Disappearing Desktop Files

It had Vista Home Premium installed on it. She has been using the computer to store school-related documents; class notes, chapter reviews, etc. She turned the computer on this morning, and all of her desktop folders with the school-related documents were gone. I searched for the files and found them in her C drive, under her username and AppData. No matter what I do, I can't seem to pull those files out or view them. I tried ShadowExplorer and that did not
What I think happened is that in switching between two networks (one at home and one at school) her desktop files were relocated from her C drive to the school network. I don't know how that happened or if that is even possible. She often does not shutdown her computer when she leaves school. So, as I have seen in the past, her Dell cannot connect to the school network, but no errors come up as she edits documents and saves those changes. Is there anything I'm missing here? Could there be a simpler solution? Could some files have been corrupted and are those files lost for good?

After I turn on, it all settles down, then at various points, usually either when I turn on Explorer or Messenger, I loose the taskbar, desktop and start menu and cant get them back. Sometimes though it happens almost as soon as everything first appears but I have found that the longer I dont do any actions, the longer it lasts when I start using it. Im about to throw the computer out the window, but im not technically minded so maybe its something simple. I also signed up with Norton not long before this trouble all happened but this was after some virus that has been removed got in through messenger - could this be related?

I have run into a problem, that is I can download zip files (i.e. I can see them coming across the network with device manager and see them building up in the download window and see the file name and part name in the destination directory) but when the download completes the part file disappears and the working file has zero bytes in it.

I am absolutely going mad trying to fix this. I have purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed ( I am a Vista novice BTW). Created a new profile for my partner ( mine is set up as the administrator) and transferred some pictures to the Desktop. Few days later I couldn't see the folder containing the pictures on the desktop; I tracked it back through the explorer. I transfer them to the documents folder ad The next time it is completely disappeared. Same happened with my pictures later on in my profile. I have searched the pictures everywhere, nothing and of course I have not deleted them, but they seem disappeared. I have tried a recovery software and nothing. Now, recoveing pictures would be good, but avoiding this happening again is my main concern.
I have also noticed that when downloading the software I use looses the link to the folder where the files are stored. it seems there is something wrong with the default folders set up in my profile (Documents, downloads, Pictures and so on).

I've seen this problem posted a number of times, and either there's no fix for it or it was attributed to something that doesn't apply to my situation. Here's the description:
- With Firefox and Google Talk, any downloaded file cannot be opened by the program.
- IE8 and Chrome both work, and since I use Chrome for everything, I never noticed the issue in Firefox. File transfer in Google Talk has been screwed since I installed Vista.
- It happens when they're run in Administrator Mode as well
- The files do not appear in the specified Download directory (my UserDownload folder)
- A search shows that the files do not exist -anywhere- on any of my HDs
- The files aren't in AppDataTemp either
- I do NOT have AVG, nor have I ever had it installed on any of my HDs, ever
- The account I use is the original account I created on install, and has Administrator privileges
- I have already granted special permissions for all Users to Create/Modify files within the folder
- The User folders are not in their original location. They've been moved to a separate HD specifically for Docs/Downloads.
The most common answer I see is "Turn off UAC," but I see that as a last resort and would prefer a different solution. I'm tempted to just switch to 7 today and deal with the RC but I'm wary of the problem not being fixed there either.

I just bought this new ASUS laptop and it's amazing. It runs a Windows Vista Home Permium 64-bit version. However, one problem I am facing since the first time I opened the laptop is that files don't appear on the desktop. They are there because I tried to copy a file twice to the desktop and I was told that there is already a file. I tried to look for posts here but couldn't find anything that went through the same issue. Sometimes when the laptop first loads the files on the desktop appear but only for several seconds and then they go away again. Does any1 know a solution to the problem ?

I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer. I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.
I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!

i have on my desktop a 0 kb file with no extension (.exe etc) yes none ..when i try to delete it it says file cannot be found... i restart the comp and its still there... any idea on how to get rid of it

I have a new laptop with installed vista. I noticed twice that vista deliberately deleted files on the desktop. I tried to do system restore. It took its time to start and then failed.

In the network connection sharing, i see both me and my wifes laptop on the full map on her computer and my computer. I can not accessed shared files or desktop remote connection. I do have file sharing on and both computers are set on the same workgroup. All firewalls are configured and i've tried it with all firewalls turned off (vista firewall and gateway firewall).

Recently I've noticed that when I right click on certain files or the desktop, that it would load the context menu after about 1 second. I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small. I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly. My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu.

I have tried on two pcs (I only have vista pcs now) with two different user accounts but with no success the posts have never been downloaded or displayed or deleted, they just dont exist as far as mail is concerned I have downloaded thunderbird and the messages appear as they should. I dont like thunderbird, I find it difficult and unintuitive, but at least it works

I recently got a new computer that had a 70GB HD. I've been using it for a few months, adding pictures and downloading a few things periodically. Primarily it's been used for surfing the net and checking e-mail, light stuff. However, I'm down to about 27GBs and have not added nowhere near 43GBs worth ofmaterial to the PC. Any idea where the memory has gone and how I can get it back? I have checked the temp files and internet files as well and they are long gone

Since Saturday my emails that I have read and kept in my inbox have disappeared. In fact anything more than 3 days old is gone also. They are not in the deleted folder either.

