Files Lost: File Extensions Xlsx, Wav And Mp3 Have Been Deleted Without Any Hint
Apr 29, 2008
Only couple of months I have been using Windows Vista, In the last two days some files with file extensions xlsx, wav and mp3 have been deleted without any hint. I did not deleted these files. I am at a loss why this has happened.
I have Vista and Office 2007 and I have a question about file associations. For my .xlsx files it shows the default as Microsoft Offie Excel. I assume that is Excel 2007, which I don't want. I want to change it to Excel 97-2003 so all my Excel documents will open in that. So I try to change the program by clicking on the Change program... button and the only program there is Microsoft Office Excel. I'm not given the option to change it to 97-2003.
The aftermath of a trojan attack (Vista Guardian) has resulted in the file association of exe files being lost and hence an inability to run exe files. I am quite convinced that the trojan is now dead, but I can't figure out how to fix the damage. If I could get into the registry I could fix it, but of course regedit is an exe file so I can't run it. I've tried tricks like running it from command line or from inside a batch file but with no joy. I have also made a copy and called it regedit.com. This looked romising as Vista asked for user permission to run the program, but then nothing. It gets killed off before it starts. I am not familiar with the particular machine, nor am I very familiar with Vista and I am now at a loss as to how to proceed.
Vista Home Premium, began getting message that c:users(user name)AppDataRoaming is corrupt and unreadable. Used Dell online technical support. They copied all the files under the username to a backup location, created a new username, and then copied the files back in. Basically copied the directory C:users(user name) to C:users(user name2). Then deleted the user name that wasn't working in the control panel. Looks great except all my wife's emails are now gone - and she had multiple folders with emails stored in them and thousands of deleted emails she referred to. Mad as a hornet!
Is there any way of recovering the deleted email files and then getting them back into Mail? I am trying Pareto Logic Data Recovery Program to search for the directory that was deleted that stores the emails C:users(user name)AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows MailLocal Folders. So far it is only finding folders with (user name2).I realize now I should have exported all the mail to a backup file before deleting the username, but the tech guy didn't tell me to do that before we deleted the old user name.
I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.
I'm running vista 64 home premium and I have noticed that on a number of windows games the hint windows are dispalying over large fonts so you cant read the entire hint. for example in freecell when you try to move a stack of cards thats too large the hint window is supposed to tell you how many cards you are able to move at that moment, but that part of the message is off the egde of the window. Ive noticed this with all the card games the mahjong game even the kids game Purble place. Ive tried adjusting the fonts dpi setting and even the advanced setting from personalizations.
When I go to C:Users I see "mine", public, and the other I deleted named "test" ....I'm positive that deleted the account and all files but I could be mistaken. Is there a fix for this? I want it deleted.
I'm trying to install ASP.NET 2.0 on Windows Vista home by following instructions on this page. The last instruction on this URL is "Go to Web Service Extensions and Allow ASP.NET 2.0 " Now I've tried my best but I cannot find Web Service Extensions in Windows Vista Home? Where are these located?
something weird is going on...this has never happened to me before, but whenever i try to download files off the internet, they just get deleted right after it finishes downloading. the part0 of the file still resides tho, and i cannot find the file anywhere on the computer.
When opening a folder in Vista my Word document appears as a notepad file and opens in notepad. However, when i go to my XP it appears as a word doc and opens correctly. Is this a vista problem? I have Office 2003 on both computers.
I have an issue where I lost the file association for .DOC and .PSD files, but I restored them and now the icons look like this instead of the full icon.
I have deleted a file from my docs, then emptied the recycling bin, then deleted loads more stuff and again emptied the recycling bin. Suddenly there was a Word document that didn't want deleting. I have found it again using Recuva but it tells me that it isn't recoverable as the file has been written over. Is there anyway of recovering a file that has been deleted and that space written over again but the file name is still available during a search using recovery tools?
I recently permanently deleted several e-mails from the deleted file and need to recover them. I have seen different software packages claiming to do this. I am not a Geek (no ofense) and just have basic computer skills. My question - are these softward applications easy to use or do you need to to have higher skill levels? Is is safe to download directly from the internet?
i accidently deleted my program files, because first i had vista x86 then i got vista x64. i installed both on the same hardisk. So there were two program files folders 1)program files, 2)program files(x86). in confusion i delt no. 1. so any way of getting those programs back from vista cdo or any othere source.
Deleted files don't go into recycle bin, when I deleted files..they seemed to be deleted permanently without going to recycle bin first. How do I fix this problem? I'm using Vista home premium 32 bit. And I really hate the vista
I started a backup on my computer but then it stopped because i didn't have enough space. I found the files and deleted them because it was slowing down my computer. After I did this, I read something that said don't delete backup files because it could potentially create problems with the backup and restore process in the future. Does anyone know how i can find out if I deleted an important file/files?
My darling sister has deleted all of my musc files (over a thousand). Instead of choosing to send them to the Recycle Bin, which I could fix, she chose to delete them.
I have a 1 month old 0.5TB USB external drive that I use to backup all my data, work, personal stuff, etc - 10 years of my life. I am running vista ultimate. WHen vista starts and the usb is plugged in it usually asks if you would like to check for consistency and gives you about 10 seconds to cancel the check (by pressing any key). I was walking towards the computer but was too late and windows went ahead and checked for consistency.......
I got a file that i want to delete but now my computer for some reason wont let me delete it anymore, now it says that there is an error with the RUNDLL32 file? sorry newb, anyway so i've scanned these files thinking theirs a virus covered up and nothing shown up, so im thinking its just the file itself has messed itself up..
I somehow lost the association for windows to automatically launch gif, jpeg and other image fomats to go to the vista default image viewer. Where is the location of that very default vista image viewer? What's its name too??
I have an issue that I have just notied several files that I deleted over a month ago are still visible when doing searches on my computer. When trying to delete that I'm told that it is "no longer located in" the folder it was.
When looking in the original folder the files were in they are not visible.
They can only be seen when doing a search. Does anyone know how to completely get rid of them?
I believe this should happen automatically, but it does not appear to have worked as it was a long time ago that I originally deleted them.
when i click on a file to delete it, it comes up with this ---> "The... folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted."
I think I have deleted these files a while ago but when i search for them they show up as 0 bytes.
I tried - creating a new folder with the same name and putting those files in and then deleting them, but doesn't work. I tried Hijack this and delete on reboot, can't open as file does not exist for deletion.
here is the deal I had to use my recovery disk that came with my computer because the BOTTMGR file got deleted and it would not even get to the main windows screen. Ok so since I did that I cannot find ANY of my other files like pictures or my poems ect... How can I get my old files back?
I had a problem with a virus. My anti-virus deleted a file named "wininet.dll". The only way i could solve the problem was instaling again te vista. But now i have two versions of it. With the second version i repaired the first one and i want to keep it because i have all the software installed on it. How can i uninstall te second version?
I know about FAT32, but I know little about NTFS. Assuming both hard drives are not "fragmented". If a large (200MB) file is deleted, is it more likely to be overwritten (space it occupied on the hard disk is overwritten) on a FAT32 hard disk compared to a NTFS? Remove "ine" from my email address
I've been trying to get rid of one of those pernicious programs that I inadvertantly downloaded when I attempted to download a file that purported to be an explanation of the COMDLG32.OCX. Its one of those PC scan programs, I did a search on it and deleted every file that I could find, but since Vista doesn't have a feature to remove programs I guess that I'll have to find another way.
