View 4 RepliesWe have outlook 2003 on several pc's and all attachments come through fine. We got 2 new pc's with this p.o.s. Vista home premium on them and they come with Windows Mail (formerly outlook). Well, hardly any attachments come through with Windows Mail, while outlook 2003 is working just fine. The help file on Windows mail says to go Tools, Options, Security, and to uncheck the boxes that keep attachments from opening. I have done this, and of course, it doesnt work. Messages continue to come through without any attachments on Windows Mail, while the the pc's with outlook are just fine. Most attachments in any kind of file format don't come through. We are particularly concerned with PDF files which we need more than anything else.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSometime last year, I began having trouble opening .pdf attachments in windows mail. I get the following message whenever I attempt to open the ..pdf file in windows mail:?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel?.
I have been ?saving? the attachment to ?desktop? in order to open it, etc. I?ve already checked & have reset the Set Associations control panel?s .pdf to adobe. I have no problem opening ?Word? or any other document, just ..pdf-- & I ONLY have trouble with this in windows mail. The other two Users on my HP desktop are not having my user problem & I am growing weary of constantly having to save/open each document OUTSIDE of windows mail every time I receive .pdf attachments.
I cannot download email attachments on windows mail. I am instructed to use 'set association control panel' Where is it and what does it do?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThere are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Vista and Office 2007 and I have a question about file associations. For my .xlsx files it shows the default as Microsoft Offie Excel. I assume that is Excel 2007, which I don't want. I want to change it to Excel 97-2003 so all my Excel documents will open in that. So I try to change the program by clicking on the Change program... button and the only program there is Microsoft Office Excel. I'm not given the option to change it to 97-2003.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSince migrating to Windows Mail a year ago on a new PC running Vista, I've been unable to open, or to save and open, email attachments received in .pdf or .jpg format. When I try to open .pdf attachments, I get an error message reading, "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." If I save a .pdf attachment in Adobe Reader and then try to open it, I get a message saying, "Adobe Reader could not open [file] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I run Adobe Reader 8. Where do I look to find a solution to this problem? Is it related to the similar problem with JPEG's?
Only couple of months I have been using Windows Vista, In the last two days some files with file extensions xlsx, wav and mp3 have been deleted without any hint. I did not deleted these files. I am at a loss why this has happened.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently started using vista on a new computer. When receiving email in vista mail I cannot open attachments with .pps file. It will open if I save it. The file extension is correct in the directory for vista to open it. I noticed a similar problem in the forum for .doc files but the fix for that did not seem to address the .pps files.

I have tried without success to get Windows Explorer to show a file extension, but cannot find a way to do it. I have tried all the options in View / Choose Details but don't have all luck. I guess I must be stupid. There must be a way. I am running Home Premium.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor the last couple of weeks when I receive mail with attached pdf files, if I try to move or delete the mail Windows Mail hangs. Sometime it recovers but otherwise I need to kill it. I can open the attachment by clicking on the paper clip etc and everything seems fine so I don't think it's a security thing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
Before trying an Excel forum, I thought that I would state my question here first, since it is Vista-related. When I export a file from a website to an Excel spreadsheet where I am using a Windows 2000 platform, it is saved as an Excel file. However, when I export this same file from the same website on a Vista platform, it gets saved as a CSV file. (I don't have the option of specifying the file format at the website. The website does ask if one wants to save the file to Excel.) I am using Office 2000. What is the method for converting the CSV file to an Excel format?
View 5 Replies View RelatedStarting about 2 weeks ago, I can't open attachments in Windows Mail. Message says "command failed to execute" I have been reading the posts and still don't know what to do. How do I know if IE8 has been installed as an update? I'm inexperienced with technical stuff. I don't think I installed it, could it have installed on it's own as an update? Tried saving them to desktop but don't know how to separate them from the e-mail, so they still don't open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWith Vista Ultimate I had Excel 2000 (who can afford an upgrade?) dump a file I was working on - would not let me save it. Since closing down Excel the file has simply vanished from my hard drive. There are no shadows, no .tmp files, no backups, nothing in the rubbish bin, no hidden or system fiiles - it's as if this file never existed. I have never experienced such a clinical dumping of data before coming to Vista.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently I was unable to open attachments at all, after uninstalling IE8 I
can now open PPS files but when I try to open a PDF attachment it opens up
Microsoft Office Picture Manager. The only way I can view the attachment is
to save it to another folder and then open it with Adobe 9.1.
I use a Vista and my Windows mail does not send any email with attachments like pictures or short movies, pps and others. Small attchments and normal outgoing emails work fine. I use ZoneAlarm and already disabled the email function, and dont know what else to do.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMost of the time when I attempt to open attachments (Media files such as jpg, mpg, wmv, etc.) the file does not open but I receive a message that OE cannot fnd the file. Usually, if I close OE and reopen, it will operate properly. Sometimes it is necessary to close and reopen more than one time. This never occurred prior to installing IE8. I am using Vista (64) home premium.

View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently bought a Dell Inspiron laptop from Future Shop and having a
couple of challenges:
1. Regarding standard text signature at the end of an e-mail: I set up
going through tools, options, signature and want it to appear at the end
of each originally created e-mail and the end of each reply or
forward...in Arial and font size of 10. Works fine when I create an
e-mail, but for a reply or a forward appears as Times New Roman.
Anything I can do to ensure always shows as Arial?
2. Regarding attachments received with an e-mail: often unable to open
when I click on. Someone suggested saving the attachment to the desk top
and then opening...generally works but a pain to save. Someone suggested
the problem is that I don't have full Microsoft Office suite on the
laptop just what came with it-Microsoft Works. Attachements being sent
are not unusual...generally Word, Excel, PDF or PowerPoint. Any
suggestion so that I don't have to save to desktop?
3. Last question...laptop came with a webcam, the workings of which I
am new to. Doesn't always open/work when I click on its icon...window
opens and says " please plug in a supported webcam". Sometimes when I
unplug from internet and reboot computer the webcam works.

ALL email attachments are blocked. I made sure the -Do not allow attachments-.... is unchecked in the Security tab. I'm running AVG Anti-Virus and checked those settings as well. I do see the paper clip indicating an attachment in mmy Inbox but when I opent he email there is no attachment.

View 9 Replies View RelatedJust configured Windows Mail on my new laptop, and I can send and receive messages okay, but I cannot receive attachments. There isn't even any indication that the attachment was blocked; it's just not there. Also, I cannot receive HTML formatted e-mails (I get a news headline service); I can just see the hyperlinks. I have unchecked (cleared) the box that blocks .exe files, etc, but I'm only trying to send Word docs (to myself at this point to see if everything is working).
