My load times have always been pretty long using XP with my setup and is almost up to a minute or more from power on, but my load light was always working and doing something and I just got use to it. I just installed two small spot fans and as soon as I powered on my boot times have gone from a minute or so now to about 6 minutes. Windows will even load without icons, windows bar, or anything but sits there looking at my desk top background for about 3 minute or so and sits idle. Then after the 3 minutes of idle my load light starts working like crazy and everything comes on.

I've just noticed that after installing AVG Free 8.0 and ZoneAlarm Firewall that my computer's startup time has increased dramatically. Is there anything which you can advise to decrease this again? The startup time before installing these two programs was almost instant. Could it also be down to the low amount of disk space which I have available at the moment (15.5GB of 181GB free)?

Is there a way to make applications start with a higher then usual priority automatically? I routinely run video encoding in the background which will eat up both the cores on my Opty 170. As expected, this makes certain things sluggish to use. But, I wanna make it so the applications that I actively use (Firefox, MSN, and AIM) have an above normal priority.

I just checked my running processes and I have three of them that are higher than they should be. I've defragged, I've checked for spybots and to see if I have any virus and everything checks out all right. I'm worried that these are so high and I wonder if there is some sort of software or something I can do to bring them back to normal. Here are the three:ashServ.exe 4,372 KB csrss.exe 3,044 KB smss.exe 464 KB

With a lot of help I've been able to fix the Control Panel>Display problem I had earlier. But now I have another problem. I started a new thread because it is a different problem, and because it may be a Viewsonic monitor or ATI screen driver problem rather than a Windows-XP problem. When I have the screen resolution set to 1024*768 the desktop fits neatly into the monitor. When I tried it at 1280*720 the desktop fits neatly into the monitor, but the graphics and text look as though they are stretched vertically - ie too tall for their width. When I tried it at 1280*768 the proportions looked right, but the desktop seems to have been moved up and to the left. That is, there is about a 2cm black band to the right of the display, between the right edge of the monitor and the right edge of the display; and there is about a 1cm black band below the desktop. When I tried it at 1280*800, just for completeness, the whole desktop seems to overlap the limits of the monitor. That is, the icons on the left are half hidden 'behind' the monitor, and the task bar at the bottom is barely in sight at the bottom edge of the monitor.I don't remember having this problem in the past, but it's been quite a while.

I have a problem when i start up my computer, if i have my screen resolution at 800x600 and i start my computer it will make the resolution the maximum (1600x1200) and it will make a black boarder that is like a quarter of the screen all around. Can this be because of a virus that messed something up?

I've changed the screen resolution from 800+ to 10000+ range and back to 800 several times. This so that a program I am using will fit the screen (10000) and back so icons and print on desktop are bigger. Now I can no longer get dsplay to open and can't do anything with the display. I'm using Windows XP

I have (or, rather, had) an eMachines desktop running XP Home. I fried its motherboard but the HDD remained intact. I pulled it out and found another system running XP Pro (a Dell Precision desktop). However, simply swapping the HDDs to boot up from the eMachines' drive on the Dell did not work: it complained about hardware mismatch and I could not even start Windows in Safe mode. Is there any way to do this? What else do I need to do to get it to work?I am trying to avoid getting a new computer at this point, so getting the Dell to "be just like" my old eMachines would be ideal.

I've been having a re-occurring PC problem that is driving me nuts! I'd appreciate it if someone could look over the following "error messages" that I get on my PC, perhaps diagnose the problem, and hopefully suggest solutions that I could try.
For your reference: I use Windows XP Home Version - Service Patch 2 as my operating system. The PC is a Gateway 700XL that I purchased in February 2002: Intel Pentium IIII 2.2.GHz processor, Intel 850 chipset, & 400 Mhz front side bus. I keep my operating system updated as well as my Norton AntiVirus program. I have "intermediate" PC skills. Usually I help others, but not this time

I just did a fresh restore of Windows XP Media SP2 from manufacturers restore DVD, and downloaded all of the Hot Fixes and updates from Microsoft. Everything was fine for about a day, but now the system boots, I get to the black screen where it asks you if you want to start Normally or in Safe Mode, or last known configuration that worked. No mater what I choose, it just shuts off.
This is the reason I did the full system restore in the first place.I dont know if this is related, but when I hook up the hard drive to my laptop to scan for viruses and spyware (you never know), the hard drive keeps shutting on and off. But it doesnt do that when its hooked up to the tower in which it came from, so it might just be the device Im using

I am having problems booting my laptop, it is a HP Pavilion ze4111s laptop, installed with Windows XP Home edition. I have tried using all the system recovery disks that came with the laptop and tried rebooting from the cd-rom but nothing is working. It says eventually when it does something after test bios that HP EEPROM has been reinitialized and to resume or enter setup. when booting from cd-rom and pressing to resume, it says "wrong CD for this notebook".

Basically the original problem was a non functioning WinXP OS that led to using the system restore disc on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...dont-work.html
Now the system will only boot in safe mode. So far I've done the restore several times. Gone into msconfig, checked Hide Microsoft services and disabled the rest, unchecked load startup items and tried a Diagnostic Startup. Device Manager looks fine, but I tried disabling items without change. It looks like the Restore Disc is the right one for the system.
