System Keeps Shutting Down (restarting) After Booting?
Dec 29, 2007
I just did a fresh restore of Windows XP Media SP2 from manufacturers restore DVD, and downloaded all of the Hot Fixes and updates from Microsoft. Everything was fine for about a day, but now the system boots, I get to the black screen where it asks you if you want to start Normally or in Safe Mode, or last known configuration that worked. No mater what I choose, it just shuts off.
This is the reason I did the full system restore in the first place.I dont know if this is related, but when I hook up the hard drive to my laptop to scan for viruses and spyware (you never know), the hard drive keeps shutting on and off. But it doesnt do that when its hooked up to the tower in which it came from, so it might just be the device Im using

It's driving me batty! I'm running XP Pro on a Dell XPS, which is several wonderful years old. Every darn time I restart or shut down, I get a combination of the following windows requiring manual End Nows. I'm the human END NOW machine:
1. agent.exe
2. AUMMsgWndName
3. Office Watson
4. ctfmon.exe
5. explorer.exe (usually this has to be ended now a couple of times)
6. MCCWSA Window
7. CMI Server
8. Hidden Fax Window

I'm experiencing a great problem with Windows XP Professional. It keeps shutting down (sometimes, I activate the screensaver to prevent it), self-restarting or showing blue screen (the one that's suggesting me to deactivate caching and/or shadowing). Then, yesterday, I realized that it's also unable to burn discs or copy the big files from them (he activates that blue screen again).I tried to reinstall Nero and almost every driver, but it didn't work. I tried it with the older versions, too.

I am running windows XP Pro and work with multi media applications, during playback of these files or sometimes in windows media player (and at times for know reason at all) my system will just shut down - no warning at all. The applications are not particulary using up much memory in which case I have more than enough to support. Upon starting up again this is the error message that is showing up in the event viewer (Application)

My computer has been running fine for years but just this morning it has been shutting down for no reason. I'm running XP SP2. I started it up after it shut down, then it shut down again, only quicker. Tried to power on again but it powered off immediately, then it wouldn't power on at all. I gave the machine a rest for an hour then tried again. It worked for about two hours after that then it started shutting down again. I've run a few virus scans (in safe mode and in DOS) and nothing has come up.

Everytime I’m going online after a while my computer just restarts. The symptoms I noticed is that downloading of webpages becomes slower than usual before it restarts. Before it restarts a blue screen appears with some text in it but I couldn’t read it because it just flashes a split second. After my pc has restarted a box pops out saying –The system has recovered form a serious error. But it doesn’t state what kind of error it just ask if you want to send the info to Microsoft. I hope someone could help me here. What are the causes and what do I need to do? (by the way im connecting to the net thru a modem, dial –up)

At least I'm pretty sure there's a .exe conflict issue here.
My explorer.exe does not start up when I restart the computer, then when I run it through the task manager it starts up for about three seconds then the desktop items and everything disappear again. I also never receive an error message with the explorer.exe crash. No "sorry, but the explorer.exe must close ect ect."

I'm running a AMD Athlon X64 with 2 GB of memory and 2 HD with a total of 370 GB and WIN XP Pro as the OS. I experienced a problem with my system randomly shutting off and after methodically checking all components, I determined the problem was with the CPU fan. I completed all the repairs and tried to fire the system up only to find out I didn't remember what my newly changed system password was. I'd be interested in any other options available to find or restore my password other than rebuilding my hard drive. And yes, I will write it down somewhere next time.

my computer has given me this problem in the past- and it righted itself. Not this time. I have a SoundMax onboard soundcard on a Gateway desktop, and according to device manager, everything is working fine, but no sound could come from the speakers. So I decided, maybe it is a hardware thing- I happen to have another Creative sound card here, lets try it. It worked! Yay! Then I restart, and then it stoped working too!I have two sound cards, one onboard, one PCI, both appear to be in total working order according to XP, and neither emit any sound after I restart the machine so I am assuming this is a registry issue or something windows related.