I have Nvidia 8800Gt Up-to-date Drivers 1tb Hd Runnign Vista Ulti 32 and i just applied a crap load of patches last night and then Sp2 about a hour ago. And now Aero disappeared, Checked Services and all that jazz, everything is running. Already redid my score. Every time i try a Theme the uses Aero i get Windows Classic. Along with SP2 Windows Poweshell was installed, could that be messing it up? I dont have anything but updates recently installed. no incompatibility programs. I heard that sometimes when u apply Service patches ur Serial can mess up and might need re-activation? Cuz i remember before i bought a Ultimate Serial after the time limit i couldn't use Aero. I upgraded from Basic to Ulti. So yea, Checked the services, did the score, checked reg, checked processes, and tried most of things suggested on the forums.

The problem now is that when he clicks on an mp3 or doc file (those are the ones I was able to check) when on the net with internet explorer 7 the download disappears. It pops up with the window to download the file. I removed the check in the "close window when complete" (or whatever it says). You can watch it download the file but when the download is finished the window closes. When you go to the appropriate folder nothing is there. I have even searched the computer with the file name and nothing. It doesn't even attempt to open media player (11) to play the file. He said both the mp3 and pdf issue started at the same time (don't know if that is coincidence or not) and was surprised when I pointed out the same thing with the doc file and no attempt made by computer to open Word. I did download firefox and clicked on an mp3 file and it played fine. Thinking we just needed to repair IE7 I went to M$ site and quickly learned that you cannot download ie7 if you already have it on your computer.

One day I was on the internet and when I closed it I noticed that my icons were gone. I was like wtf. I unclicked show icons and clicked it again and they call came up but in a different way than what I had them. So i spent some time arranging them the way they were. Now everytime I start up my computer they are gone. I do the same procedure but I dont have to rearrange them they are in the right spot. I have searched and came across a guy with the same problem but no one has helped him and it was asked like over a year ago. I did virus checks, updated my virus programs, reset icon cache, and refreshed it. None of the tips worked. I dont want to have to do this everytime I start my computer.

I was looking around at settings The change allowed me to look at several restored down windows back and forth simply by hovering the mouse overtop. That all works fine unless I have only one window open. As soon as the mouse moves off the page it disappears into the taskbar. It is difficult to get the window from the taskbar to the screen and get my mouse on it all at the same time to keep it there. I have looked though every setting on the Logitech/Setpoint download that came with my wireless mouse and can't find it there. I am not sure where else to look. I'm using Vista Home Premium 32 bit that came with my HP Pavilion dv 9000 laptop.

why any system restore point that I (or the system) create disappears as soon as my PC is restarted/rebooted? I'm not dual booting. I'm not using Norton (am using Kaspersky and restore is in the list of trusted applications). There is 300 gig spare on the HD. Restore is enabled on my HD. I couldn't see an answer in the "bertk" links posted on similar threads.

quick launch was working OK btu then yesterday suddenly my machien froze and the quick launch disappeared. I restarted my machine and yet it was still missing. the odd thing was all my logins and passwords were dleted as well. i went to the properties section and ticked quick launch hit apply nothing happened. it ok and still nothing happened. so i went back into properties and it was untick even though i had ticked it hit apply and ok. it seems it will not register the accpetance. i have restarted my machine several times
btu nothi seems to bring it back

I cannot download anything from the internet. I have tried all the suggestions I have found and still no luck. I have made sure that file download is on, I have tried unsuccessfully to system restore, I have turned off Windows fire wall and defender, I changed the user setting, I tried to uninstall windows defender, but Vista won't let me.I reset the internet settings. I am at my wit's end. This started happening right after I downloaded Norton. From what I can see from the different forums I've been to, no one seems sure if it is a Vista problem or a Norton problem. The only good thing so far is that my computer is a lot faster
now that Windows defender and fire wall is off. I can't even download Windows7.

I have a Gateway Desktop model GM563E with a Vista Home Premium operating system. After installing Vista update 938371 released 4/8/08, my mouse pointer disappeared (while keyboard functions still worked). Changing mouse settings and installing a new mouse did not remedy the problem. I needed to do a system restore and remove the Vista update to make the pointer work again. Has anyone else had this problem?

I find that when I have a message in the outbox and the message is no longer "unread," it disappears regardless of whether it was sent! I believe this is the cause for two current problems:
1. everytime I close Windows Mail, I receive the message "You have unsent messages in your Outbox. Do you want to send them now?" Of course I always click "yes," but the truth is there are no messages in my outbox, and even if I click yes, I will be given the same message if I open and close Windows Mail again. It is chronic!
2. I cannot be sure if a message was actually sent after it's been read and disappears from my outbox. Just this morning, I read a message in my outbox. It became "read," then it disappeared. When I hit send/receive, it successfully "sent" the message according to the action item, but then it failed to move the message from my outbox to the sent folder. So now the mail has disappeared and I have no record of it ever being in existence.
