View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
I have the problem is I get this graphic corruption, partically when trying to play any full screen game. It also happens when I try a high resolution, like the native resolution on my Viewsonic 2235wm LCD, of 1680x1050. Its just a display corruption as the sound will work in a game, and you can even control the game as well, with the corrupt display happening. Here is a picture. Does anyone have a clue? I have all the latest drivers installed, Nvidia, Creative, the lot.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of building a PC, so I thought I'd try the ole Windows Vista 64-bit version for the machine. I've got for the machine, a Philips 22" 220CW8FB/05 LCD wide screen monitor, which has a nice display, really. As one does, I've calibrated said monitor and saved the settings, everything looked great. Experience tells me to be weary of what might happen, so I restarted the PC to see that my monitor's resolution and setting aren't displayed properly. The image is stretched vertically, the Start bar isn't even visible - until - I go Personalize > and adjust the resolution to something else, select No when asked if I'd like to keep it and hey presto, my monitor displays properly now. Problem is, I have to do that every single time I restart the machine. Currently, I've got just the drivers that come with my components CDs, I haven't been able to check on-line for other versions (but there isn't one for the monitor) for say the motherboard or graphics card, because in one of typically brilliant Windows moments™ (like when my mouse stopped working and it prompted me to "click here to fix the problem"), when I tried to install the -Vista compatible- modem, Vista said it wouldn't install it without a digital signature, and that I should go to the manufacturer's website for more information. I would. If I had a modem. So, in your humble opinion, which is the bigger waste of money currently? Vista or my monitor (twice as expensive as Vista)? Alternatively, any suggestions as to how I would be able to resolve the aforementioned conflict? I'd really like to keep both of them.PS. I guess it could also be a graphics card problem. It's French (not really, it's from Taiwan, an MSI NX8800GT).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like to put a little disclaimer out here: I know very little about computers. I can navigate my way around them as needed for personal/school usage. Outside of that, my knowledge is spotty. Most of the technical stuff I need done on my computer is done by my father over breaks/weekends, because I can't leave my laptop with the Tech guys at my school since I take notes for every class on it.
So now for the computer... Oi. The computer I have is a Dell Inspiron 1420. I got it back in May. It's running Vista Home Premium 32BIT, and I'm using Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (I don't know if that is relevant or not, but I'll include it just the same). Since I've gotten it, I've had more problems than I can count. The last problem I had before the current one (random BSODs), was a corrupt file on my computer (Dell Support Center). It wouldn't let me download or install anything, and I had to install SystemMechanic on my computer to get rid of the corrupt files/registries (I think. My father actually did this for me.) The SystemMechanic allowed me to uninstall/delete the corrupt file, and voila, it worked! For about two weeks.
Then I started getting blue screens of death. At first it was only one, and there were a few days/week and a half until I got another. And now, in the past two days, I've gotten at least two (I have left my computer sitting on my desk to do something and I have come back to find it "magically" rebooted and waiting for my login, or stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore).
I know that this has been covered in quite a few other threads, but I've yet to find a solution to my issue and am hoping someone may be able to assist me. I recently had to replace my desktop, which was using XP, with a new system that is running Vista. I know my way around a system fairly well, but I'm having trouble finding out how to make my on-screen volume meter return to me. I know it's a small issue, but it's driving me nuts! From what I've found on the net it seems fairly common in some models, but I've yet to see it addressed in mine. I'm using a Gatway, model DX4710-09. I SWEAR it was working when I first got it, but it disappeared. It bothered me so much that I actually did a clean install of Vista, to no avail. All of my drivers are current and I've uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard as well. I'm having a hard enough time getting used to Vista and it's quirks, and this is really a thorn in my side.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have my desktop set up the way I like it and have my icons grouped in different parts of the screen and in an order that I like. Every so often, something happens like an error or booting into safe mode that sends all my icons to be aligned together starting in the upper left of my screen. Then I have to put them back in order. There appears to be some order in which they're realigned, but the order isn't consistent between the groups. How can I create a backup of my desktop display so that I won't have to move every icon back into place manually? Is there a file somewhere that I can copy back into place when this happens?

Broadband speeds. I know it's easy to learn what the current speed at a
particular moment is by using one of the many people on the web providong
that service. What I cannot find and would find useful if I had it would be a
display - rather like the clock at the bottom RH corner, for instance. A
display that would show constantly what the speed is, or failing that, by
reacting to the cursor being on it.
Whenever I access a particular application, a message box tells me that "A program can't display a message on your desktop." The details on the message box say that there is a partial incompatibility with Vista. I can close the message box, but it continues to pop up every few minutes. The application program seems to work fine, however. The message box is just incredibly annoying!!! My Windows services are set for "Interactive Services" to use the "Manual" Startup Type, but the status is currently started. MY QUESTION: Is this simply a notification box only? Will stopping or disabling this service cause any security problems.... or will it simply halt the notifications?

