After two days and reading many, many threads, I finally got to the place where I can see both my XP desktop and my vista laptop on the network full map display. There are dotted lines from both computers to the router. However, the XP desktop doesn't show up when I choose computers and devices or under network.
View 4 RepliesI have an HP dv6500 laptop running Vista Home Premium. Suddenly the CD ROM has quit working. It doesn't show on My Computer and at one time I got an error 39. I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. When I put a CD in the drive the light will come on like it's reading but then goes off and it does nothing.

This is for any site, I've tried google news, msn news, everything. If I click the down button on the orange rss button, it shows feeds, but when I click on any of them, I get the page of code.

I need to give a presentation in July. Can the Premium version be used to do a presentation? Or do I need a program like Power Point. My other interest in Premium is the ability to save slide shows to DVD. Basic doesn't have that feature.

View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I removed my ATI Radeon X800Pro card because it caused graphics issues. I rebooted the computer and it automatically switched to the nvidia GeForce 6100 GPU onboard graphics. It had a fairly updated Windows driver installed for it. I went to nvidia to download the newest driver. During the installation of that driver, the screen went blank. I waited 5 minutes and nothing happened. I restarted my pc and now it doesn't show the Vista log-in screen anymore. All I get is that little green bar on the bottom and then the screen turns black. All I can see is a tiny little green strip (of the log-in page) on the top of my screen. How can I fix that? I still got XP, which I am using right now. I tried to boot Vista in Safe mode but it got stuck while it was loading the drivers...
View 7 Replies View RelatedIn the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI use the Pictures folder alot on my Vista based computer, and recently I was sorting through some of the pictures, deciding which ones to keep and which to delete. Most of these I have copied from my digital camera, and some I have downloaded from the web. Well, after having gone through them all, there is at least one in particular that I cannot seem to delete. I don't want it to just be sent to the Recycle Bin, but completely erased from the computer. I have discounted any viruses or spyware, and checked all my 'Folder' settings, but nothing I can think of to do will remove this file from the folder. It also does not actually show up in normal viewing, only if i do a search using special variables. It only shows up if I type, "*.jpg" into the search bar when I am viewing the directory. I can't however do anything with the file. I can't move it, I can't rename it, and while it shows a thumbnail image of the photo, when I click on it to open it, the picture viewer shows no photo-representation. I also can't replace it with another file with the same exact name. How do I permanently remove this one file? And how did it get to the point of being undeletable. File properties do not show that it is 'hidden' or 'read only'.

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust copied some new jpgs from my card reader to a folder full of jpgs from the same card, same camera, same card reader - and they show up as the Photoshop icon instead of picture preview. ALL other pictures in the folder show the picture preview. The card reader folder shows the pictures too! Opened a picture and edited it in Photoshop then saved it as a jpg with a new name and IT doesn't show the picture preview. I cleared the thumbnail cache - no joy. Maddening! Running 64 bit Vista on a Pemium HDX HP laptop. I apologize if this has been covered in here somewhere before but I couldn't find anything (other than clearing the thumbnail cache, but that was a bust). when opening the folder for the first time after a reboot, the picture previews flash for a nanosecond then revert to the Photoshop icon.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI read another thread and it mentions that I should use the system recovery. I put in my Vista DVD, and chose it but it doesn't show any OS (which is not surprising). I don't know where the drivers are though, should I try repair without any, find them (with your help if you know where they are) or install Vista again (will all my files still be there?)

Anytime I open my c: drive this file doesn't show up. How do I access this folder? It keeps making more viruses as fast as it is deleting them.

However, the update history shows Service Pack 1 updated, Service Pack 2 doesn't show up as to be downloaded. Further, when I click START > Right click COMPUTER, I understood below display of my Vista version that it should display Service Pack installs, but Service Pack 1 isn't displaying there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just recently encountered a problem connecting to the internet with my notebook and when I check to see what was wrong my computer says I'm not connected to any networks. So when I try to connect my computer doesn't show my wireless network it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter 'local area connection". However everything is plugged in and my mom's notebook has no problem. Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device is working properly. I don't know what to do anymore. I've restarted my computer and unplugged and replugged the cable and disabled and enabled the adapter.

