Icons Disappearing
Aug 12, 2008I have tried rebuilding the Icon cache, but this didnt quite work for me.
Is it because im using 32 bit?
my icons are like disappearing and i have no idea what to do.

Disappearing Icons
Jul 25, 2009One day I was on the internet and when I closed it I noticed that my icons were gone. I was like wtf. I unclicked show icons and clicked it again and they call came up but in a different way than what I had them. So i spent some time arranging them the way they were. Now everytime I start up my computer they are gone. I do the same procedure but I dont have to rearrange them they are in the right spot. I have searched and came across a guy with the same problem but no one has helped him and it was asked like over a year ago. I did virus checks, updated my virus programs, reset icon cache, and refreshed it. None of the tips worked. I dont want to have to do this everytime I start my computer.

May 26, 2009all my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons,after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr,windows vista programs,almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.

Mar 23, 2008All of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?

Mar 6, 2009Desktop icons overwritten. After a recent automatic update it appears my desktop icons have two icons on top of each other. Visible on top is the "default" icon and slightly visible underneath is the original icon. I use Firefox and Vista Ultimate 32.

May 12, 2009A Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........

Feb 8, 2009I have tried on two pcs (I only have vista pcs now) with two different user accounts but with no success the posts have never been downloaded or displayed or deleted, they just dont exist as far as mail is concerned I have downloaded thunderbird and the messages appear as they should. I dont like thunderbird, I find it difficult and unintuitive, but at least it works

Mar 23, 2008I recently got a new computer that had a 70GB HD. I've been using it for a few months, adding pictures and downloading a few things periodically. Primarily it's been used for surfing the net and checking e-mail, light stuff. However, I'm down to about 27GBs and have not added nowhere near 43GBs worth ofmaterial to the PC. Any idea where the memory has gone and how I can get it back? I have checked the temp files and internet files as well and they are long gone

Sep 4, 2009I have Nvidia 8800Gt Up-to-date Drivers 1tb Hd Runnign Vista Ulti 32 and i just applied a crap load of patches last night and then Sp2 about a hour ago. And now Aero disappeared, Checked Services and all that jazz, everything is running. Already redid my score. Every time i try a Theme the uses Aero i get Windows Classic. Along with SP2 Windows Poweshell was installed, could that be messing it up? I dont have anything but updates recently installed. no incompatibility programs. I heard that sometimes when u apply Service patches ur Serial can mess up and might need re-activation? Cuz i remember before i bought a Ultimate Serial after the time limit i couldn't use Aero. I upgraded from Basic to Ulti. So yea, Checked the services, did the score, checked reg, checked processes, and tried most of things suggested on the forums.

Jun 21, 2008The problem now is that when he clicks on an mp3 or doc file (those are the ones I was able to check) when on the net with internet explorer 7 the download disappears. It pops up with the window to download the file. I removed the check in the "close window when complete" (or whatever it says). You can watch it download the file but when the download is finished the window closes. When you go to the appropriate folder nothing is there. I have even searched the computer with the file name and nothing. It doesn't even attempt to open media player (11) to play the file. He said both the mp3 and pdf issue started at the same time (don't know if that is coincidence or not) and was surprised when I pointed out the same thing with the doc file and no attempt made by computer to open Word. I did download firefox and clicked on an mp3 file and it played fine. Thinking we just needed to repair IE7 I went to M$ site and quickly learned that you cannot download ie7 if you already have it on your computer.

Mar 23, 2009I was looking around at settings The change allowed me to look at several restored down windows back and forth simply by hovering the mouse overtop. That all works fine unless I have only one window open. As soon as the mouse moves off the page it disappears into the taskbar. It is difficult to get the window from the taskbar to the screen and get my mouse on it all at the same time to keep it there. I have looked though every setting on the Logitech/Setpoint download that came with my wireless mouse and can't find it there. I am not sure where else to look. I'm using Vista Home Premium 32 bit that came with my HP Pavilion dv 9000 laptop.

