I have a persistent box popping up every four minutes that is entitled 'Interactive services dialog detection' and which says 'A program can't display a message on your desktop', but gives no means of dispensing with it. It happened after I tried opening Lavasoft's Ad Aware program. Never seen this before.
View 4 RepliesWhenever I access a particular application, a message box tells me that "A program can't display a message on your desktop." The details on the message box say that there is a partial incompatibility with Vista. I can close the message box, but it continues to pop up every few minutes. The application program seems to work fine, however. The message box is just incredibly annoying!!! My Windows services are set for "Interactive Services" to use the "Manual" Startup Type, but the status is currently started. MY QUESTION: Is this simply a notification box only? Will stopping or disabling this service cause any security problems.... or will it simply halt the notifications?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the latest updates one from HP and 2 from windows, both security and Vista update my cookie file no longer registers any. Mostly not a problem unless I am trying to get back to my ISP after researching something in the web, then I get a cannot display message and have to sign out and then back in again. What gives here? besides restoring to a time when these updates didn't exist? I may shoot this thing yet.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have my desktop set up the way I like it and have my icons grouped in different parts of the screen and in an order that I like. Every so often, something happens like an error or booting into safe mode that sends all my icons to be aligned together starting in the upper left of my screen. Then I have to put them back in order. There appears to be some order in which they're realigned, but the order isn't consistent between the groups. How can I create a backup of my desktop display so that I won't have to move every icon back into place manually? Is there a file somewhere that I can copy back into place when this happens?

Broadband speeds. I know it's easy to learn what the current speed at a
particular moment is by using one of the many people on the web providong
that service. What I cannot find and would find useful if I had it would be a
display - rather like the clock at the bottom RH corner, for instance. A
display that would show constantly what the speed is, or failing that, by
reacting to the cursor being on it.
What is the Vista equivalent to XP's?

And, is there a such thing as XP's "My Computer" icon in Vista?
I'm trying to change the way a wallpaper is displayed on the desktop (i.e. Stretch, Tile, Centred) but I can't. The wallpaper is always displayed stretched out and I can't change it to be tiled or centred.
The way I'm doing this (to no avail) is obviously to right-click the desktop, then choose "Personalize", then click on "Desktop Background", then click one of the three radio buttons at the bottom (in this case, either of the two on the right), then click "OK".

I logged into the Admin account right now, so surely i should be allowed to do this?
i downloaded the core temp file, and realized i already had another in Program Files. so i went about deleting the ones from the desktop, but there was an access denied message, even though i had confirmed the permission thru uac, and the properties of the coretemp app in security is full ownership to me full ownership:

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. "This computer can't connect to the remote computer."
when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.

The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI accidently hit some key combination that flip the display on my Vista laptop. Everything was upside down and the cursor moved in the opposite direction than what the physical moved. In other words, if I move mouse to right cursor moved to left. Not sure what keys I hit.
Left Hand: Maybe key or or or any two of these.
Right Hand: Maybe or or or
I did these keystrokes with one motion.
I had to use System Restore to get back to a normal display.
Can someone tell me what keys I hit and how to restore display?

View 9 Replies View RelatedPossibly not even a Vista problem, but this seems to be a pretty good resource overall so I was hoping somebody might have an idea what's wrong. I am running a pair of eVGA 7950 GT cards in SLI, no overclock anywhere, and I get a very odd display whenever I get into some kind of 3d game. I have attached a screenshot of HL2; however, this also happens in WoW so it's not game dependant. Any idea how I get rid of this crazy display? You can see there is some ghetto lettering that says SLI in the top left corner, and there is what could best be described as a green histogram along the left edge of the screen that "breathes" as the scene changes.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen starting up Vista, my display is always off to the left of the screen, meaning my start button is way off the screen and there's a black space on the right, like the display has simply been moved 2 inches to the left. I can fix it, by entering NVIDIA Control Panel and switch connector: back and forth between HDMI-HDTV (audio disabled) and HDMI - HDTV (audio enabled). but if the pc enters sleep or I reboot the problem is back.
Now I know the general problem because I had it with xp also, seems my monitor likes to tell my pc that it's a tv (I'm sorry I'm not into the tech lingo). And I've fixed it previously by changing codes in .ini files and ect. but I'd rather not do it on a new crisp clean first time install of Vista, anyone know of this problem and how to fix it for good?
I have a problem, for some reason when im playing games such as cod4 or gta4 or something. Il be playing fine for quite a long time, certainly a few hours but then randomly the screen will just stop, and the whole computer will freeze.
I noticed that on the frozen screen small parts of it had small purple lines going round them.
Well the only way to get out of this is to do a hard boot and start up my pc again.
Im wondering why this happens as i have all up to date drivers and my pc easily meets the requirements to play the games im playing.
I have two monitors: both work fine. However, somehow, while attempting to get the external monitor to display and not the laptop's monitor, I ended up with an extended view of the desktop on both. I don't need the desktop to be extended across both monitors.I simply want the external monitor to display the same thing as my laptop or have the laptop monitor be blank. I need an external monitor, because the screen on the laptop is cracked.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite and within one week of buying it at Best Buy, the screen cracked. (It was in a metal laptop case and did not sustain any trauma, so there is no reason for it to have cracked. Best Buy basically told me to stuff it and tried to charge me for an estimate when I brought it in for other problems with it. Toshiba has yet to respond to my letter about the problem.
All of a sudden the display on my computer got HUGE. i read the other discussions and used the screen resoulution to adjust it. It is small now but it apperars blurry or something.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI purchased a laptop with Vista Home Basic that had only 894 MB RAM.(Two slots with 512 MB sticks). I have lots of speed issues and was told by someone that this was not enough RAM to operate Vista. My laptop maximum it 2 GB so I swapped out the two 512 MB sticks for two 1 GB sticks. Under Control Panel>System, it is still only displaying 894 MB RAM. How do I get this to display the upgraded RAM?

This always happen when Ive been using the PC for around 1hr or more. If I close the explorer.exe application and run it again (the explorer.exe app) the problem goes away but after a while it backs. I already install the latest drivers for my graphic card, the refresh rate of the monitor its ok... Im running out of ideas and I been looking all day for a solution, you are my last chance