I have a 3 year old Acer Laptop, Aspire 3000 (with only 20 gigs) and have replaced it. I ran out of memory in it, so I am attempting to set it back to its original setup using the System CD and the Recovery discs (3) of them.I did as instructed, and reset the system to boot from the CD ROM and it went through the process and got through disc 1, but after inserting disc two, it simply shuts down and tries to reboot, but can't of course because it hasn't finished the process.

I have a Windows XP computer. Suppose that after finishing using my word processor or viewing an internet page (or whatever) and closed all the screens that I had been using,I immediately shut down my computer by pushing the power button? The computer shuts down a lot faster pushing the power button than clicking Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off (and even then I have to wait about 30 or 40 seconds for the computer to shut down)

After I used Fix-it Utlilies the program erased essential system folders. So now when I do check disk it reboots, flashes a blue screen real fast (so fast I can't even read it) then restarts the computer, restarts check disk, restarts the computer, and on & on. It won't stop doing this till I interrupt check disk at the start by hitting any key but then I end up with a black screen with instructions which include safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally & last known configuration
I can't boot from an installation CD to do a "repair" since Windows was preinstalled in the drive so I have NO CD. Does system recovery work?, who knows, I'm a noob and have no idea how to use it. The only thing I've tried to fix it was 2 things : 1) use system restore which failed; 2) use run> sfc /scannow but this file checker is also broken and will barely start before it errors and stops. I don't know what else to do besides reformat

system is restarting automatically during the boot process. An error message is flashed briefly before it restarts: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. "If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:"Run a system diagnostic utility suppied by your hardware manufacturer. In particular run a memory check, and check for faulty or mismatched memory. .
Try changing video adapters"Disable or remove any newly installed hardware and drivers. Disable or remove any newly installed software. If you need to use safe mode to remove components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode."Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

So I was working with adobe photoshop and it absolutely refused to exit. I tried ctrl+alt+delete and after about twenty minutes it was still frozen on my screen. So I tried shutting the computer down normally, and it froze on the "Windows is shutting down" screen for like, the fiftieth time. So I had to force it off by holding down the power button. When I turned it back on to continue working, I got a message saying windows/system32/config (or something like that) was missing or corrupt. I pressed "r" since I don't know where my startup disk is and it restarted.
I have Norton GoBack, so I hit the space-bar to allow it to restore to about an hour earlier before I opened photoshop. This wasn't the first time this had happened. I've been getting the same message at every other start up for a couple weeks and this method worked fine every time. It seemed to be okay this time too but then it just RESTARTED for no apparent reason. When it got to the Norton GoBack screen I got a message saying the system had become unstable and needed to start over, and it suggested it was possibly because of a bug in an application or a hardware problem which is also possible.

I am running windows xp sp2 on my hp pavilion dv1331se laptop and have started to have some problems. First, I was running the windows disk defragmenter and it took a very very long time to complete. I try to defrag regularly and I know it is not an instantaneous process. But it seems to be unusually slow now and even when it says its completed, it also says there were files it could not defrag. I tried to run defrag in safe mode to see if that would improve the speed and defrag everything. But in safe mode, once it started defragging my entire system shut down. No warning, no nothing. Just all of a sudden a black screen and I had to physically turn the computer back on.

I have (or, rather, had) an eMachines desktop running XP Home. I fried its motherboard but the HDD remained intact. I pulled it out and found another system running XP Pro (a Dell Precision desktop). However, simply swapping the HDDs to boot up from the eMachines' drive on the Dell did not work: it complained about hardware mismatch and I could not even start Windows in Safe mode. Is there any way to do this? What else do I need to do to get it to work?I am trying to avoid getting a new computer at this point, so getting the Dell to "be just like" my old eMachines would be ideal.

the computer boots up and goes to the windows 2000 screen but then the next screen would be the desktop but instead it reboots and goes to the same spot the 2000 screen but never makes it to the desktop, this happens over and over. I tried to go into safe mode but does the same thing tried command prompt only so I could type in SCANREG but it just reboots again I can't get anywhere to do anything.
The last thing I tried was last known good configuration. I clicked on it and a page comes up with all the writing I hardly got a chance to read it when it reboot again. but under the first paragraph wher it says something about last know good configuration it has a space and the it says project 1 like I could have click on that if I would have been fast enough.