I have searched my computer and the search cannot find this document. Windows explorer doesn't even show a Temporary Internet Files subfolder in the Windows folder. Can anyone explain what is going on here? I don't appreciate Microsoft retaining information on my computer that I am unaware of. Can I get rid of this attachment without deleting the email?

Since the Programs menu (classic start menu setup) looks like an overflowing junk room after everything gets installed, I made it tidier by getting rid of some shortcuts that weren't needed and organizing others in easy to manage category folders. I was able to create all the folders I needed in ...All Users...Start MenuPrograms, but a folder named "Programs" doesn't show up among the other folders when I go to Start > Programs. Since I've never had any problems before with a sub folder by the same name as the folder above it in hierarchy, I'm thinking this might be a bug. When I check with Windows Explorer, the ...All Users...Start MenuProgramsPrograms folder is there along with all the shortcuts that have been put in it, but it's just not showing up on the Start menu. All the other folders I created such as Utilities, Graphics, Multimedia and Internet do show in Start > Programs along with all the shortcuts I put in them.

I tried it but i cant for the life of me see any real point in it , ive had cpu monitors in there , bandwidth monitors disk usage stats the weather even linked it up to Everest pro edition and still found it a waste of time , i cant even see it for 99% of the time cos who ever stares at their desktop? Open an app and its gone , or set it to display on top of all windows and it just becomes a pain thats always in the way?? Am i missing something? View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Basic upgraded to Home Premium. For some time I have not been able to set a picture as my background. If I set a picture as my background it does not show on my desktop. All I have is a solid colour which I can change. If I use the switch between windows feature of Aero I can see the background but only after I have selected my desktop from the available windows and use the switch between windows feature again. The picture never shows up on my desktop. I did have a problem with Aero at one time when it would load up when I boot up but as soon as my desktop loaded Aero stopped working. I did get this sorted out by uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics card. I hope this makes sense. I know it is not a big problem but I would just like to be able to set a picture as my background.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.

Preview of the Pic should be there right?
When I select a pic for my desktop background from Personalize>Desktop Background, if I select Center the top and bottom of the pic are off the screen. I know there have been previous threads on this, but the answers there didn't solve my problem. It has been suggested that it is related to resolution, but I am running 1650x1080 and the pic is 1488x1984 jpg.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to use remote desktop to access my home desktop pc from on the road. I'm running Vista HPx64. Of course it doesn't support terminal server. There is however a little reg hack out there that will make it work. (Just google "remote desktop on vista home premium" and visit the first link) So! I run the little hack thing, and it works. it starts the service, and I can now RDP into my desktop from my laptop.
When I login to the remote desktop session from my laptop, it doesn't show the proper desktop profile on my desktop. Example, right now I'm typing this on my desktop. Firefox is open with several tabs, one of them being this forum post. So, if I were to open a remote desktop session from my laptop right now. I would login using the same account, my main administrator account, I would get a blank desktop..............

One of my friends has a media sharing problem with an XP Home (sp3) MCE 2005, WMP 11 desktop. I've tried to help him by setting up consistent user accounts (passworded) but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. In a nutshell, his network shows his desktop as both a computer and a media device and it seems he has more shares than I think is wise -- he has disks, folders, files, all marked as share with full control permissions to everyone. He also has tried to solve his problem by consolidating media, but put it all in the "all users" tree instead of with a single user. In short, I'm not sure what he has shared and where he has it.
As a result his music and pix seem to share on the network ok, but he gets duplicate entries in wmp and conflicts when trying to stream video on his network. Maybe this last problem is because of multiple shared videos with the same name maybe in multiple locations (or as multiple users)? So here are my two questions. First, is there an easy way I can help him turn off all sharing and start over? And second, does it matter that his desktop shows up as a media device AND as a computer? If so, how can he fix that problem?
