have some blue color in it which makes it appear blurred. When he has black text on a white background it appears to have some white in it. It looks like the background color is bleeding into the text color.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWant to update to Java 6 17 but when I try to install in 32 bit IE or firefox (which i use the most) I run into a problem because the old version of Java can't be found! On control panel and remove program utility I can see the update 6 11 but when I try to uninstall then a box pops up telling me that it can't proceed as the source file can't be located (jre 1.6.0_11-c-l.msi). I think this is why the later version won't install because it looks for the older version first? I have tried to run microsoft utility cleaner but I get a error code 800A0046 and Microsoft VBScript runtime error. Also tried Revo uninstaller but this could not get past the same pop up box seen when using remove a program via control panel!

load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so.
The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside.
The balloon points to a square turquoise application icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background. This sits on the bottom left of the turquoise application icon.
In the balloon, it states,
"Windows has blocked some start-up programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me only one program that was blocked, which was my malwarebytes program. This has never happened to me before. So I clicked that program to unblock it but when I rebooted, the balloon and icon reappeared on the system tray.
I have problem with this version of java on Internet Explorer 7. I am using Vista x64 Ultimte version. Problem is that on java sites eg my online banking, the applets or whatever doesn't load.
But on my firefox or opera browser, it load the same site correctly with the java applets.

That is the one in front of the two monitor icons that can display in an animated way. I have not noticed this phenomenon before much. I know it displays a red cross when there is no connection & an exclamation mark when there is some problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.

Whenever I open the Windows Update panel, an empty window appears for an instance, and then Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. On top of that, Windows Update crashes on occasion by itself for a couple of times and then settles down. I did check the disk for errors, ran the scanners, manually installed most relevant updates I could find including the System Update Readiness Tool, also renaming the software distribution folder and resetting ie7 -all in vain.
