I've recently helped a friend set up his laptop with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. Since the Programs menu (classic start menu setup) looks like an overflowing junk room after everything gets installed, I made it tidier by getting rid of some shortcuts that weren't needed and organizing others in easy to manage category folders. I was able to create all the folders I needed in ...All Users...Start MenuPrograms, but a folder named "Programs" doesn't show up among the other folders when I go to Start > Programs. Since I've never had any problems before with a sub folder by the same name as the folder above it in hierarchy, I'm thinking this might be a bug. When I check with Windows Explorer, the ...All Users...Start MenuProgramsPrograms folder is there along with all the shortcuts that have been put in it, but it's just not showing up on the Start menu. All the other folders I created such as Utilities, Graphics, Multimedia and Internet do show in Start > Programs along with all the shortcuts I put in them.
I'm looking to put shortcuts to each of my primary hard drives in the circled pane. I'm pretty sure it's possible and all I have to do is modify a system file or some ****, but where would I go about doing such a thing?
Above picture isn't mine, due to my print screen not working, but I have near all of the right panes contents off (via Start Menu Properties), thus why I'm wanting to put my own custom shortcuts there.
Windows Vista has a new search bar located on the Start Panel. You can use the new search box to find items in the various folders of your Start Menu as well as run any application from it. Just type in the name of the executable and it will search your hard drive for it and run it. This is a great feature but if you have a lot of files on your computer, then be prepared for a short delay since it may have to search for a while.
If you do not want to wait that long, there is a quick way to get the old Run command back on your Start Panel....
Two days ago I deleted a few shortcuts from my desktop, now everytime I even try to go to IE, a windows pops up asking me which program do I want to use to open IE - this is happening everytime I try to open a new window and for exapmple i want to go to Google... Also, one of the shortcuts i deleted is Skype, now if I try to open Skype from the icon I have on the bottom toolbar or form the Start menu, a window pops up saying that it doesn't recognise the program - any ideas of what I've done wrong and if there is a solution??
I downloaded a highly rated registry cleaner from CNET (download.com) and ran it on my Vista Ultimate (x32) laptop. When I rebooted many of the programs I had installed were missing from the start menu. All the programs are still there in C:/Programs but the folder listings are all gone in the start menu. Is there a way to restore all these? I did a system restore but that didn't fix the Start menu issue.
I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.

I have an HP dv6500 laptop running Vista Home Premium. Suddenly the CD ROM has quit working. It doesn't show on My Computer and at one time I got an error 39. I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. When I put a CD in the drive the light will come on like it's reading but then goes off and it does nothing.
Whenever i click on the feed button in IE, it doesn't show a list of available feeds, I just gives me a page of html/xml code. This is for any site, I've tried google news, msn news, everything. If I click the down button on the orange rss button, it shows feeds, but when I click on any of them, I get the page of code.
Currently I am using Vista Basic. It can make slide shows, but they are visible only on the computer they're created on and with limited control. I need to give a presentation in July. Can the Premium version be used to do a presentation? Or do I need a program like Power Point. My other interest in Premium is the ability to save slide shows to DVD. Basic doesn't have that feature.
When I click on Contracts in Vista Mail they all look ok. I have names of those I sent to often, and then I have sub-folders, i.e., family, friend, business, etc. But when I go to send a message and try to select the people I want to send to "ALL" of the name I have in both the list and those in the subfolders all show up on the list. Is there anyway I can get the ones in the sub-folders not to show up. Like I was able to do in OE.
When you change the desktop background picture there is a drop down menu "Picture Location". I have a few paths that I do not want to show up on the drop menu. My question is: How do I get rid of some of the folders that are currently on that list? I want them off that list only.
I have Vista Home Premium. SP1 doesn't show up on automatic updates, and I can't find it to download manually? I read here that it was available yesterday.
Yesterday I removed my ATI Radeon X800Pro card because it caused graphics issues. I rebooted the computer and it automatically switched to the nvidia GeForce 6100 GPU onboard graphics. It had a fairly updated Windows driver installed for it. I went to nvidia to download the newest driver. During the installation of that driver, the screen went blank. I waited 5 minutes and nothing happened. I restarted my pc and now it doesn't show the Vista log-in screen anymore. All I get is that little green bar on the bottom and then the screen turns black. All I can see is a tiny little green strip (of the log-in page) on the top of my screen. How can I fix that? I still got XP, which I am using right now. I tried to boot Vista in Safe mode but it got stuck while it was loading the drivers...
In the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?