May 30, 2008I've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

Mar 24, 2009So I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
Zip Files After Download Disappearing
Sep 20, 2009I have run into a problem, that is I can download zip files (i.e. I can see them coming across the network with device manager and see them building up in the download window and see the file name and part name in the destination directory) but when the download completes the part file disappears and the working file has zero bytes in it.

I'm not using Norton (am using Kaspersky and restore is in the list of trusted applications). There is 300 gig spare on the HD. Restore is enabled on my HD. Mar 27, 2008quick launch was working OK btu then yesterday suddenly my machien froze and the quick launch disappeared. I restarted my machine and yet it was still missing. the odd thing was all my logins and passwords were dleted as well. i went to the properties section and ticked quick launch hit apply nothing happened. it ok and still nothing happened. so i went back into properties and it was untick even though i had ticked it hit apply and ok. it seems it will not register the accpetance. i have restarted my machine several times

Disappearing Pictures And Files
Jul 29, 2009I am absolutely going mad trying to fix this. I have purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed ( I am a Vista novice BTW). Created a new profile for my partner ( mine is set up as the administrator) and transferred some pictures to the Desktop. Few days later I couldn't see the folder containing the pictures on the desktop; I tracked it back through the explorer. I transfer them to the documents folder ad The next time it is completely disappeared. Same happened with my pictures later on in my profile. I have searched the pictures everywhere, nothing and of course I have not deleted them, but they seem disappeared. I have tried a recovery software and nothing. Now, recoveing pictures would be good, but avoiding this happening again is my main concern.
I have also noticed that when downloading the software I use looses the link to the folder where the files are stored. it seems there is something wrong with the default folders set up in my profile (Documents, downloads, Pictures and so on).
Internet : Disappearing Downloads
Feb 14, 2009I cannot download anything from the internet. I have tried all the suggestions I have found and still no luck. I have made sure that file download is on, I have tried unsuccessfully to system restore, I have turned off Windows fire wall and defender, I changed the user setting, I tried to uninstall windows defender, but Vista won't let me.I reset the internet settings. I am at my wit's end. This started happening right after I downloaded Norton. From what I can see from the different forums I've been to, no one seems sure if it is a Vista problem or a Norton problem. The only good thing so far is that my computer is a lot faster
now that Windows defender and fire wall is off. I can't even download Windows7.
Disappearing Mouse Pointer
Apr 11, 2008I have a Gateway Desktop model GM563E with a Vista Home Premium operating system. After installing Vista update 938371 released 4/8/08, my mouse pointer disappeared (while keyboard functions still worked). Changing mouse settings and installing a new mouse did not remedy the problem. I needed to do a system restore and remove the Vista update to make the pointer work again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Mar 2, 2010I find that when I have a message in the outbox and the message is no longer "unread," it disappears regardless of whether it was sent! I believe this is the cause for two current problems:
1. everytime I close Windows Mail, I receive the message "You have unsent messages in your Outbox. Do you want to send them now?" Of course I always click "yes," but the truth is there are no messages in my outbox, and even if I click yes, I will be given the same message if I open and close Windows Mail again. It is chronic!
2. I cannot be sure if a message was actually sent after it's been read and disappears from my outbox. Just this morning, I read a message in my outbox. It became "read," then it disappeared. When I hit send/receive, it successfully "sent" the message according to the action item, but then it failed to move the message from my outbox to the sent folder. So now the mail has disappeared and I have no record of it ever being in existence.
Disappearing Restore Points.
Mar 23, 2008There's quite a lot about limited restore point history around, but just to add some more info of my own and to plead again for assistance! Since recently posting about how woefully few restore points I have I've been watching them... I think I racked up 5 or 6 (spanning a magnificent 4-5 days) and then all but one disappeared.Yesterday (27 Feb) 2 new restore points were created (between midnight and 1am) - one scheduled and then one as a result of a Windows Update. Then, between 03:20 and 05:00 I find 4 instance of volsnap helpfully reporting that "The oldest shadow copy of volume C: was deleted to keep disk space usage for shadow copies of volume C: below the user defined limit." - and then another two deletions at 16:45 and 23:28..............