Just installed vista x64 SP1 with all latest updates, installed latest Shark codecs and K-lite codecs. Have no problem playing video files in Media player, but the same video files are not properly played in MediaCenter. They blink from time to time. It looks like a problem with codec, but after installing Shark and K-lite codec packs the problem still the same. May be Media center gets different codec. How do I change it?
My second question is: How do you add extra programs to Media center in vista x64? In XP MCE 2005 you could just drag desired program to the start button and prop it there and it would end up in MCE. It doesn't allow to the same in Vista MCE. If you drag the program to start button it will open MCE, but you won't find the added program in MCE
In my normal old XP pro IE, I just click Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Files To be able to view and copy the temporary internet files, from IE. But with my vista, when i do the same thing, even though I have activated make hidden files visible, the temp inet folder appears empty. I assume they are present, but Just cannot see them. Can someone point me in the right direction to make them available to me... Also if anyone knows of any handy tools for managing the temp files let me know. I copy a ton of stuff frm the temp inet folder and its very cumbersome.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't have this annoyance in WinXP but I do in WinVista. It forgets recently opened text files for example, I have a daily "note" file which gets registered in "Recendly Opened Docs" (click Start-->Documents) for ONE sesssion, if I reboot or just work for many hours/next day it's not there and I have to go search in WinExplorer for the d*** file?
Please don't tell me to turn ON Taskbar options "store & display a list of recently open files/prgrams" - those options are both on, also I've been doing computers for decades.Something else is going on here, it's not my settings at fault.Plus, ironically Vista remembers a bunch of OLD files I opened ages ago and still listed as "recently opened" I am tired of looking up for files (in File System/WinExplorer) which I used
to open with TWO CLICKS in WinXP. Yes I can place them all in a conveniently accessible folder, but do NOT want to, it's user's right to keep files where user wants to, especially b/c duplicates/confusion would arise & my system is loaded with a Million files.
Had a virus on my computer. Friend of mine was able to wipe out my hardrive and start over, and reinstalled Vista, but my pc is not able to run vista properly. View 9 Replies View RelatedMicrosoft is currently running an ad campaign with a toddler performing complex editing tasks on Vista. The message is you are dumber than a three year old if you cannot get Vista to work properly. This ad is an insult to all levels of Vista users that reflects the hostility and contempt Microsoft's current regime has toward its customers. I don't think Bill Gates at his worst was that hostile to customers, just business competitors, which is an entirely different mindset. It must be Balmer. He is going to run Microsoft right into the ground. It hardly matters. If the future is in the clouds, and it likely is, then the OS is irrelevant anyway and it is just a matter of time before Google swallows Microsoft. I think Google would do a better job of running Microsoft than its current regime which seems to have the mentality of General Motors in the 1970s: they'll buy what we make regardless of quality or reliability.

(it even sees the one laptop which hasn't got NM on it) I must say I'm kinda disappointed that Vista and XP are not properly configured to automatically 'see' eachother and have to resort to a 3rd party to do so?
That aside I have three options
1 Dump Vista (my current fav ;-)
2 Solve this problem
3 Buy NM for home/work
If anyone has any input I'd love to see if no/ 2 can be cracked!
I suspect my problem is NOT a Vista problem as such, since the boot failure seems to occur before BIOS POST. If this is the case, then clearly this posting does not belong anywhere within Vista Forums and could therefor be deleted. However, in the hope that somebody can shed light on this problem, I will briefly explain the symptoms:
a) power-on
b) function buttons selection displayed
c) then, immediately windows boot manager displays a message, the essentials of which are: a recent hardware/software change might have installed an incorrectly signed or damaged file. it goes on to suggest: using a windows installation disk to repair computer or press enter to display the boot menu then f8 for advanced boot options and select last known good. It finishes the message with Status: 0xc0000428 Info: windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file I don't have an installation disk; pressing enter just reboots the computer and repeats the above message; I cannot access the recovery partition on the hard drive; I rely on Paragon drive backup but of course this is useless if the problem is pre-POST!!!

using an old DOS program that worked under XP, but doesn't appear to work properly in Vista. When I execute the program, it comes up with the error message "This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." My choices then are "Close" or "Ignore". Whichever option I click on, the program will then run, but in a miniscule window that I can't alter. how to get this to run in fullscreen like it did before?