After two days and reading many, many threads, I finally got to the place where I can see both my XP desktop and my vista laptop on the network full map display. There are dotted lines from both computers to the router. However, the XP desktop doesn't show up when I choose computers and devices or under network.
I use the Pictures folder alot on my Vista based computer, and recently I was sorting through some of the pictures, deciding which ones to keep and which to delete. Most of these I have copied from my digital camera, and some I have downloaded from the web. Well, after having gone through them all, there is at least one in particular that I cannot seem to delete. I don't want it to just be sent to the Recycle Bin, but completely erased from the computer. I have discounted any viruses or spyware, and checked all my 'Folder' settings, but nothing I can think of to do will remove this file from the folder. It also does not actually show up in normal viewing, only if i do a search using special variables. It only shows up if I type, "*.jpg" into the search bar when I am viewing the directory. I can't however do anything with the file. I can't move it, I can't rename it, and while it shows a thumbnail image of the photo, when I click on it to open it, the picture viewer shows no photo-representation. I also can't replace it with another file with the same exact name. How do I permanently remove this one file? And how did it get to the point of being undeletable. File properties do not show that it is 'hidden' or 'read only'.
After upgrading my notebook with new video driver, the index doesn't show sub-classes, but only the total index 3.1 Plus Aero isn't anymore an option !
Just copied some new jpgs from my card reader to a folder full of jpgs from the same card, same camera, same card reader - and they show up as the Photoshop icon instead of picture preview. ALL other pictures in the folder show the picture preview. The card reader folder shows the pictures too! Opened a picture and edited it in Photoshop then saved it as a jpg with a new name and IT doesn't show the picture preview. I cleared the thumbnail cache - no joy. Maddening! Running 64 bit Vista on a Pemium HDX HP laptop. I apologize if this has been covered in here somewhere before but I couldn't find anything (other than clearing the thumbnail cache, but that was a bust). when opening the folder for the first time after a reboot, the picture previews flash for a nanosecond then revert to the Photoshop icon.
I use Explorer in classic view. When I use the Folder Options dialog to change the options to show hidden files or system files, the change is applied in the file pane but not in the folder pane. To get it to apply there I have to close Explorer and restart it. Is there a way to get this to work right?
I read another thread and it mentions that I should use the system recovery. I put in my Vista DVD, and chose it but it doesn't show any OS (which is not surprising). I don't know where the drivers are though, should I try repair without any, find them (with your help if you know where they are) or install Vista again (will all my files still be there?)
I have a clean verson of vista home. I just ran my mcafee virus scan and it is finding 1,000's of virus's in the folder c:/documents and settings. Anytime I open my c: drive this file doesn't show up. How do I access this folder? It keeps making more viruses as fast as it is deleting them.
I recently got high-speed internet and was able to finally take advantage of a lot of Vista updates. However, the update history shows Service Pack 1 updated, Service Pack 2 doesn't show up as to be downloaded. Further, when I click START > Right click COMPUTER, I understood below display of my Vista version that it should display Service Pack installs, but Service Pack 1 isn't displaying there.
i have a computer with only 512 mb, so i decided to buy some new ram, i got it today and bought a 1gb memory, after i put it inside my computer, i switched on my computer and it says 510 mb in task manager 238 mb cached, and 1 free, how come it doesn't show 1.5 gb in the physical memory bit under the performance part?
I have Vista 32 bit, intel core2 duo t7250 processor,3gb ram, nvidia 8600m dell xps 1530 laptop. My friend also has ame lappy. His system works perfectly fine, but my system is too slow. There is lag in simple operations also like there in a lag of 1-3 seconds in opening folders,it always takes to load/show all data in the folders. This problem is still persists even after i have disabled all unneccesary stuffs.
I'm running a laptop with Vista Home Premium, and just recently some of my folders like My Computer and other various folders are opening yet show a blank window, like literally blank. There's not even a URL there, just a blank window. I played around with some registry values (which I shouldn't have) and I believe that's the cause of this problem. Also, when i try to delete some of the files inside folders that manage to open before they crash, the delete prompt stalls at 0. Explorer.exe also seems to have multiple holds on single processes. how get my comp back to shape! (Ps. Did like 3 system restores and a virus scan with no results)
Vista Home Prem 32bit..... I used the "search" feature to look for something and the results displayed several Folders & Files I had deleted some time back. When I right clicked on these items that had been deleled...I got the message, The item cannot be found.....make sure the Folder exists....check that the path is correct.....Or similar words. I would expect to see the message appear appear because the items don't exist.....but why did the search display them? Is there a way to clean emove them so they don't show up on future Searches?
